On Good Friday 1998, the historic Belfast Agreement (also known as the Good Friday Agreement) was reached, bringing an end to the decades-long conflict known as the Troubles. Beginning in Northern Ireland and spreading to the British mainland, the years of inter-communal violence touched the lives of successive generations across Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland before being brought to an end through a painstaking peace process.
To mark the 25th anniversary, we present the Evening News bulletin from the day the agreement was reached. Presented by Dermot Murnaghan, the programme features speeches by US Special Envoy for Northern Ireland George Mitchell, Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, as well as reporting from ITN's Michael Brunson, John Irvine, and Robert Moore.

John Major was the only Tory Prime Minister that I actually ever liked as a Irish person I hope that I will get to meet John Major someday I want to thank him for helping to bring the Troubles to a end John Major and former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds were very good friends and John Major said at Albert Reynold's funeral that if he has Irish blood within him he said that he would be very honoured to have Irish blood

Lots of focus and praise for Blair & Clinton 🙄. Hardly any mention of Mo Mowlam.

the praise and thanks given to USA and Tony Blair doesnt sit well with me. You dont thank the referee for winning the world cup. The work done was by the people of this island, in particular those of ulster who were asked to forgive the extreme hurt experienced. The thankless work of cross community programs, the children that learned to play together in spite of their parents fears A couple of privilaged suits from far off places just swooped in at the end to take credit

I think you're wrong in all respects - the sporting analogy inept. Certainly, the role of women, cross-community groups, clergymen must never be forgotten - but I would not dismiss 3 years Senator Mitchell enduring insults, the extraordinary commitment Blair, Ahern...the critical interventions by Clinton...and no one ' just swooped in at the end to take credit'.

@@mjw12345 You say im wrong on all respects but the only substantive counter-argument is Senator Mitchell getting insulted... in the context of bombings/shootings/beatings this just rings hollow and further strengthens my point that any credit these people get is disconnected from reality. Further still i would add that Blair misuses the peace process to launder his reputation after commiting war crimes in Iraq.

@@ince55ant All this raises so many difficult questions for a lot of the famous: Churchill, trash him because he was another English butcher in Ireland, dispatched the Black and Tans there, fomented Ireland's Civil War, the Bengal Famine and much more. Bush, the war criminal, but millions alive because he gave global leadership on HIV and saved millions. I have not sorted this stuff out myself.

What about Sir John Major, main architect and author of Northern Ireland Peace Process? 15/12/2023 is the 30th Pearl anniversary of the Downing Street Declaration 15/12/1993. Why is it always about the damn Good Friday Agreement? Sir John Major is Northern Ireland Peace Process.

Because it was the Good Friday Agreement that ended the terror campaigns of the Provisional IRA and of loyalist groups. Major was dependent on Northern Ireland unionist MPs for support due to a rebellion by Tory backbenchers, thus creating an obstacle to permanent peace.

the reality is, such resolutions dont simply come about because of royal decree. Its the actual people involved that make thee change real. remember politicians are great oppertunists, and are always thinking electorally.

Unite Ireland and be done with it. If any one that wants to remain a British citizen. allow them the means of migrating to Britain if they truly wish that. Ireland until it is unified will never be at peace.
