Aimee Mann is one of my favorite songwriters. How dare anyone have treated her poorly. The woman is a gem!!

no, that's not redemption. that fucked artists over who don't have big deals paying their bills. digital sales are a joke in terms of royalty points paid to artists and napster killed albums as a money making unit. now bands either have to have a multi-million dollar deal to put a record out without touring, smaller bands have to tour three to four years to recoup money on an album. it made the time in between creating art longer. those things all HURT music fans and artists

And she left them to inevitably flush themselves down the toilet, to go off and probably "market" deadly defective dross and has brought great music to us! Thank you Aimee!

you dont need no stinkin record company trying to slave you, you are an artist and you have a following, put yourself on the web and soar girl. Give them that look with those Ice blue eyes of yours.

Only corporations hold the keys to the castle. Now, with "free music" on the net and CD burning, there's almost no record business. Has anyone seen music get better? I haven't.

I've seen lots of good music in the underground scene like psych garage sounds coming from Greece and Sweden lately. What is rubbish is Lady Gaga, Beyonce', Eilish, etc.

Thank you Aimee for not doing what the Shirts and Ties think will sell records and concentrating on making what you know to be good music. In the 37 years that I have been playing Rock and Roll I never had a record deal but I have had problems with people I work with wanting me to play music I didnt feel was good music or wanting to do things that had nothing to do with music because others was making millipns or even billions doing it but I stayed true to what I knew to be good music I love your music Aimee because it comes from your heart not because its the trend or because sew n sew does it too Keep up the good work .....Carl

Um....she went "independent" in 1999 by starting her own label and sold over 200,000 copies of Bachelor #2 (and those sales figures are YEARS old.....not sure what the number is now). She's since released 4 more albums on her own label. "Go real".....she's always been real. At the time this interview took place, she was on Imago, which WAS an independent label distributed by BMG.

That's something I never understood, is that a label can drop you because your albums don't sell... when it's THEIR job and what they get paid 80+% of the album's royalties for, TO SELL IT. So they drop the ball and it's your fault?

@@esltogo6898 Your post should be pinned for all to refer to when these types of articles come up. It is informative and insightful and helps to bring some balance to the discussion. As far as this documentary goes, I would have liked to hear the record company’s point of view. There’s usually two or more sides to a story. Without hearing them it’s difficult to make an informed opinion.

What she's talking about is the rule not the exception . the rule is the singers and bands get the crumbs from the fat cat record company execs, management, lawyers and all sorts of middlemen, who take most of the artists' hard worked for, earnings . Badfinger's demise was the rule and still is

As anti Semitic as this sounds get Jews out of the music business unless they’re onstage. They ruin everything for the sake of their god “money”.

Back in the ‘60’s, they were hand in hand with organized crime - and at least one aspiring artist ( Bobby Fuller ) was murdered when he didn’t produce enough income. Of course, they were also involved in other shady industries - like the garment industry.

I know your comment is six years old but this video was recorded in 1993, by the time you commented Aimee had created one of the most successful indie labels (SuperEgo Records) that she started in 2000. her album sales are nearly triple what they were when she was on Epic, Imago and DGC. she needs no one but herself. she's made that very clear. she is the business model to follow
