she had me at the "boom SPLAT!" with the boot stomp -- also the stereotypical witch voice when she said "I'm the WITCH" was just cherry on top

This is so good. The idea to set the show in a library is truly inspired. The end of the song was surprising and effective.

My favorite thing is that they made the end of the song actually make sense. Instead of just randomly disappearing and mangling the last line of the song, they actually follow the script and give reason to her death. Somehow more climactic with the breathless, "crunch," that just shrieking without meaning, Well done all.

Actually, if you look at the James Lapine musical book of Into the Woods, it quotes: “And, despairing that she had ever wished to be a part of this world and its rules, she called out to her Mother in the ether, beseeching her to deliver her from these people, even if it meant punishment with the deformities she had had before. With that, the ground beneath broke open and she sank into it and disappeared, never to be seen again.” So the explanation is that the Witch throws away the beans so her Mother can get her far away from the rest of the characters using the curse, even if it meant she was punished with age and ugliness the way she was in Act 1 of the show, hence the lyrics: “Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch”. And with her death? You can see in the passage above that she was dragged beneath the ground by her Mother, which explains why she sinks into the stage, therefore killing her, THEREFORE her Mother “delivering her from these people”. Because you can’t just guess all of the information above, some productions have her eat the beans (like this one), which, of course, has a much more obvious ending. But, with enough background knowledge, the way the Witch sinks into the ground in a puff of smoke in the other versions makes sense. Hopefully this informed you enough! Edit: And one more thing. This death doesn’t make any sense because if she had eaten the beans, the beanstalk would have grown inside her and there would have been a new beanstalk. So yeah…

I really dont want to compare and Im fully aware of my bias for Meryl Streep, but I think I liked Meryl singing it more. This womans voice is amazing dont get me wrong, its just missing a kind of... support? that meryl has. But its interesting to see where the song originated. 10/10
