Ahupua'a is a traditional Hawaiian system of land division from ma uka (mountains) to ma kai (ocean). It represents much more than that, though. Ahupua'a is a way of life that represents sustainability and the harmonious nature of relationships.
There are three levels within an ahupua'a: ma uka (mountain), kula (plains), and ma kai (ocean). Each holds a unique ecosystem of plants and animals, as well as a community, that work together and depend upon one another as water flows from the mountaintop, through the plains, and into the ocean. This way, the fisherman can give to the farmer, and the farmer can give to the fisherman. When we do our part to mālama (care for) the land and each other, the land cares for us in return.
