No one wants to discuss the major drawbacks to these Systems, with the biggest being that when there is a refrigerant leak, a typical HVAC Tech can’t perform the work, as the refrigerant must be weighed in based on installed length of tubing. Research before using because they come with vanes that do not circulate the Supply Air like a typical diffuser which is designed to blow air across the ceiling, down the walls, across the floor and then back to the unit. Rarely does the VRT Thermostat ever feel the temperature in the room with control from a thermostat on a distant wall. Big problem. We have installed the VRF in several spaces with occupant complaints and what we found by installing a Change of Value COV trended T’Sensor back to our DDC System, is that the Room temperature hunts from 2~4 Degree F when using the wall thermostat and 6~10 degrees F when contractors leave the VRT Control at the default of using the Return Air Sensor. This problem causes the units to constantly switch from Heat/cool/Heat/cool/etc.. There is more in regard to the up and coming Indoor Environmental Quality, which begs the question of home type Window unit Bug Catcher Filters, which have No Merv rating! The engineer is quick to say the Air is filtered at the incoming DOAS Air (maybe) , but what about all the indoor environment irritants and VOC’s. *If Energy Efficiency is the selling point based on the 2015 IECC or 2018 IECC, then I suggest rethinking and researching. VRF was 1st used and designed for mass Storage Units, where Occupant Comfort is not an issue & Old Historical Buildings where a Flameless install is required. **Refrigerant Hazard based on leak above ceilings with no Refrigerant detection Alarms. Some of the VRF System Volume of Refrigerant exceeds the allowable amount, which requires a Refrigerant Alarm and purge System. It will take one room with a tile left out by a service tech and a significant leak in a VRT System he can’t find and the Air in the Room will be quickly dispersed by the Refrigerant, causing sleepiness to the occupants and possibly death. ***For me, we will stick with DSS Units to provide supplemental Cooling & Heating or only use a VRF System when there is no other alternative in a renovation, such as space to run ductwork all the way down to a low level area that is only used for Offices.
