For the detractors, imagine a world where AI soldiers are integrated in units with human troops. Programmed to follow the rules of engagement and abide by the Geneva convention to the letter. The amount of human rights abuses would plummet. No more emotional soldier getting away with a retaliatory attack on a prisoner of war. The bot will report immediately, as per protocol. All he's saying is instead of using human eyes and emotional eyes on target images, they are instead using AI to make measured calculated dissertations. Which then provide less than certain recommendations on if the image is of a hot target or not. The AI is not the decision maker, but still just a machine learning algorithm doing a yes/ no classification task. The same as saying is the image of a cat or not. Everyone scared of this making war more gruesome has never been to war.

So when an armed robot comes to your door and you choose not to answer, what are you doing when this cold, emotionless piece of equipment kicks down your door and makes its way into your place of residence?

Firstly I think it wise to state how cautious I have been in consideration of writing this comment for the Council on Foreign Relations and to provide a context in terms of non adversarial concern. There was mentioned several times about American values and I truly wondered both if American values are sinking gradually ( I honestly hope not) but that is honestly not what I intended to concentrate with regards. Although there are nations that have adopted both a hybrid situation of traditional national values and American exported values that are seen as a success for instance south Korea and perhaps Taiwan come to mind for this consideration. There are also many examples of where the American might has entered a conflict and prevailed in some determined action but once withdrawal has occurred in many countries especially within the area predominantly inhabited by Arabic speaking people or areas that are resistant to American or western value systems after withdrawal the status quo has often become less aligned ( speaking from point of perspective opinion and based on the influx of migrants or refugees to Europe) with the values of a typical American. So the question of how can American values create a lasting effect for global populations that may be ideologically separated? I think that how the American armed forces interactions are superseded after withdrawal is important. It is my belief that Artificial intelligence that is aligned with a progressive American value system can far outweigh an eastern originated or aligned model but access after withdrawal to such systems may be seen as risky. Leaving a country broken or less predictably governed would seem to by a concensus when looking at conflict withdrawals like Afghanistan where if they had had an ideological reinforcement of American values been possible after withdrawal perhaps opportunities for commerce or production in those countries may of been viable and aligned to America. Whilst Machiavellian ideals are encouraged by parts of Western culture there may be reason to argue for the opposite to be true. If implemented opportunities at a community level were coupled alongside withdrawals would an allegiance be far outweighing of any radical or rebellious group that desires to seep into the power void and could giving access to intelligence provide progressive insights long after America has left. I have commented because I believe that there is a ideological battle that would be lost if another hegemony or religious ideology were to strongly take hold and this I truly worry about but there must be something for the people in foreign lands to believe in and see possibilities and opportunities from. Perhaps access to really powerful models that are highly curated away from positions of violent extremes may be some where towards providing for people after conflict and in other less wealthy areas.

I dont think the issue has anything to do with americans making informed choices with AI assistance -- i think the larger issue will come down to fatigue, and trust of the AI. So the user might get used to the AI always being right so the user decides to just mentally check out for a moment and blindly trust the AI. My other concern is the goal of the AI. What if it starts manipulating the humans to ultimately reach its goal? I think you may have covered this and mentioned that you are watching the inputs and outputs during training. I have nothing else constructive to say. I think its neccessary that we evolve with AI as we go or we will certainly be left behind. Good luck :)
