My dad was one of the guys tearing down the goalpost at 2:23:00 . They marched it a mile and half uphill to the cadet area

Kiel was a quarterback and a punter . I never realized how much he contributed to the team. Air force played a good efficient game ! If Kiel had not been injured the game might have been closer but O hara did a good job in the fourth quarter.

Harry Kalas and Paul Maguire on the call.

Harry Kalas refers to the color guy as “George”

@@ajworden Yeah. It appears my source was wrong. The only announcing George I can think of is George Connor.

His voice is completely unfamiliar to me and I watched a lot of college football back then.

@@ajworden George Connor (Conner?) is my educated guess, because I see him calling a bowl game with Harry Kalas in 1984. I know George Connor was calling NFL games in the 60's and maybe early 70's, so maybe I can find one and compare.

@@gregster61you would be correct, it is George Connor.

Games like this showed me right away that Gerry Faust didn't have it as a college coach certainly not for a school like Notre Dame. I don't know what they were thinking hiring a high school coach with no college coaching experience but it was a terrible decision.

Sums up Gerry Faust. Go on the road beat undefeated #1 Piit & Dan Marino. Play 1982 eventual National Champion Penn State tough at home. Lose 24-14. If ND beats AF and then by their standards an average USC team (8-3 John Robinson last season first time around) ND finished 8-2-1 and goes to a good bowl game. Instead he loses both ends up 6-4-1, and starts 1983 1-2 and it was basically over.

Glad to see a military school knock off a top team like Notre Dame !
