Not only his influence on guitar world! I listen to classical music because of Jason and follow this deep underground classical music channel @PianoFJAudioSheet that posts rare and less known classical works and their playthroughs on 100 year old videos and piano rolls. I ran into not 1 but 2 metal heads on that channel who also got into classical music because of Jason when they were young. One of them is an Italian concert pianist and covered Altitudes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5uuipefgJiJhqM also Jason's 'Air' incredible orchestral cover is by Russian classical composer Konstantin Kokourov, who got into classical music because of Jason. So as you see, his influence spans beyond guitar.

@@DaveDexterMusic yeah, PG is by far one of my favorites guitarists ever. Like him because his stuff is hard, his technique and speed are reachable and doesnt push it to the limit as Jason and Shawn had. Very respectable guitar player and teacher. I've found out recentely that Jason and Shawn are not the fastest anymore. This new generation has brought so many guitarists, with much more technique and speed than the past one. But the ones who rn has surpassed the limits by now are Roy Marchbank (33nps) and Tiago Della Vega (50nps). I've studied and calculated it. Can you imagine what an iconic collaboration it would’ve been to have an album completely composed, arranged, & played by Jason Becker & Cliff Burton? Both men were gifted somehow with next level technical prowess (the compulsion to grind through hour after hour for years), ingenuity/unique & distinctive styles, & shared affinity for/appreciation of classical music... that would’ve made for a mind-blowing record, imo. I hear the possibilities in my head sometimes when I’m pondering the non-'hair-metal' metal from the 80s.

This guy was without a doubt a genius at what he did before ALS stole his guitar playing abilities. I understand why some people make comments regarding his wiping the floor with EVH, however, music is not just about being able to shred like a beast, it's also about writing great songs that touch people and make them want to get up and bop around. EVH was an amazing talent with a gift not only to come up with a type of playing that influenced a generation of guitar players ( including Jason Becker ), but come up with great songs. Shredding is nothing without great songs. Songs that EVH wrote will be listened to and remembered forever. Having said all that, I agree that Jason Becker had an amazing gift as well.

That's fair but Jason is a genius at what he has done AFTER the ALS diagnosis as well. Check his 'Perspective' (1996) and 'Triumphant Hearts' (2018) albums he composed while paralyzed and on ventilator. They are varied and full of masterpieces spanning many genres. It's easy to focus on the shred but Jason has inspired composers that never even touched a guitar... like m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKWXinuiiMeooZI this can't be said about other guitar players. Jason is for sure THAT one shredder for who technicality vs musicality argument falls out of the window as he could go toe to toe with literally anyone from either camp even AS A TEENAGER.

Jason Becker insists that EVH is the undisputed greatest guitarist in world history and he's right . Eddie is soooooooooo much more than a shredder he's got the entire package . Nobody to this day comes anywhere remotely close to Edwards rhythm mastery , he was beyond astonishing .

I am so glad that KZbin didn't exist when I was a young guitarplayer during the late 80s. Certainly I would have been inspired by the immense talent, but I guess having it displayed in my face would have killed the joy and confidence I felt, despite all my limitations. Somehow hearing amazing talent on record were primarily inspiring, because those guys played in a league of their own. But this gets so close and intimate I cannot but confess how much talent I lacked - and then I am not even considering the technical discrepancy. That which grows needs some protection from reality before it can stand on its own two feet and walk properly. Anyone else that thinks that KZbin can have a detrimental effect on young people, pace that it is also obviously inspiring?

I think the opposite. My guitar teacher was an amazing Classical/Flamenco player. He manhandled and shredded nylon strings, 3 feet away from me every Saturday morning. Then I would be absolutely inspired to go home and play the entire day and evening, Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 4 hours on weekdays. That is the ultimate inspiration! Remember that Jason's dad is a classical guitarist, and his uncle a jazz guitarist. Jason was immersed in inspiration directly from actual humans. I think it helped him.

Jason is an inspiration. If there was ever an example of "life ain't fair" it's him. But the man, despite his illness, managed to keep going and keep writing. I hope to own one of his Carvin tribute guitars one day. He also makes a great point, it's not all about playing fast. Playing slow and making it count is the hard part. His mastery of the guitar was truly something to behold.
