Just finished the game an hour ago. Great story and characters but most importantly those are embedded in a storytelling concept/experience unique to and only possible with video games. With strictly linear story based games I just rather read a book or watch a movie. Really great!

Your enthusiasm sold me on this, haha. I've been looking for something like Ace Attorney, Danganronpa, 999 etc. to play in my down time and this seems like it scratches the same itch. Thanks for the review, surprisingly there aren't too many of them on here. PS. You might like 428: Shibuya Scramble; it doesn't really have any puzzle elements, but it's a cool detective mystery VN. Death Come True is another interesting one from the creator of Danganronpa, but I haven't played it yet.

A cool mystery game, kinda like a movie, where skipping cutscenes is counterproductive is 'Secret Files: Tunguska'. Quite ancient (2006), but very fun to play, and the puzzles are a decent challenge. It's an adventure game, where you pick objects, sometimes combine them in the inventory (just two, not like Minecraft, haha), give objects to NPCs and most of all try to unravel the mystery. Give it a shot! It even has a sequel, but I've enjoyed the first one better

Yup, I do love me a great mature visual novel. If you love this, you’ll love the Zero Escape series as well. I do enjoy the hidden nods to the game you see in some scenes of the game like the billboard showing Zero from 999. I do enjoy that this is a mature visual novel but it still has some emotional moments in this game as well. I just wish there were more visual novels like this and Zero escape series 😢

I've played 999 from the Zero Escape series and really enjoyed it! I'm looking to play the rest of the series soon! I feel like you would enjoy Your Turn to Die if you haven't played it already- it's a free visual novel that combines similar elements from 999, Ace Attorney, and Danganronpa!

I wouldn't call the animation good. It does get better in the sequel but it feels like a compromise with budget and time that they lean into spectacularly. Just got done playing Omori and the sequel to this game and I'd say both of those are a bit better than this. I do love this game dearly though I would call it 8/10. Thanks for the review. Always nice to see people enjoy games with a good mix of comedy and tragedy( Unlike Fable)

It was created by the same person who made 999 and the gameplay is very similar but it is not a part of the 999 series! If you enjoyed 999 you will probably enjoy AI: The Somnium Files though :)

Best game? Nah. I'd say it's a good game, but far from flawless. - Mysteries? Pretty great. - Gameplay? Loved Somnium, hate how there are some gold lines hidden behind searching every little thing where most of it is pointless (not that hard to just gray out those stuff), action scenes are just FTEs which I find to be... meh (the comedy usually made up for it for me). - Logic? Mostly good. Flaws include stormtrooper aim, extra chatty villains, comedically distractable enemies, etc. A big one for me was Mizuki's superhuman strength (why? Like, it's not necessary, just have her learn fighting from Date; not hard to rewrite the scenes involving her. It's so odd to have sci-fi stuff mixed with this 1 superhuman girl for no reason whatsoever). - Comedy? Loved it! Some of it was hit or miss, and many of them certainly missed, but a good chunk of 'em hit me like a truck. - Atmosphere? Good. Sad when it needs to be, happy when it can be, funny when it wants to be, and just overall a fitting feeling. Action scenes are made funny over serious, but it's fine (I'm not the biggest fan, but they did do a good job at the comedy, so I'll give it a pass). I would've preferred if Pewter granted Aiba a feature that lets her control what Date sees/hears an injection or something which she includes in her simulations of dangerous moments cuz that fixes most of the issues (aside from Mizuki's power). All they'd need to do is have Aiba mention it at the end. Other than that, it did pretty well. Logic in Somniums are understood to follow dream logic, meaning it can be about as meaningless as it wants, but they included the "you can't dream of something you've never seen before" idea which I like since that gives better meaning to the events in Somium (tho they were pretty uncreative with "unknown figures" in different people's Somniums).
