The “skills shortage” is dubious. You’re excellent at isolating the truth of things, let me ask you this … corporations receive tax credits/deductions, low interest rates for years, tax cuts, government sponsored programs where they are basically paid in tax credits to a certain amount for hiring people etc… Would you remove the aforementioned perks if the businesses did not hire a certain number of candidates? I understand businesses finding the best candidates but at this point they are basically dismantling the labor force. If I just graduated from the Uni and don’t find a job in my major, my skills atrophy and eventually I have to take a minimum wage position, if things become dire enough. All that higher education money spent for nothing. The AI applicant tracking systems seem to be a leading cause of this and it’s effecting large numbers of people. I remember when the former Soviet Union collapsed, there were a large number of nuclear physicists and engineers who suddenly became unemployed. The politicians began to worry these highly trained individuals would leave for rogue states to find employment. If you can’t provide a future in your country for your people, there’s a good chance they’ll leave. Better fix the problem soon. As I’ve said before , your channel is excellent.

Thank you, appreciate your support. I’d love to think this is just another cycle and the people that were laid off will eventually move to the next wave in hiring. The problem is that we’re at peak automation and it’s only going up. Literally companies pride themselves with “no people involved” statements. I fear that we’re late stage capitalism and there’s less need for qualified people. There’s need for cheap workers to do basic jobs and it’s not looking good for grads. If I’d be in college right now I don’t know if I’d be interested in uni. What would you do?

@ I fear we think too much alike. Globalization for all of its ills created many jobs, now we are deglobalizing and just beginning to feel its effects. I don’t want to sound too crazy but I want to become less dependent on the “system”. Our ancestors survived in a brutal world in the past. Because of them having to deal with nature on a daily basis, they developed problem solving skills to cope with their environment. I’m not sure how people would fare if things began falling apart today. I was a programmer for 18 years then was replaced by a younger gentleman. I’d like to leave the world I was part of and return to that natural world, BTW, I’m not so sure young people shouldn’t just skip the Uni and do the same. It would be hard but I think we all would be better off in the long run, being less reliant on government/corporations. Maybe we could reform the communities we’ve seemed to have lost and begin rebuilding social ties, where you’re literally reliant on others for your very survival. That would help rebuild trust among your brothers and sisters, something we’ve seemed to have lost. I really have a hard time dealing with the world that we’ve created. I like that old saying, “God gave you everything you need, you don’t need anything else …”. It Just means, go back to the natural world, you’ll be a lot happier. Best of luck with the channel.

It's an interesting time to live in now, for certain. There's an argument to be made for the enrichment aspect that AI provides, but a real lack of the skills and growth that is more meaningfully gained through trial and experience. Until both companies and applicants re-learn to recognize that latent potential for growth should be prioritized over short-term requirements fulfillment, there will continue to be an increase in noise. It'll also be interesting to see when the AI hype starts to die down and investors figure out that AI won't be bringing in the lucrative returns promised by cutting headcount and salaries. Great video, real insight as always.

Great take, my concern is that soon people won’t be able to think without help from a language model. To your point, the skills that we’ll value in the future will be adaptability and others that can’t be taught. The problem with those is that they cannot be recognised by an AI so recruitment will need to get more personal and less quantitative. I like this AI hype as it made me realise what’s truly important

man I'm looking for an ML job and there are so many AI recruiting software's out there now. People want to use LLMs even more for recruiting. Guess the hope is it will be better than ATS Even chatting to someone for a freelance gig right now and they have the same thing and want help with their prompts. This will definitely not get worse, right?

It will get worse before it gets better. Until they actually NEED to hire people, they'll just keep playing games with AI tools and wasting people's time. It's the worst time to be actively looking for a job.
