I run a 2332, 160hp. 40hp stock shroud with bigger 70's fan. 356 aluminum oil cooler. And I modified 40hp stale air heater boxes to fit with my merged 1 5/8 header. I do prop the decklid open about 1 inch, that makes a huge difference as Mike said!! Also as Mike said you must run the rear tin piece otherwise tons of heat goes back up into the engine fan.

Mike, good information. From my experience, the added deck lid vents came in 1970 on the bugs when the engines went to 1600 from 1500. We had one as a kid. In 71, when dual ports were introduced along with the doghouse cooler, 2 more rows of vents were added to the deck lid. So I agree that the factory saw the need for additional air and added them as the engine needs increased.

Great video Mike! My methods are: 1. 1600 engine case (and larger) 2. Doghouse shroud/cooler 3. 35mm late cooling fan 4. Full flow filter 5. No front engine seal but tin there along with all cooling tins (a little dusty 😕) 6. In 100* temps lid propped 7. VR1 racing oil - if engine is hot this oil withstands heat 8. Compression at 9 and under for street driven engine

Nice work! you might like Kendall racing better. I have had VR1 break down under a lot of stress. but never Kendall.

I run a 2332 40hs shroud, 30mm oil pump, type 4 doghouse, have all the tins, & even the rear skirts because i don't run the cool tins and have the stock tins under the cylinders, (no sleds) & not to mention a remote 36 pass hideaway Cagero oil cooler with thermostat, 1.75 merged sidewinder and no heat problems.😮

cool tins work better. just saying. have you ever ran them?

Hi, I really enjoy your work on vws, I noticed that you use a electric da sander, can you let me know what it is, I'm a old guy that's tired of the noise from my compressor, thanks Mark

There must be a way of fitting another fan that cuts in when the engine reaches a certain temperature...or perhaps fit extra blades to the fan shroud???
@Mikefngarage Жыл бұрын
you can get the thermostatic oil cooler switch when your running 2 coolers that works well.

I have a 1965 Beetle with a stock 1600 dual port, single carb, with an external oil cooler and fan under the package tray. It also has freeway flyer gears. It runs hot at highway speeds, 65-70. Timing is perfect. Carb is rich. All stock tin is in place. I don't really want stand offs or getting a convertible deck lid. Is this my only solution. 🙂
@voicesonair Жыл бұрын
At high speed your fan is just not cooling anymore..air-cooled motors will get hot at high speeds...an oil temp gauge is great idea if you do a lot of highway driving...
@Mikefngarage Жыл бұрын
tire sizes? head ports clear? should not be running hot like that. Try the Front tin maybe but you should not need to on a stock car. Compression ratio high? premium fuel? something is missing in the puzzle.
@vayabroder729 Жыл бұрын
Maybe the freeway flyer gearing is not letting the fan go at sufficient rpms? You can also try using a Porsche 356 generator pulley which is a smaller diameter than VW and makes the fan go a little faster. It fits right on to VW generators and alternators. Also you could try making up a 12” x 1” air scoop out of aluminum plate and mounting it on the right rear torsion bar area and duct it into the front engine tin on that side; you need to cut a hole on that front engine tin and attach a hose to it.

What is the CR of the heads? Were they fly cut?? That will have a huge impact on heat. All tin and SEALS good and in place?

Have you ever run a 356/912 aluminum oil cooler under a 36HP shroud on a larger than stock engine? Just curious if it's worth the effort/expense. Thanks, Mike.
@Mikefngarage Жыл бұрын
personally I like the 36hp dog house. even though it is not quite engineered as the original, it is much easier to work on dual carbs in an early car. Still cools just fine. Some guys are full flow and a really big cooler no stand up at all for racing or real street. They work too.

If you want to keep a 36 horse shroud the 356 cooler is good (but not anywhere near a doghouse fan and cooler).
@b.chuchlucious5471 Жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah I'd like to run a 36 doghouse, but I use Berg linkage and I understand it won't fit properly (crooked) due to the backing plate holes being offset on those Scat shrouds. @@TheDasbull

Are those badges helpful for flow?
@Mikefngarage Жыл бұрын
actually yes. they are angled and catch air when going down the road. putting more pressure on the vent.

'68-'70 bugs had no decklid vents (except on convertibles). '71 they started with dual rows of horizontal decklid vents. I think "73-up they went to four rows of horizontal decklid vents.

as they got the dog house. yup

Absolute crap , how many cfm would a pict34 draw, by adding twins doesn't increase engine capacity or air used , the cylinder size determines that unless supercharged
@Mikefngarage Жыл бұрын
hey it is what it is. Lots of guys have had these problems from big fans. especially dual carbs starving for air when at top end.

plus why did VW engineers put more vents in the 68 and up and even more in the mid 70s if there was no issues. Things to think about.

@@Mikefngarage check not all later models did get vented decklids, but I said twin carbs won't make any difference
