I thought zanac was going to be a bad guy with greed but he ended up being a good man. The kingdom fell not because of his actions but his family outright betraying the kingdom in everyway.

“A learned man and a lover of his country” this can best describe Zanac

His a gap moe too. You expected him to be bad but he has a good reason to everything he has to do to save the Kingdom. But his men betrayed him to save themselves. Disloyalty like that is one of Ainz greatest fears.

Yeah, one of the reasons he acts the way he does is because he’s afraid his own guardians will turn on him at any moment if he doesn’t play the part that they want.

My theory is that Maruyama believes that much of the plot doesn't work if Ainz manages to make and retain an actual friend that can draw out what's left of his humanity. I assume it's why characters like Zanac, Calca, and Gazef inevitably end up getting sucked in and ripped apart by Nazarick's machinations.

Since the beginning, it's been a central part of the plot that Ainz is undead. Ainz always prioritizes Nazarick, making every choice for the benefit of the Great Tomb. Nfirea boosts Nazarick's power, Gazef doesn't want to join Nazarick, and Zanac, unfortunately, stands in the way of the residents' happiness as Re-Estize needs to fall. That's what makes Overlord so special-it's one of the rare stories where the overpowered main character is not a goody two-shoes hero, but a true villain, not just an anti-hero.

I can definitely relate to momonga. Loneliness can make you cold and calculating. It can make you callous and much more prone to find disgust in humanity from your own point of view. If you are a lonely man with political power and a mighty army with unmatched weapons all those factors can be a very lethal combination. Sad but true.

Dude went out like a boss. Didn't matter that he had basically zero combat experience, he threw down that gauntlet against those mercenaries and fought to his dying breath. Love how when we first met him he seemed like such a slime ball, but by the end we find we totally misjudged the guy.

A great man, who loved his kingdom and the people, brought down by his own family and the nobility. What made him such a great character ultimately was what ended his life. I really wish he could have gone the same route as Renner.

Poor Zanac.

I think Zanac was a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand in the beginning he seemed pretty greedy and really just wanted powerful allies and the crown for himself, not thinking really hard times were ahead, but when shit truly hit the fan he proved that he was capable and that he would do anything for his country.

I think his early depiction stems from him knowing that he is in a very weak position, and knowing that fundamentally he is not "intelligent" especially put beside his sister. He needed powerful allies because the alternative would be to suffer in a completely disloyal political system.

Zanac should have ran to the empire and bend the knee to the emperor

It is thought that Zanac was actually successful in his talk with Ainz though due to seeing how they treated Zanac he reversed his opinion and continued the "War" (I say it like that as it wasn't a "War" much more a one sided slaughter).

The archetypical tragedy is not the story of a foolish man ruined by foolishness, it is the story of a wise man with a few flaws destined for ruin.

I don't think it was not worth it, but I always wonder why he did not try to develop his own land within the kingdom that could break away from the kingdom.

Great guy but you should also give credit to those that stayed loyal and died with him there were a few

I feel his actions where worth it for one reason, they were for the people then for any political faction.
