Super useful, thanks dude! Timestamps for anyone who wants them (I'm a p bass guy so I didn't do the others haha) 1:32 , 1:42 - Fender P Pickup 3:12 , 3:25 - Aguilar P Pickup

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very well done without overplaying the instrument which helps in actually hearing the tone. Based on this demo I much prefer the original P pickup. The Aguilar is brighter, but the Fender has more warmth and character to my ears. To help other viewers make their own decision, the P pickup (not rolled off) is at 1:43 for the Fender and 3:25 for the Aguilar.

I'm all about running the p and j pickup together with 50% tone. That's what I use most of the time. I love that spongey sound the j pickup adds to the p bass tone

What a difference! That's why I put the PJ's by Aguilar into my Fender MIM Mustang Offset Bass! Funny and those were the Fender Custom Shop pickups originally too. BIG difference.I cannot believe the punch and clarity difference. Especially in the P Bass pickups!

_wow_ those pickups sound good. you know when something beats the original custom shop pickups by that much, they're good.

I have to agree with some of the others. I like the sound of the original configuration better, both the P and Jazz pickups. There’s a warmth and fullness with the originals that seems to be missing from the replacements.

I agree, the original pickups sounded better to me. That Original P pickup with the tone OFF, sounded amazing

I struggle with this, but, I just can't buy the PJ combo. I recently got an Elite P which seemed to be the ultimate, but eventually I took it back in exchange for an American 60s P. Now, I'm happy.

Cant complain about that. See if the new tone blends nicely when you play it with background music.

I like the original tone much better. Especially at 1:57. Cool guitar. Great comparison.

i have never in my life had a problem with 60 cycle hum being heard in a mix. now when you stop playing, yes. but while the band is playing 60 cycle hum is a zero issue if you ask me.

Jukebox agreed, but in certain situations it's a pain or to have to turn down in between songs or takes, or mute in the studio tracks if you're not playing during a certain part... Now I have the tone I like and no hum. Best.

Great review but please know that I personally play with neither the tone all the way up nor with it all the way down. So, just suggesting that you vary the tone control a bit for different tastes. You're a wonderful player!

That was a lot of hum. Is there shielding paint or foil in the cavities and on the back of the pickguard?

Fender pickups (i would also have a hard time deciding to change the original pickups on a CS instrument to be frank) are warmer than Aguilar ones; I personally liked the Aguilar P pickup's performance better than that of the bridge one when compared to Fender's ones, although I preferred the original Fender sound, which is a little darker but fuller. Of course the Fender's single coil has got hum whereas the Aguilar one not ... however, if it is used to bring more mids to the tone of the P pickup in a multi-instrumental conditions, I believe that the 60-cycles hum may not be audible ... in substance, I'd put back the original Fender pickups ...

I have the exact same set up with the exception - I tried a Volume Blend Tone set up and I'm not happy with the J pickup sound when soloed - thinking of going back to V/V/T - any thoughts.

I had the same issue went back to V/V/T. More control, full sweep of Volume of pots instead of half the blend pot .

PJ just doesn't do an authentic J sound, which seems to be a waste

Nice demo! I'm thinking of converting an old P-style bass to a PJ setup. Someone told me that adding a J pickup will make the P pickup sound different (not as good/strong) even when the J is turned all the way down. Do you know if that's true?
@JohnnieGrooves
@JohnnieGrooves 7 жыл бұрын
Whoever told you that didn't know what he was talking about, or maybe he did some DYI wiring without any knowledge over the subject and fucked up his electronics. I had my P converted into a PJ and while the J pickup is turned down it has NO EFFECT on the sound of the P pickup. The P pickup sounds EXACTLY like a P pickup!!!

@jeff kerestes would it make a Squier PJ bass sound good?
@jeffkerestes
@jeffkerestes 8 жыл бұрын
It would make a Squier pj sound just like this at least as far as the pickups are concerned... The wood, hardware, and craftmanship all play a pretty big factor on sound... Some of those squires play really well and these pickups are a solid improvement on any bass.
