@@stevenhida not any movie. Primer is the complete opposite and really takes a lot to get your head around. Most people need to rewatch it several times. Then there's tons of movies in-between, e.g. 2001: A Space Odyssey, where there's lots of interpretations. Not all movies are dumb comedies (which there's nothing wrong with), some are serious, some are more documentary like and accurate, some are pure art, etc.

@@lost4468yt Most are utter rubbish. The problem comes when people take their science "education" from movies. I'd wager the vast majority think bullets throw bodies, when the only thing that does that is relatively slow neurological spasms. Now you could say it doesn't matter, "it's just fun", but when such misconceptions fuel public opinion on major events in the real world we have a problem.

Movie mistake: The emergency landing is supposed to take place at Ramstein Air Base in Germany and this is where the F15's take off from. As far as I know, Ramstein never had a fighter wing equipped with F15's. They only had F16's at Ramstein. Also they have wrong base codes on the tail, "RS" would be correct for Ramstein. -BR, ex German Air Force CH53 mechanic.

@@siddhantpatel7573 Well usually it's the name of the Base for Air Force units and the name of the State for Air National Guard units. Few exceptions like "FF" (First Fighters) for 1st Fighter Wing and BC (Battle Creek) for Michigan ANG ... There is a pretty short article on it on Wikipedia and you'd probably find more on veteran boards if you search for Air Force Tail Code. Navy is a bit more complicated (there's a logic to it and it's kind of carrier related but not that easy to memorize), but can be found the same way.

@@DefenderTIM Hmm, yeah that was full of bad stuff, but it doesn't move Die Hard II off the top. The problem with the latter is that the entire premise of the movie is just impossible: the baddies keep the tower from communicating with the planes, thereby blackmailing them, holding the lives of everyone flying at ransom. I mean, plenty of James Bond movies have impossibly inaccurate aviation stuff, but they're not the main plot of the film!

I was an extra in this movie. The ground scenes were filmed with our squadron, the 59th FS out of Eglin AFB. We filmed it in Columbus Ohio during October of 1996 at Rickenbacker ANG base. Long night getting those few short ground scenes. I'm the guy in front of the F-15 as the camera pans by who's raising his hands. Always cool to briefly see 19 year old me. KC-135 guy. Flying booms have an auto disconnect when their limits are exceeded, and the plane is chock full of fuel valves and fuel pumps to control when and where fuel goes. Furthermore, actually lighting off JP-8 or jet-A fuel is surprisingly difficult, it only really does it when aerosolized. It wouldn't really burn up into a fuel tank like that. Aircraft fuel tanks, similarly, despite being full of fuel, aren't that at risk of explosion, because the fuel needs to be aerosolized to catch fire, and the stoichemetric ratio with oxygen just right to explode. Counter-intuitively, this means that fuel tanks are riskier when they're close to empty, and are mostly full of fumes. The one example I can think of a fuel tank blowing up midflight was a 747 that had a fuel tank lit up by faulty electronics, while the tank was almost empty. The fumes caught fire, the tank exploded, and the plane disintegrated. I remember loving this movie as a kid. Now it looks cheesy as hell, the 747 driving around like a need for speed car was cringey as fuck.

8:00 Jet fuel is effectively diesel fuel or kerosene, it's not that flammable in large quantities, (quantities not pushed through an diesel injector). There are plenty of KZbin videos where people drop a lit match into an open jar of the stuff and the match is just goes out. The likelihood of flame being able to exist at all, then travel up the stream faster than the air that is rushing by is zero, but it's Hollywood so enjoy. :-D

It's spelled "chaff" and it rhymes with the first syllable of "after." Chaff is similar to Christmas tree tinsel and does not burn, making it unsuitable for pretty special effects. Flares burn and make for more impressive special effects.

Unrelated to the video (which was great), but I learnt on the news this morning that an F-15C Eagle on a training mission out of RAF Lakenheath sadly crashed in the North Sea. The plane's been found by the Coast Guard, but the pilot is still missing. I very much hope he/she is OK. We count on our chief NATO ally to provide a credible western defence more than, I think, has ever properly been appreciated in the UK, certainly in my lifetime. This is a stark reminder of the risks American pilots take 24/7 to protect foreign skies.
