During the end of the 2021 wheat harvest season some oldtimer friends came together to cut the final field of the year using their classic Claeys and Clayson combine harvesters. The M103 was the most popular model of combine in the Netherlands during the 60s. In total 27.510 machines were build by the Leon Claeys factory in Zedelgem, Belgium. This is the same factory as where New Holland Agriculture is producing combines, forage harvesters and balers today.
Today most of these machines are in the hands of collectors and some are restored, as the 2 examples seen in this video. The 2 machines in this video are owned by farmer/contractor Ko Brasser and collector Bo de Kam. The third machine is a somewhat rare M80 machine. This combine was offered by Clayson from 1961 and followed 5 years later by the upgraded M89. It was a smaller version of the M103 aimed at small farmers whereas the M103 was for the big farmers and contractors.
The model number M103 stands for the size of the sieves which are 103cm. It has a 100x60cm threshing drum (the same as Claeys' first model the MZ, which was the first SP combine harvester build in Europe). The grain tank has a capacity of 2.300L and it is powered by a Ford, Deutz or Perkins engine. Header sizes varied from 260 to 300, 350, 400 and 450 cm working width. Its maximum capacity was around 7T/hr.
Production of the M103 started in 1958 and ran until 1967 when it was replaced by the equally popular M135. In 1962 the name was changed from Claeys to Clayson, as it was more easily to write and speak worldwide and because it sounded a bit to similar to the German CLAAS for comfort. Its big rival in Europe. In 1964 the US Sperry Rand Corporation purchased Clayson and the name New Holland Clayson was introduced until the TF and TX line-up, when the Clayson name was finally dropped.

Cutting oats in Scotland on a cold October night in the Sixties with a 103, I used to climb up the back while the tank was emptying to warm myself up with the heat from the engine! Great solid, simple and reliable machine, but awful dust in your face sitting that low down if the wind was behind you!

What a superb video of three of the most successful machines of their time, built like battleships and with no unnecessary frills they were easy to service and maintain. You could take one from a barn after 50 years and without too much ado have it working as well as ever within a few days. The restoration of these three deserves applause.

Estupendas trilladoras!!

Brilliant to see the old machines working as they were meant to, my father cut with one for years before he bought a 1530, also great to see the drivers checking the ground for grain that went out of the riddles and looking into the straw walkers to see they weren't blocked with chaff, we still use a M103, here is a video of it I made back in 2008 kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5nSppmbh7uirsk

pound for pound these machines are worth more, you do not have to be a computer tech to fix, fuel wise these machine do not do as well per bushel harvested, but with this machine you do not have to get as high a bushel per acre to make it pay for itself either.

Today's harvesters have made progress in throughput from 80hp to over 600hp. The surface of the grain separation tables are more efficient and therefore less space is required per ton threshed, but they consume as much fuel! clayes 103 (1,5m2 the upper grid and3,7 in total) . 80hp 8L/h (with crusher 10L/h harvested 7T of wheat /h or 1L/T threshed an Axial 2388 (5,6m2 of grid 330hp 30L/h you harvest 2,5T or 1,2L/T , an Axial 543 hp consumes 50 l/h with 4m2 of grids, 60T/h or 0,83l/T

Interested in what country this took place? In the late 50’s and in the 60’s my father bought a new Massy Harris self propelled combine with an 8’or 10’ header very similar to the small combine in the video, previously we used a Massy Harris Clipper 50 pull type combine with a Wisconsin v4 gas engine, what year was this video filmed? Thank you for putting this on you tube very interesting brings back many memories.

What you see is the normal variety. Usually if you want to bale the straw then this is what you would sow so you get as many bales as possible. There exists ‘shortened’ wheat which they sow when they won’t bale the straw. It has been used in Belgium for many years too….
