This video is really helpful. These days people are thinking about Chokes, Leglocks and Armlocks. But they forgot Wristlocks as integral technique in Jiu-Jitsu.

Sir you have a fan! your techniques are awesome and so is your assistant. I am glad to see someone actually bring Japanese Ju jitsu back in to BJJ with the detail that is only possibly with someone who has a deep understanding!

Well done! Happy to be able to add another video to my playlist “standing locks for bjj” . Started out in classical Jujutsu, moved over to Bjj a decade ago. Making the classical wrist and arm locks of the older systems work in Bjj has been an interest of mine from white to black belt. I Have some systems been able to adapt and modify. The grip and “twist bow” you are using for nikkyo off the lapel grab- that looks solid. I resorted to a similar grip for the technique “collar grab w a twisted grip(opponent’s palm facing them)” where you use a Kote gaeshi into a trip…I started using almost the same grip you are using but an Rnc grip across their wrist so they cannot remove their wrist or change the angle. That’s one of the challenges making standing locks work in live rounds. The rule for locking a Joint is :Control the Joint above the joint you are attacking(at a bare minimum 1 above;ideally 2+the head or hips. So when we can’t control those as easily in standing position because there is more potential for dynamic chaotic movement , we have to develop ways of gripping that completely isolate the joint we are attacking+off balancing to case the same rules to be followed for long enough to attack the joint. Thanks for contributing to my work! If you make more videos on standing locks for bjj I will watch them 🤙🏼

Thanks! Yeah I also enjoy taking old jujutsu techniques and figuring out how to apply them in modern training. I could do more videos with standing locks…just need to find time 🤙🏼

Neat video - although i'm skeptical of the first technique being effective. I see one major problem: The set up is elaborate. Many stars must align to apply pressure to the wrist in this fashion. Especially when it comes to keeping them attached to you, it seems like it would be pretty easy to just let go as soon as there's a threat and the lock is on. But maybe i'm wrong? Do you have any footage of this being pulled off in live rolls? I'd love to see it done at combat speed. Although it seems far fetched, I see it's usefulness as proof of concept for some of the other stuff you demonstrated. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. You are talking about the wrist grab from the beginning of the video? Yes that is a valid technique, but can be better applied in a more controlled position, like guard, since standing techniques have a lot of looseness.

@@Aiki_and_Jiu thank you for yours. yes, I’m talking about the standing technique. I see how it can work better in more controlled positions. Do you have any film of the standing technique being pulled off live? I’ll try it in randori over the next few months and see if I can get it to work.

@@purchell53 I don’t have much video of live rolls (probably should start filming), but I’ve definitely used this technique many times, especially no gi. When the opponent really tries to control your wrist, it’s not difficult to change the angle. Submitting isn’t always the case, but creating a reaction and distraction are almost guaranteed.

Subscribed. Good teaching skill. Would you have a wrist lock to counter a strong collar tie?
@Aiki_and_Jiu
@Aiki_and_Jiu 9 ай бұрын
Thanks. It would be difficult to gain wrist control from a collar tie without compromising your posture and balance. With that said, kote gaeshi would be very feasible if you rested your hand on their arm while in a collar tie. As they retreat the arm or reposition, that would be the opportunity.

@@Aiki_and_Jiu Thank you! Martial artists are usually so parochial, especially Aikido people, so it's always great to see this kind of cross-pollination. It would be great to have a BJJ for the Aiki arts video series too!
