The movie came out in '89 and CDs were blowing up in popularity. So, the belief that media would continue to get more compact and big laser discs would eventually become outdated was already pretty well established back then.

BTTF 2 came out in 89. Laserdiscs never really caught on outside of Asia and were long out of fashion by this time so that's not really a prediction of anything.
