I think the monkeys are kind of a mockery to Aguirre's pride. They are his loyal soldiers, his pawns in his great empire. When he picks one up and looks at it with bewilderment, it is his only moment of self-realization to his madness.

I think the monkeys represent Aguirre being so lost in his madness that the only company he can keep is animals. His mind has become so beast-like that the animals think he's one too

It's hard to get into this film but I do love the soundtrack and vibe of it. But Apocalypse Now is definitely a better film. Even from a technical aspect, that film is much more impressive in terms of cinematography, visuals, sound design etc. I appreciate this film a lot for it's experimentation and influence but I just didn't love it as much as I wanted to.

The only similarity this movie has with Apocalypse Now is floating down a river in the jungle

Both movies are also quite pessimistic...although that could be mostly incidental

It's not "A gear", it's pronounced "A gara", the a's in gara are pronounced like Americans pronounce "a".... There are plenty of YT vids with the correct pronunciation

There was a basketball player for the Pistons in the 1980s and 1990s and they pronounced his name Ah-GWire , in Basque Spain this name would be pronounced A-Gear-A. Mexicans would roll the r a little more
