As much as I appreciate Jaby's point about being vigilant and not going to obviously dangerous places, I think not enough men realise that there is no safe place for a woman (sometimes not even her own home). And it's really exhausting to always be wary and never be able to let your guard down. The only way to fix the problem is to teach both boys and girls from a very young age about consent, and I really, really hope the next generation of women will feel a little bit safer (if we do our job right). Edit: Sorry, I should have scrolled down to see the comments. Everyone has already said this like 1 million times. 😄 But I still want to leave this comment on here.

@Jaby koay According to me i.e. this is my opinion/understanding, (for benefit of other commentors to this video), a patriarchal upbringing which tells the male child he is more important than the female, is primarily to blame for rapes. If the children are made to understand that both genders/sexes have equal rights, none is inferior to the other, and both deserve equal respect, incidents of rape will come down on their own. Like you mentioned you saw in 1 other video.

This is the first time I'm commenting on anything but one thing I would like u to consider is that south side or the bronx are just certain areas. For women or girls we are mostly surrounded by men in any situation and to constantly be vigilant is to always live in fear and at the end of the day is that how women should be forced to live. Imagine if every area in la was the south side and u were a preppy white guy. And a lot of time rape happens in the confines of your home by your husband. Or by ppl u know..... and after all the precautions women can still get raped despite what they wear

Even I had the same opinion as you jaby but on thinking a bit more I found that when women say that the men must be educated to behave properly they are 100% correct. I say that because rape or molestation is a case of taking advantage of a situation where a man feels he can easily get away with that crime because either the women will be to ashamed to share that with someone or that she is not powerful enough.(and vice versa for political correctness) . I agree some one can be murdered if he or she goes in harm's way ignoring the danger, but the fact remains that molestation, groping etc. can happen in a shopping mall(school, home and many places- this is horrific and very true) , in broad daylight and there are chances that the victim will keep that info. to herself. there is one more thing, A food for thought actually; if you talk to girls regarding how they should protect themselves from any kind of sexual harassment their response will definitely be why can't you educate men (every single one of the girls) . if all of them are saying the same thing there should be something which us men fail to notice. Even Sonam Kapoor had such an incident when she was a child. According to me the remedy to this problem is self defense, and at the same time sharing such a thing with atleast the people who care for them ,BUT the root cause is proper education of men.

well Priya, to that I would say, everything has a range of validity.What u said is true, if u are outnumbered it's a tough situation. But such an act is an act of crime (can happen to anyone) and those criminals will be happy to commit any other crime also, in such case s your only hope is your presence of mind. But in other cases when the offender is not a hardcore criminal but a normal guy with some bad intentions then a few strong words can also serve the purpose. So the real solution is women empowerment but the CATCH is no body else can do it for you , you guys have to start feeling powerful and act like that.

An individuals attitude is shaped in so many ways. It's not just down to parenting. There are so many outdated beliefs ie male and female inequality. How various religious groups view women's roles in society. Even pop culture plays a part in how women are portrayed. How many times have we seen women scantily clothed, dancing in overly sexual ways in music videos surrounding a male artist? Women are not taken seriously in the music industry. Are we really in the 21st century? Technology has advanced but as human beings we have a long way to go before GENDER EQUALITY becomes a reality to all.

Let me tell you, i 100% agree with you there, but let me ask you sth. What if there is no living at all, and only signs all around. In your example, it was very specific... It's not that specific here. There are too many signs, normal tasks in day to day lives become difficult to perform, like simple things as getting milk and bread from the market. Eyes staring down at you! Why do you think this was included in this video, because it actually is a huge problem if your daily life cannot function. you might be right, "precaution is better than cure", but that is something which is not meant for public platform and when you say that "girls also should be careful" you are surely concerned about girls but that also gives pshycological hint that it's duty of women to be safe, but it's actually duty of whole society to make women safe, and specially being at the position, from where you can influence people's mind and thought you should never give moral support to rapists

Since the day a girl enters puberty (sometimes even before that), she is told not to out at night, refrain from wearing certain clothes, and not appear too friendly. If we keep policing girls/women instead of changing how boys are brought up, things will never change.

Well Jaby to the point you mentioned, the sad part is us as girls in India we try to be as cautious as we can while walking out. But we still get raped, the girl you mentioned was "walking in a main big city, on busy road with a guy friend" and yet she got raped. Her case had shaked the country, we couldn't believe such monters could exist in this world. There are cases of men raping their daughters, a relative raping a 5 months old baby. So, me as a 21yr old woman I know no matter where I go or how vigilant I am, somewhere inside I know can be raped just because I am a woman. You know what's funny even after such heinous crimes it's always us who are told to be careful, I'm told to be aware of my surroundings but the men are never told to treat us as humans. Why is it that we have reached a point where we have to ask men to treat us equals? Why is it that we put every man who respects women on a pedestal? Isn't it something they should be anyways because guess what? We are humans to. Me having a vagina doesn't make me a lesser of a human being or weak. I think we have reached a point where if 15yrs down the line some of us wouldn't even want to have children. Why? Because I don't want my child to be raped, the same way my parents don't want me to get raped. So teach your boys and if they don't understand slap them, but for the love of God stop blaming us for even existing.

This kind of has to be said, no matter how blunt it comes off: It's not victim shaming, but a girl needs to become independent. I mean when we are ready to fight for our rights of equal pay and stuff, we also need to become physically strong enough to use our own hands and legs rather than keeping a pepper spray or something. Learning Taekwondo or Karate or something of that sort is really very much needed. Recently I heard the story of an 18-year-old Indian girl who beat up 3 men because they tried assaulting her and her younger sister. She is a student of Taekwondo. We can only yell at men to an extent saying don't rape me. And they'll even listen to you. What about men who are not educated? Men, who are laborers? Who's gonna teach them? So there are a lot of issues underlining here. And WOMEN: You cannot live in fear all the time. You cannot say it's past 8 p.m. so I won't go out to get some medicines for my dying family member just because of the illusion that I might be raped. Seriously?!

Uma venugopal you expect a 3month ,a 5 yrs and an 80yrs old ,a drunk person a drugged person to use martial arts to become “independent “ and help themselves with the help of martial arts ,what a big load of bull . Learning how to defend oneself is not incorrect but it’s not sufficient nor is it a solution to a problems so deep rooted in our society(patriarchy). What would help though is to cautiously raise our children to respect and treat each an every individual equally. PS its not humanly possible to fight off 15people at same time especially those who are physically more powerful than you. PPS By the way men get raped too.

I agree that every girl has to take self defence and stop looking up to law and parents to protect them because however strict the laws are they have not been able to stop rape in India. You can't change the patriarchal mindset in the coming years and nobody will come to your rescue rest assured of that .So the girls have to be strong and grow into independent women who will be physically capable of defending themselves.
