I been called a karate man in the past however I began Aikido at 13yrs old and one of my most enjoyed arts holding rank in several different sets I still remember my Aikido instructor San Combs give me excellent advice, when facing a boxer karate or kung Fu fighter run! I suggest that would be the best possible way to defend your thesis in Aikido.

the training was an orgy of compliance, when Herman an untrained person tried to roll with Tohei, it wasn't so smooth and Tohei had a tough time with him at first. It turned into Sumo for a while, then he went more Judo jujutsu on him and started throwing him.
@airon3348

An orgy? Haha! Of course they cooperate, after all, they are in Tokyo. At the Aikikai Hombu, a diluted "withe collar" form of Aikido was practiced back then (and continues to be practiced to this day, sadly). An Aikido that is *not* O Sensei's Aikido, but the product of the ideas of these two characters that appear in the film: Koetsu (Kisshomaru) Ueshiba and Tohei Koichi, masters and lords of the Aikikai at the time. One of the reasons why O Sensei moved to Iwama was precisely to develop *his* Aikido, an Aikido that had nothing to do with the "bureaucratic" mentality prevalent in Tokyo. Even the visits of O Sensei became annoying in Hombu in years to come, since much of the time in class was spent in scolding those who are now called "Shihan" for their poor technical performance and zero martial attitude. In short, in Iwama: O Sensei Aikido, in Hombu: Koetsu Ueshiba's Aikido.

Aikido is a movement based art. Anytime you have to slow it down this much for safety and allow the “attacker” to close the distance like this you have lost the ability to use momentum. So this video when Herman is involved shows non-resistance mostly. And in each case the larger man is unbalanced. The commenters below who are trying to argue this is somehow evidence that Aikido doesn’t work against a resisting attacker miss the point entirely. To resisist means that he Aikido practitioner is doing somethign to them. But Aikido works off of committed attacks. Shaping the attacker. Not doing some thing to them. All the comments from the Bjj fan mob about cooperative training are so ignorant. The training in BJJ is also cooperative. The strikes in class are not real strikes for example.

If Tohei had used atemi the westerner would be out in seconds. They were trying to promote the harmonious side, not how quick to concuss a westerner with one strike to the temple. It was a no win for Tohei, but being an aikidoka his ego was not taking precedence. Was so simple to restrain the guy when he dedided ready to.

Although Tohei sensei won against the judoka, Tohei had to struggle and finally he had to use a Judo technique to win! Aikido is not effective against Judo or any resisting attacker.

Actually, all of Uyeshiba's original students were well versed in Judo and Karate. The legendary Kimura himself had a huge amount of admiration for Morihei Uyeshiba and often trained there with Gozo Shioda and Abbe Sensei. Kimura was a black belt in Aikido as well. Eventually in the later decades, Aikido became a watered down version of itself... hence, the lower general standard.

foxybrown2 Aikido jujitsu and judo all share a common ancestor In Takada and Aiki bujits Samurai fighting arts Aikido is a spiritual pursuit Incorporating martial concepts and principles of movement to blend with an Opponent armed usually with a sword These principles can be Used to create the throws and evasion you see as long as the Uke comes in as if he has a sword . It is large circle concept Judo is more competition Related ,it’s base is In the grappling arts of aiki bujits It’s founder Kano was also A student of Takada’s It uses more leverage based Concept and technics Jujitsu could be said to be the grappling arts of aiki Bujits Designed to subdue and or kill A single opponent when unarmed it includes all the concepts of both judo and Aikido . Large circle,small circle and leverage and of course much more Aikido is not a fighting art Even though it’s concepts and Principals of movement do have great merit in the arsenal of martial arts laws and concepts it cannot be taught as a fighting art by its self And was never meant To be.

@@peedinkus389 Actually i'm not a novice what i said is true it has been proven time and time again that a wrestler or BJJ will take down a Aikido person 95% of the time. Even Aikido people are starting to admit that they waisted there time doing Aikido if it was for self defense. Now i like Aikido and i think that is improves your awareness and reaction time but the bottom line is if you do not train for real life situations no martial art is going to work in that situation. I train right now in Tai Jitsu wich similar to Aiki Jijitsu which is the original Aikido before Morihei Ueshiba watered it down to more a spiritual thing.

15:40 ..."These exercises prepare us mentally and loosen our muscle... blah, blah, blah"...What nonsense. They are actually Shinto rituals as Ueshiba was a Shinto priest and was using Aikido as a vehicle for promotion of his religious and spiritual beliefs. It's questionable if he ever wanted it to be a real fighting art. 19:28 ...Like Systema and all of the co-operative arts, when faced with a non-cooperative opponent, abandon your delusional training and go back to your previously learned Judo skills.

@@ursamajor5107 You probably didn't understand the book and the words of O sensei. Doesn' t matter if Aikido is a common style of fight or not. Aikido works perfectly in a real situation and O sensei was a genius able to do what Aikido is. Aikido is a genuine martial art and way to find the peace.

@@ursamajor5107 Well... I started my martial way with five years old. I was national champion with 15, 16 years old, in Judo. I did Taekwondo, Muay Thai, Capoeira ( I am Brazilian), in BJJ was champion of my state, and after 23 years of Aikido, I have absolute sure about my words. Listen, I was living and playing Judo in USA, they asked me to represent USA in the Olympic Games. In that time, I was the best in my country and you need to understand Brazil is very strong in Judo and Jiu-jitsu. This is because after the war, japanese immigrated to Brazil and taught martial arts to brazilians. So I studed the secrets of Aikido with a genuine master, a 90 years old japanese man who trained with the son of the Founder of Aikido. I really know what I am talking about. Aikido has amazing footwork, It is 100% killer in a real situation. Oss.

@@iatsd I dont think that dates ar much important. But they did lie on more important things. Kissumaru said his father didnt learn long from Sokaku what is a total joke. He learned 20 years from him and gained teaching license . Aikido is mostly Daito Ryu just with a bit more flow. There are many things up to the point that modern Aikido is rather the Aikido of Kissumaru than that of Morihei.
