Lawrence said this will add a $4000 tax per family .... now add up how much the government withheld and your family paid in taxes last yr. If you added a 25% tariff to all goods imported to the USA you would collect twice as much as you are required to pay in taxes, doing away with all federal income tax. This is how the government was funded before federal income taxes. Do the research .... this country had a surplus and no federal deb. Congress enacted an income tax in October 1913 as part of the Revenue Act of 1913, levying a 1% tax on net personal incomes above $3,000, with a 6% surtax on incomes above $500,000. By 1918, the top rate of the income tax was increased to 77% (on income over $1,000,000, equivalent of $16,717,815 in 2018 dollars). Federal taxes happened because we eliminated tariffs to help grow the economy of other country's. Sure goods will increase because of the tariffs, but if we are lucky people will cut back on wasteful spending and finish that last 3rd of that $10 cup of coffee and some will do without and find things to do that cost less and are good for you like gardening . Please don't be offended by my thoughts .... its a simple perspective from some one who been on both ends of the income and tax scale.

True but it would still cost much more. A lot of companies moved manufacturing over seas because materials and labour are so much cheaper. As a consumer you get the product cheaper. Therefore you are able to buy much more with the same paycheck. 2 ways to look at it.

Lawrence is correct on about 50% of what he said but you know its what people don't say is just as important. Lawrence said this will add a $4000 tax per family .... now add up how much the government withheld and your family paid in taxes last yr. If you added a 25% tariff to all goods imported to the USA you would collect twice as much as you are required to pay in taxes, doing away with all federal income tax. This is how the government was funded before federal income taxes. Do the research .... this country had a surplus and no federal deb. Congress enacted an income tax in October 1913 as part of the Revenue Act of 1913, levying a 1% tax on net personal incomes above $3,000, with a 6% surtax on incomes above $500,000. By 1918, the top rate of the income tax was increased to 77% (on income over $1,000,000, equivalent of $16,717,815 in 2018 dollars). Federal taxes happened because we eliminated tariffs to help grow the economy of other country's. Sure goods will increase because of the tariffs, but if we are lucky people will cut back on wasteful spending and finish that last 3rd of that $10 cup of coffee and some will do without and find things to do that cost less and are good for you like gardening . Please don't be offended by my thoughts .... its a simple perspective from some one who been on both ends of the income and tax scale.
