Agroforestry: Swedish Forestgarden/ Food forest Sweet chestnut walnut etc in a forest-like ecosystem

The Forest Garden at farm Rydeholm appears like a towering island of soil health and biodiversity in a sea of monocultures: cereals, oilseed rape and sugar beets on the Scandinavian Söderslätt. The main tree crops here are sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), walnut (Juglans regia), hazelnut (Corylus), but also korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), almonds (Prunus dulcis), ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and araucaria (Araucaria araucana). Biodiversity, ecosystem services equivalent to wild, forest-like environments and regeneration have been set here as equal goals with the food production. The long-term vision is a replacement of the annual crops with tree crops; sweet chestnut and araucaria (which produces seeds) as replacements for cereals. Hazelnut and walnut as replacements for vegetable oil. The film is based on interviews with Anders Lindén, the sixth generation on the farm and one of the pioneers of the Swedish agroforestry movement. Why agroforestry? Food production have to take the increasing lack of natural resources - water, living soils and fossil energy, into account. Agroforestry systems have been shown to be of extreme benefit for improving the resilience in agricultural systems. Runningtime: 38 min.
Skogsträdgården på gården Rydeholm tornar upp sig som en oas av jordhälsa och mångfald, omgiven av en monokulturöken av spannmål, raps och sockerbetor på skånska Söderslätt. De huvudsakliga trädgrödorna är äkta kastanj (Castaneva sativa) valnöt (Juglans regia), hassel (Corylus), men också koreansk tall för pinjenöt (Pinus koraiensis), mandel (Prunus dulcis), ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) och araucaria (Araucaria araucana). Biologisk mångfald, ekosystemtjänster som är likvärdiga med vilda, skogsliknande miljöer och självregeneration har här ställts upp som jämbördiga målsättningar med livsmedelsproduktionen. Den långsiktiga visionen är att kunna ersätta de anuella grödorna med produktion från träd; äkta kastanj och araucaria (som producerar frön) som ersättning för spannmål. Hasselnöt och valnöt som ersättning för oljeväxter. Filmen bygger på intervjuer med Anders Lindén, sjätte generationen på gården och en av pionjärerna inom svensk Agroforestry. Varför agroforestry? Produktionen av mat behöver ta hänsyn till en växande brist på naturresurser - vatten, levande jordar och fossil energi, som blir alltmer påtaglig världen över. This is so beautifully and informatively produced that I had to subscribe. Ander's enthusiasm, reverence and pragmatic outlook are infectious. As a country lad too, I especially enjoyed his comment on feeling the need to get as far away from that lifestyle, only to later be drawn back into it. I'd love to visit his property soon!

This is such a beautiful documentary about agro foresting. It is not only the beautiful way it has been filmed and edited but especially the person and his spoken words that illustrate the vision behind the concept that took my breath and made me completely silent inside. Beautiful filming, editing and a lovely story of another food forest brother. Thank you. I would like to suggest you look deeply into syntropic agroforestry if you have not yet. It facilitates, enhances and fast tracks these succession processes tremendously especially in abused soils. It originates from brasil by the Swiss farmer Ernst goetsch but works well in all climates.
