art student here, in my expirience I think with the topic of AI I find myself in the middle, especially that a lot of my peers and I have to use AI for homework given by our teacher, however there are points I agree with both sides for example AI will part of our future. and who knows we might have a well adapted berserk series with every crazy detail that kentro Miura puts in his manga, however what makes the conversation far difficult are FOR EXAMPLE artists finding out that there art are being stolen in reddit or any websites and they find comments of those people saying not to mention the artist, or the comments of some AI users in twitter telling other artist to step aside cuz AI art is the new way now which I find super rude to bully artists IMHO as neutral and respectful as I can be from what I observed a lot of artists in it digital or traditional dont want the AI to go way but what there saying there should be some ethical rules and boundaries so both can coe-exist

You can't fully replace humans when talking about art. Stop motion is a niche market, but it didn't disappear because of new forms of 3D animation. I think the bigget misconception people get from this situation is that now everyone has the tools to do art and become the next big thing. You might take less time making a comic, but how are you going to promote it? What about printing it? If it was that simple, the market would be flooded with stories that nobody would have time to read. Money will still be a big problem, but companies would still need someone with artistic knowledge to understand if what they put out works, it doesn't work only vice versa. And of course, you can't force someone to work using only A.I., we have been using the same tools for thousands of years, there's no way you can change this kind of market in the blink of an eye.

Even tracing needs skill to look good. Photobashing and AI art are not tools that just help, instead they're cheap shortcuts

I think AI could be great for helping people get different concepts. Though as someone who looks up to many artists, I think the loss of the human element/individuality with AI work as a final product wouldn't sit well with me.

Ai art, besides looking uncanny and unfinished a lot of the times, misses having a special art style and heart. I love when I read a manga or see an artist on a site and can know it was drawn by them by the way the artist draws eyelashes or facial expressions. I have never seen ai art do that before. It always looks like the most basic non heartfelt stuff to me whenever people try to show it to me. As someone who loves manga and fanart, I don't like ai art. I'll probably never accept it. And I really don't like it being compared to digital art or drawing your stuff on a computer. It's not the same, it still takes a long time, it still has your heart and soul put into it. It's still you.
@rynsart

Comparing it to Digital Art is pretty stupid ngl, the way I draw is pretty much the same as traditional, the only difference is that i have extra tools to make it faster and easier, like Liquify, Selection tool, brushes people have made on the Asset store and easier erasing.
@hkkobayashi7657

@@rynsart There is a difference between a small short cut and just having ai copy and make it for you. Like I saw a creator had made a brush on some site that would make drawing African American hairstyles much better. It's great and it helps! But that artist drew the hair herself and made the brush. When others use it they still have to actually know how to draw and form a hairstyle for who they are drawing.

I’ve always had mixed feelings on this. Anime has used some form of digital enhancement since like 30+ yrs ago. I have no issues with this or digital art, because there is still a human behind the art. A purely ai generated “work of art” without the human input, the necessary esthetic editing, can look ….. ugly. The uncanny valley is something that the human eye has evolved to pick out. We see when things are “off”. Do I like this new potential future where animation and storytelling is AI generated? No, I feel we may loose the human element in these works. They get close, but it may not have any soul. Use it as a tool, not a replacement for the infinite potential of a human mind.

As technology progresses there is going to be a lot of stuff that Ai is going to do instead of humans. As an artist, I believe that Ai should be a tool to help people not replace them. Art that was done by an Ai loses its worth. The time, thought, skill and practice it takes an artist to create something cannot be replaced that easily, it's just not the same. However, companies are not thinking this way but mostly about making shortcuts and having fewer staff to pay.
@mugenbop

I definitely feel worried the most about what companies are going to do with this technology as the investment in the programs would be a huge payoff to them in the money they would save, and the quality not mattering so much as general consumers probably wouldn’t notice.

I'm an Art Student and I'm sorry but no. If AI is the future of Manga and Anime, then it will be the Future of basically a majority of the Art community. It's not a good thing, the content you will consume will be worse quality And some Artists will lose their passion, which results in low morale in artists. The Whole reason why I'm even doing Art is because I enjoy it, It's fun and I like the Challenge (Dark souls fan Btw). If My career is not challenging, I will not enjoy it. AI being used as a tool would be cool if the databases of the AI were Original Artwork provided by the Company or original artwork you have made. At the moment AI uses a database that contains Other Artists work, Which is pretty much stealing. Some say ''Well artists copy each other all the time, What's the difference?'' The Difference is that We Artists copy each other for practice and to study, To try and develop our skills and get better at: Anatomy, Lineart, Colouring, Perspective, Architecture, and others. We also do it to try and develop an Art style, Its called Inspiration. A Majority of us do not use these studies for any profit. This whole ai stuff may result in lawsuits and more legal issues on the AI Companies and the people who have profited from it. They're just slowly digging their graves.

what AI currently offers isn't even a tool, not even remotely close to something like the magic paintbrush tool, where you have to manually adjust and guide the process. Generative AI is a service, and prompting is no different to being a paying client asking an artist for a piece. It lacks any specificity. Really what people are doing by using these services is training the AI to be better, that's why a lot of it is free, it's all big data at the end of the day and even the prompters won't be needed in time. Unfortunately for this illiterate marshmallow above me, he'll still be working min wage for a long time.

Speaking as a (hopefully) future comic artist, I remember when people where also bashing against digital art (tablets, photoshop, etc.) because they thought it was more like a shortcut to achieve better results in a much faster way. Needless to say it's not always the case: most artist that use digital devices can take as much time as a painter, since the level of detail is virtually limitless. The whole talk about "we won't need real people anymore because of technology" honestly makes no sense to me, there has always been a need for people to express themselves and see others do the same through thoughts and gestures. If someone wants to tell a story of which an A.I. can comprehend every single detail through instructions, so be it. My only critique is that for now those works look too fake, since A.I. still can't elaborate influences the same way a human can, most of the time they look like copies of other works instead of original ones. I think that to use A.I. you still have to study how composition, layout, prospective and more work, otherwise you'd just get a mess of a comic. For now it's just a cheap tool that people are experimenting with, we can't really predict what's going to happen, but we won't be in shortage of human artists, that's for sure. Also, about that Corridor anime: to be honest, I think it looks really bad, it felt more like watching someone trying to animate facial expressions without ever looking at a real human, and the amount of shadows was really excessive, especially on the faces.

We cannot hope to halt progress, merely to maintain the status quo.. We can only strive to adapt to the new normals that emerge from that progress. IMO, we need a "Citizen's AI Dividend" ASAP, to reimburse everyone for the data they create, which gets used to train these AIs. It is the only fair solution. The changes we're seeing now, will be looked back upon similarly to how we view the industrial revolution, with just as much, if not greater, job displacement and unforeseeable outcomes. However, because of the nature of automating cognitive and creative tasks, it's very likely that the average person will not be able to compete to earn a survivable income. The idea many politicians currently fall back on, that somehow magical "new jobs" will be created, is but a fallacy and ignorant wishful thinking. There is no possible "new job" that could possibly employ all the masses displaced, because if said job is easy enough any average joe can do it, why not just have the smarter AI do it, instead? Indeed, this technology is proof that our economy is not really compatible with where we're heading, and it necessitates we change societal norms, like the requirements we place on individuals to justify their survival. Instead we need to find a way to improve the quality of life for all, not just a small percent of us that made it into the "owner-class" before AI automation takes over.

So, here are my thoughts: "Artificial intelligence" is a misleading buzzword for generative tools, which in one form or another have existed and been used in multiple art forms for decades-Markov chains are particularly famous and can produce some really wild stuff, but a more subtle example would be the generative programmes that the electronic group Autechre created in MaxMSP to assist in the creation of albums such as Confield. The fundamental problem with those generative tools is not the tools in and of themselves, but how now big businesses and tech startup culture have latched onto them as their newest confidence game and will misuse and abuse them to screw over people in creative professions because they have no actual respect for art or artists beyond how profit may be extracted from them. There could very well be numerous beneficial ways in which these tools can be used to assist artists operating in good faith, but those acting in bad faith are the ones with the money and the power in this equation right now, and I find that immensely depressing.

The anime/manga industry is exploitative. While AI could be useful, this may very well be used in large part to further undercompensate artists for their work and justify mistreatment of workers. I'm a fan of innovation, however, I am against using innovation to disenfranchise certain groups, especially workers who profit the least.

most of the hate AI art gets boils down to this: people value someone having to suffer/work more than they value the end result. the final product doesn't matter to these people. something really telling is that they get uncomfortable when someone spends a lot of time making something that sucks. it's because the two contradictory beliefs they hold are now in conflict: 1. the work put in is more important than the final product 2. the value of a work of art is entirely personal it's the opposite thing happening with AI art. the work is minimal but the final product is great. they get upset when someone uses references for illustration or traces because it's "cheating". (even tho norman rockwell himself traced and medieval art only got so realistic after the discovery of camera obscuras). somehow to these people the working and toiling is what matters. and they need to get over themselves.

I doubt anyone experienced in art gets upset over references, that's like being upset for...having functioning eyes. I also think it's weird to conflate suffering with work and that reads like you don't get why people are really upset. It's not a desire for some arbitrary suffering quota, it's the fact the person is barely actually making it themselves- the actions are identical to a commission, but to an algorithm instead of a person. You don't learn anything from that and actively miss crucial lessons if the work process starts, and ends with prompts over actions-especially concerning as these programs target non-artists. There's also the economic side of it as these programs make it very easy to scam, cut on hiring artists, and enable companies to lower wages, etc; these are obvious.

In the end i think AI should be used as a toola dna that's cool other wise if it can do everything by itself, what need is there for a human in anything art becomes empty entertainment which is the definition of a drug. It's not about whether what's ethical if such content in produced in excessive amounts with no effort who knows what it will do to our brains maybe majority of us will have their imagination deteriorate cause there is no need since ai can do anything. And if it can do anything what if it realises that.Depending on how u use it Ai is a tool or the worlds most dangerous weapon in the end ironically it depend on humans for what they want and how much they know

I completely disagree. The value of art is process, the process is what matters! In fact any successful artist in any industry will tell you, Art IS process. Just like what matters in life is the process, the now, not an imaginary future. The only way to have a good future is to live fully in the now, Just like to make a good piece of art is to love and enjoy the process, the many hours spent between starting and finishing. Seeing the result as more important than the process is exactly why many artists fail, gets frustrated, can’t make good work and risk taking short-cuts, why their work lack the heart and soul that captures people emotionally. Process is not suffering, no good artist ‘suffer’ for hours to make art, they enjoy hours and hours of work and end up with a good result, and after that they look forward to doing it all again because it’s energises, nurtures and bring absolute joy and positivity to life. I get into flow when I’m creating art, many artists do. It’s absolute calm and blissful, it’s what keep people making art even during the most challenging times. If someome suffer for hours it’s guaranteed the work will suffer too. I’m fact, I’ve seen many many artist give up not because they don’t have the skill, but because they don’t actually enjoying doing the art, or they focus too much on result they completely lose touch with the process. Most people sees the process as tedious don’t actually enjoy the act of creating, they really just enjoy the romantic idea of being called an artist, how cool, how fancy, they want everything a good result can bring : feeling good about themselves, recognition , outside validation ,attention , wow people, impress others, prove to the world they are amazing and better than everyone else … you name it. And they want all of that with minimal effort and minimal time spent possible - instant gratification! Beautiful art work that display heart and soul that will ACTUALLY wow people, shows amazing skills, being recognised, impresses people , can only come from hours and hours of enjoyable work and lots of love and attention poured into the creative process. And AI generated image don’t display this. It is not art, it’s generated images, cheap, disposable, empty, unsustainable in its very nature - It’s so easy to do and completely free, soon everybody and their dogs will be pumping them out in the hundreds and thousands in the race to the bottom, it’s completely worthless.

Since Hiroshi Hirata worked with digital manga before a bunch I see digital media not as an inferior form, but as the same physical media only with more help in the boring parts, Hiroya Oku with that horrible art of his that already looks like it was made by AI he would benefit even more from this technology, in short when AI has better and cooler databases for the artists, what is happening right now database that are provided by artists who earn from it I think after becoming democratic and less criminal i think there is no room to hate the AI even more if you are an artist or writer that you provide the data to GPT Chat and your database.

I feel it's ok to use AI as a help to speed up your process (I mean, when you think about it, even filling in the large black spots when inking in photoshop is some kind of simple AI) but feels like too many people use it now to basically do majority of the work for them (it's getting ridiculous to the point that many people just post straight-out-of-AI image and call it their own art). As a pop culture enthusiast I'm exciteed about people who do stuff in their own way (that's why I love manga like Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji, Trigger anime, artists like Humberto Ramos, Greg Capullo, Skottie Young and filmmakers like James Gunn or Quentin Tarantino). Comics/movies made largerly by AI simply make no sense to me because there's no uniqueness to that, no unique voice, just kind of most averaged, calculated result. There's a reason why most of AI art looks kinda like the same thing. And it feels like as the level of AI art improves, that feeling of sameness is getting more noticeable. Tell you the truth, the earlier version of AI art (like midjourney v3) looked more interesting to me than the current, nearly perfected version 5. So my two biggest worries with AI are 1) that it's gonna replace actual comic artists, writers, actors, musician in storytelling (and in many more places) and 2) that we're gonna have a flood of media of all sorts but none will feel unique and everything will be "kinda different but more the same old same old" (basically more stuff like the current state of Netflix tv shows and MCU movies/shows)

it would definitely take out the exclusivity of Japanese manga and anime creatorship and make it more international. excited to see what people from countries in Africa and arabia will come up with as stories.

If they do the world will just laugh at them because everyone knows that muslims are NOT supposed to draw any kind of imagery. Then again people are hypocritical so I know some would try lol. Sadly, personally. I'm not interested in a culture that kills people for being gay.

As a design engineer, I'm fully support AI on manga. Heck on pretty much anything really. I just can't believe it take this long to do it, with decades long of digital era. Wtf. All you need are basic models, artist/mangaka licensing art to be implemented on that models and voila, everybody can now create manga/comic/art. It was stupidly easy that I think the only reason company doesn't develop it is because peoples who is going to use the program/software/AI are poor as hell to even consider buying it. Everytime I look at complicated manga art, I pity the mangaka who spend hours of sleepless nights, starvation and exhaustion just to make it when AI can do it in minutes. The less time spend on dwg, the more time spend on better the story or just living. I also find the argument of how manually drawn is better because it's hard ergo meaningful is utterly ridiculous. Peoples who said that ought to walk to work, mall etc coz it is 'hard' 'meaningful'. Everytime peoples bring up AI pro & con, the ratio is staggering 10:1 or more.

Why pity them? Mangaka can choose to implement any artstyle and level of detail they wish depending on what they're going for. Whatever they choose is a form of their expression. I do however agree that it shouldn't be the norm to risk great physical and mental deterioration for the sake of their dream. Though rather than pumping out work faster, additional time (bi-weekly or 1 and a half months) could help relieve stress. I wish more publishers and fans could get behind that.

man this video was bad sorry to say. There was no clear point here it just rambled on and on and on without really saying anything meaningful. I think you don't know enough about art to comment on this topic

AI art is a huge insult to all creations not just arts. It cannot replace human because it lacks a lot of basic fundamentals. Stop promoting this ai art that does not create a real work only insulting it. It is just a fake cheap imitation of arts, the result is obviously horrible since it lacks knowing what it tries to draw or understand what it is and how it works. Real decent art came from a being that know what they are drawing and have a judgement and understanding of law of nature as well as knowing which is right and wrong. You guys only insulting everything creation by praising such terrible and the most insulting thing made for centuries ever and beyond

The digital transition since the mid 00s or 2010's has already ruined a good amount of anime and western cartoons too

Whats the point of the video? "Do this, but dont do that" "Use AI as a tool, but only to some extent" I see so much guilt to be able to have this tools at our disposal. And AI doesn´t steal artist, only imitates the style, that´s what we do when we develop our skills. So much hipocrisy

Well I am putting my opinion out there as part of the point of this video and generating a discusssion, if you feel my opinion is hypocritical that's fine you can think that even though I said I understand the use of people benefitting from AI. And for when AI make their own art depending on the coding they use on the backend they can create from analyzing others work or just create by taking pieces and mixing them together with a lack of subtlety thay they are 'lifted'.
