I've never seen a better depiction of such a struggle....don't we all have memories that we just can't get away from???? He said in interviews that he purposely went into those memories to write this.....very brave. I think most of us just don't take enough time alone with ourselves for those sad/awful memories to come to the surface, and if they do, we go find something to do so we don't have to face them. As far as the pills....I think it could be either way -- he could have just been taking prescriptions for his pain AND for his mental health. As the mother of a child who has depression/anxiety, I can attest to the fact that those medications can make you feel like total crap, even though they get you through the day. And my son doesn't like taking them at all, so it could be all of that too, and not addiction. I hear people say "Look at Yoongi" doing all this and being happy and I just think to myself -- YEAH. He finally got his shoulder fixed, so much less to no chronic pain, and he's grown a LOT mentally and emotionally over the last few years, so...YEAH, he IS happier. YEAH, he IS having more fun. Belatedly he's ENJOYING things and it makes me sooooooo happy for him! This mv and song is absolutely stunning.

He has struggled from a very young age living with trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD and social anxiety disorder. In addition he had to take pain medication and anti-depressants whilst working very hard as an idol. I admire and respect this man so much and rejoice in knowing that he is healing.

And since that's the case, maybe the handful of pills doesn't just represent taking too much of one kind of pill (though he could have been addicted to painkillers and maybe some other meds as well); the handful could represent all the different pills he had to take on a daily basis to manage his physical and psychological conditions. He had to struggle with so many different problems at once, and we had no idea just how much of it was tied to the accident. No wonder he seems to much happier and more at peace since he had his surgery. I admire and respect him so much too. He's an inspiration to anyone struggling with mental health issues.

the black room is a trap of bad memories that Yoongi can't get out of. lives the tragedies of the past, as in Groundhog Day. the scar Suga inflicted on himself was the Suga who was stuck in the memory. and continues to hurt himself, not finding the strength in himself to learn from the past and free himself from the black room.

He already spoke about his depression that he had to treat with prescribed drugs, then before surgery on his shoulder, he had admitted to postponing more and more the surgery by taking more and more painkillers until it was no longer effective, and that's when he decided to do the surgery... On the contrary, he has always criticized those who take drugs without a valid reason.

Sometimes truth demands you to feel uncomfortable. I never expected for Yoongi to share all his pain in visuals, but this was the best decision he ever made. Because people can finally see the hardships he actually went through, as well as the other members too.

If you think about it, Haegum talked about breaking free if taboos, and then starts throwing "idol no-nos" down the trash compactor. Violence, bloody, graphic murder, smoking, talking about mental health struggles and other particularly deep and personal issues that idols are forbidden from sharing, because it shatters the whole flawless porcelain imaginary girl/boyfriend image they're supposed to sell. Damn, I really respect Yoongi, man.

I think scar is representing self-harm, it was mentioned partly in his song The Last from first mistape. And when you look at Yoongi with a scar in all those MVs, it seems like Suga constantly tries to kill that past part of himself.

Notice that the first time we see his scar in the video, he looks at the camera and sneers like the king in "Daechwita" sneers. That reminds me of what he says in interviews about adopting a strong, emotionally tough persona to hide his hurt - and it makes me rethink everything I thought I knew about the king in "Daechwita." That persona might have been constructed partly to clap back at haters, but I think it was mostly constructed to hide his inner torment.

Having never spoken to Suga myself, but I have seen that recently he has been more energetic and apparently happier. I would guess that since the operation he is no longer in deep physical pain, which is exhausting to live with especially with the effects of painkillers on top. He seems a different, more positive person. No longer the guy who wanted to lie down and be left alone. Maybe having had the physical pain removed he has been able to find the energy, or intention to address the emotional pain. Whatever it is, I sincerely wish him well, to be able to find the strength to deal with those handicaps.

your comment made me cry, you put it beautifully, it's exactly how I feel looking at him. Back in the days we made memes about his "laziness" and distant behaviour, but underneath all of that, from the point of view of someone who knows depression, those looked like signs that he wasn't ok. Now he's still himself, the calm, generally introverted and thoughtfull person he's always been, but he seems.. brighter. Like you can actually see the work he has done, his approach on life and himself is way more forgiving and welcoming. He is more present and open and it shows so much. I will forever be proud of him.

Please note the split-second image of a hand holding almonds at 3:33. This is a reference to ALMOND: A NOVEL about a guy who has trouble identifying and describing experienced emotions because of a neuropsychologic condition (alexithymia). The "almond" refers to the amygdala, an almond-shaped area of the brain. Yoongi was seen reading this book in a preview to IN THE SOOP. The book is on Namjoon's recommended list.

Yes people use differing methods including sleep, for coping with depression, PTSD, etc. I believe Yoongi created the persona AugustD and the self-inflicted scar as a way to cope with his past trauma, to put up a brave yet indifferent front as a defense mechanism in order to prevent himself from falling into a hole he would never climb out of. In this MV, we see that while he still has these traumatic memories, he no longer needs the AugustD persona to protect him as he has worked through the impact these events have held over his emotions and his life. We, as people who love Yoongi have a difficult time processing this MV because while we knew some things, we didn’t know everything and the visuals of someone you care about struggling are genuinely heartbreaking. Whether it is in the long time past or whether it is “just an MV”, it is still something we all needed to sit with for a bit and remind ourselves that Yoongi has endured and come out the other side healthy and finally happier than he’s ever been. If AugustD returns, it won’t be because Yoongi has gone through something again, it will be because he wants to speak on something relevant in a “no holds barred” manner that he feels needs more attention. Of course this is just my opinion.

I think the last scene of past Suga is just that if the Yoongi of then could see the Yoongi of now, he would do everything he could to help him to get him out of the dark place he would try to save him, try to spare himself. But ultimately he can’t because the past is past. The time for younger Yoongi to spare himself the pain of his own decisions is already gone.

My thoughts about the pills is they don't represent self harm but the entire basis of medication is to help you feel or get better. I've been there, but when that black pit is engulfing your entire life, one pill isn't going to "make it better", and thus you're doing everything possible to make it go away.
@Yoomin833 Жыл бұрын
Hi Landon, no, he wants to tell us what a slave he was to pain meds, because after the accident, he couldn't be without them, his shoulder was shattered every day and he was medicated so he could dance and do moves, when he makes the decision to have surgery is when it is no longer bearable and his shoulder was completely wrong, that is why you see the pills. It's not drug addiction.

He woke when Yoongi got into an accident. And then when all the shitty things started happening he carved his face up as a defense mechanism. He wants to go out and be free of the pain and trauma but he is stuck there, reliving all the horrible memories like his mom and dad and depression with the pills (antidepressants) and trying to end himself. His actual self tries to save him but the amygdala is already so imprisoned by memories and trauma that his real self just have to live with it. 😢😢😢

It just hit me. While many army say this MV is too hard to watch and I completely understand, I’m “glad” (for the lack of a better word) that Yoongi made this. So raw and so downright painful. For the first time since becoming an army, I’m having a difficult time in my life, going through some dark times and maybe some mild depression. I’m glad Yoongi shares his deepest darkest pain with us coz it is some consolation that someone gets it. He knows how bad it can get. Not just surface bad, but deep dark darkness. And he’s talented enough to convey the pain as bad as it is. It’s good to know that Yoongi experienced all of that and made it out on the other side so amazingly. It had to be a tough journey but he made it out. The song as painful and difficult to watch as it is, it’s such a gift. It’s such a brave gift and selfless thing to do. You know Yoongi didn’t use his pain for hits. He used it for making art that speaks to people. I can’t watch this MV too often but I appreciate his art so much! Watching this somehow makes me feel understood. I can resonate with the pain so much.

Suga's words from the film Road to D Day about Amigdala: I wanted to tell you how I got a scar over my eye from DAECHWITA and Haegeum. in a sense, we ourselves are responsible for our scars and wounds. from the first arrow of trouble you cannot dodge. but when the second arrow flies at you, you just stand there and wait for the blow. because you didn't learn the lessons the first time. Тhis means that when Suga immerses himself in the sad moments of the past again and again, it is tantamount to how he's doing the scar on his eye himself. in a figurative sense. therefore we are shown a repetition of the scene of the accident with the car and then the knife in the hands of Suga. so we have a trilogy. in DAECHWITA two Suga's with the scars fighting each other. In Haegeum, Suga tries to kill his alter ego. In Amigdala, on the contrary, he's tries to save himself. these are all the experiences that tormented Min Yoongi. inner struggle with oneself. attempts to destroy and kill oneself / attempts to save and healing oneself.

Quindi le cose peggioravano perché la sensazione di poter uscirne gli faceva capire di non voler stare più bloccato dentro quella stanza ma nonostante i suoi sforzi non riusciva ad andarsene.

BTS’ Suga goes on a journey through his past painful memories in the new video for “Amygdala,” taken from his new album under the Agust D moniker, D-DAY. The track, which is laced with rock riffs and hip-hop beats, finds the rapper recounting trauma he has experienced throughout his life, from a motorcycle accident he was in during his time as a trainee to his mother’s heart surgery. The visuals, which were directed by Lumpens, bring some of those events to searing life, with the video cutting between those recollections and a more recent version of Suga struggling to process them. The video opens with a content warning for content relating to suicide and self-harm.

YT put a warning on 'Amygdala' (recently) for a reason. Once it hit back then? Thousands of peeps who'd suffered through their own personal trauma (myself included - as a 56 yr old West Indian Army Mom who discovered BTS in '16 and was on the verge of ...S with two failed attempts(over yrs, since a teen ) and on my third in 2016.. They - literally - saved my life)....became triggered. Is why he specifically put the " I Don't Know Your Name". It was revealing/sharing his past trauma with Army, while acknowledging that WE are also maybe...fighting our past demons and simply trying to deal. Eg.There was a young lady (BTS reactioner) who'd been though a serious car accident back in college...nearly died.. She couldn't look at when Suga hit that car. Broke down like - seriously - lost it. Had to end her vid, midway. Saw so many similar reactions? Lost count of how many 'so-called trained therapists' covered this video (back then) and tried to reassure their followers in their comments. Suga never hid from his S attempt back then or his pill addiction/trauma/depression and like hundreds of thousands in Army - credit BTS as a group (and his role with them)......for saving his life. Hence why he maintains to this day - not word for word but "My future consists of performing with my six brothers well into our old age. Even if we sit on stools and sing/rap while our younger dancers do the moves - we once did. I'll be happy". As a new member, Love your channel - stay safe .Borahea 💜💜

So the amygdala is responsible for fear responses (fight/flight/freeze) and when somebody experiences trauma and potentially develops PTSD the amygdala is directly effected (it actually changes in physical structure) so it’s not just a case of psychological feelings but actually being physically changed forever. Back in the day crude doctors performed a type of lobotomy where they went in behind the eye and destroyed the amygdala as an attempt to stop PTSD related symptoms. Sadly It normally went wrong and more than half of people ended up basically catatonic. So I’m thinking yoongis use of the scar is a visual representation of his struggle to want to destroy his traumatic memories and subsequent fears 😢

I think that the scar in his face represents the beginning of his persona Agust D, the anger one, and he recognize now all that pain was self inflicted (He looks like all that pain, anger went off after the surgery, may be if he had communicate the company before, all that pain could last less time?) He talks in first, second, third choice... could they be: being part of BTS and leave his family; not talking about the accident and bear the pain; and finally, face all of this and put the past in the past?
