Ranbir was serious when he corrected them and said "Hindi Film Industry". People don't like the word "Bollywood" because it was obviously copied from the word "Hollywood" and now film industry people feel that Indian movies have come so far and became so successful and have their own identity and "Bollywood" makes it sound like some cheap knock off of Hollywood ,hence they don't like the word Bollywood. Nothing to do with the fact that bombay changed to mumbai.

The reason big artists don't want it to be called Bollywood is because the term comes up in relation to Hollywood. So Hollywood is a place, it's on a map. There's no place called Bollywood. The name just caught on as it was simple and well, us Indians always trying to see ourselves from the lens of the West. It's not derogatory or offensive, it's just inaccurate and makes the Hindi film industry sound like an after effect of Hollywood. Priyanka Chopra talked about it when she came on Stephen Colbert's show Jaby.

Okaaayyyy did not realise this comment thread would become so ridiculous so fast. Anyone denying that 'Bollywood' was picked from Hollywood, and that 'it has always been Bollywood' is delusional at best. Regarding the movies being made in the Hindi film industry, you'd really have to be living under a rock to not see the fantastic cinema we have been producing for the past 4-5 years. Maybe the reason you only talk about the so called 'Star Films' is because maybe you're the problem and can't seek out the good stuff and make it profitable. Having said that, I don't think the flamboyant and maybe unrealistic kind of cinema that we have producing is something to be looked down upon. Remember, India is still a severely poor and uneducated country, where people see cinema as a means of escape. Not everyone seeks intellectual satisfaction from movies or movies which 'open your eyes'. You seek that only when your basic + needs are fulfilled and you're financially very stable. If you're dealing with hardships on a daily basis, seeing a Salman Khan kicking down doors is your means of joy and escape. Try seeing a movie with your house-helps who come from villages. See if they like deep, thoughtful movies or movies with unrealistic flamboyance. Multiple types of cinema can and should coexist. It's upto us to make them profitable so they're made.

Ranbir just had a cameo in Love Per Square Foot, India's first Netflix movie (I think). So I guess he changed his stance too! Jaby I think he wasn't being sarcastic with Bollywood. There are two aspects to this. One because originally it's hindi movie industry (you can see this mentioned by Priyanka Chopra in one of her interviews in America). Two because there are other movie industries in India(as you know) which get sidelined because of the fact that you call it Bollywood and everyone outside India calls it as the only Indian movie industry. Atleast this is my aspect.

Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and its official and local language is Marathi. That's why the Marathi and Gujarati Name Mumbai is more commonly used because majority of people in Mumbai are Marathis and Gujaratis. So people call it Mumbai while speaking Marathi, Gujarati and Hindi but Bombay while speaking english

That's true about outside actors, especially people of colour going over from the UK but specifically because there's a lot of issues of lack of representation in general in the UK so they are going because it's a struggle for them here. Case in point Riz Ahmed who's British Pakistani I believe he's in HBO's the night of, he did a great talk about this in houses of parliament, about the issue of representation of diversity. It's a great talk to react to Jaby check it out!
