AIES 2441 "Monks Gate" Variations, arr. Bruce Broughton
This hymn setting assumes a light martial attitude, a quality found in the tune. Pay close attention to dynamic markings. The piece begins as a quartet, one on a part; the entire ensemble enters on the return of the tune at Rehearsal 20. Note that at measure 28, the third part is in octaves.
Rehearsal 35 begins a little “development” section of some of the tune’s motives. This is also the first time that percussion enters. At measure 47, the opening motive is heard again as the tune restarts in bar 49. The tune is interrupted at bar 58 to prepare for a powerful ending. The resumption of the melody at bar 61 should lead steadily through the short coda to the “stately” end.
