Only Sufjan Stevens can make an entire room of hip, urban New Jerseyans stand up to sing an old Lent hymn.

If you're listening to this great piece, wondering if there is a Jesus- He is real. He is complete, tender love and He wants to know you. Look for Him and you'll easily find Him.

Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended That we to judge thee have in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected O most afflicted For me, kind Jesus, was thine incarnation Thy mortal sorrow, and thy life's oblation Thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion For my salvation

We don't associate Live from Here with holy moments that elicit tears, but THAT was certainly one. Thank you.

As we can't sing in church at the moment (Covid restrictions) I was able to join in with this. 'I do adore Thee, and will ever pray Thee.' Thank you, Sweet Jesus!

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. This is to all denominations: If Mark 15:6-15, 25-26, 33-39 is your Scripture(s) of the Day, this is a good hymn to compliment it. This hymn is usually sung during the Season of Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday.

Beautiful rendition of such a wonderful hymn. It is also in the Lutheran Service Book and we sing it during lent almost yearly

Such a beautiful hymn - melody by Johann Cruger (1598 - 1662), used also by J.S. Bach in the St. Matthew Passion (Herzliebster Jesu, was hast du verbrochen )

Its interesting how a lot of the times songs from that era used the melody from different songs

@@trey5667 That’s completely true unfortunately. Some “Christians” are just horrible... ya gotta find a church that’s supportive and non judgemental. Not all are bad. Glad that you still have faith in God :)

@@robertdenzeliii8799 I, dear sir am not judging anyone. I happen to love Sufjan's music whether it be "Christian" or otherwise. Whether he be straight or homosexual. I was taught to hate myself by the church. I am no longer affiliated with ANY "Religion". They all breed hate/human tribalism. This is not what Jesus would have taught. So God if he is out there (I hope) will be just fine with me. Be well Robert.

Whose harmonisation is this?
@johncraven45396 жыл бұрын
The same harmonization is used in the 1940 Episcopal hymnal; no attribution for harmonization is given, implying that it is Cruger's own.
