Air Brake Relay - How it Works. Air braking systems and Commercial vehicles

Relays are fitted to an air braking system for larger vehicles to speed up the application and release of the brakes, minimising brake lag, which is the time it takes between the driver operating the controls (park brake/foot brake valve) and the action actually happening at the brakes.

very nice video cleared up the lag issues i was concerned about in air brakes as well as where the sound is coming from when air is released out the exhaust port when you let off the brake pedal as well as the brake button/throttle's on dash. Its this simple relay component that i over looked. The relay is an important components :)

Let it be noted that air brakes are designed to fail safe. IE if NO air is available ( burst hose) the spring will apply the brakes. There is also the dead man's brake. That is a brake that can apply brakes to the trailer only if it is Jackknifing. Usually fitted to specialist vehicles such as recovery trucks.
