We had frequent power outages in the Philippines when I was a kid. The pitch blackness would freak me out. This is what gave me comfort and the sound and smell of it was so relieving to me. Totally just popped in my head randomly and found it here. As soon as that flame died and that brightness just grew it was so awesome. I’d fall right asleep lol I also use to sleep with the lights on.

Just restored mine (exact same model built in Germany vs the West Germany ones) to working order after sitting in a box a year after I picked it up at an antique store. Took about 10 hours, lots of polishing the grungy chrome, a petrolmax parts kit, and tinkering for the right settings using a PDF guide. Now it's perfect and I'm going to use it on the regular in the garage. 400 watts of light, 8 hour burn time, 1 quart of kerosene. I love this thing!

The tank stays cool, but the top portion of the lantern gets very hot. A very nice, efficient lantern. I've actually used it for light and heat in the garage during winter months.

Just be sure to check for leaks, valves turned to the 'closed' position, and plenty of pre-heating (better too much than too little). Light and enjoy. You may find a lot of useful info at classicpressurelamps

This lantern was not fitted with an alcohol preheater. I suppose one could be installed quite easily, but the blowtorch preheater is just too much fun.

I doubt it. The pump has a leather piston seal that would leak before dangerous pressures could be reached.

They did it in the old days but nowadays the manufacturers don't recommend it. Could be that it's a safety hazard or that the modern ventilation is not as good as in the old days. But I use it sometimes Indoors and it works fine. Just be careful. Cheers

You can purchase a "petromax" type lantern on ebay. I've bought a few and they work well and so far they have all held pressure perfectly. Just remember to take apart the plunger and oil the leather gasket a good bit.

Never use the knob as a dimmer! its just on or off, otherwise you will lean the mixture too much and some parts can melt.
