Air gun seismic source

An air gun is used for marine reflection and refraction surveys. It consists of one or more pneumatic chambers that are pressurized with compressed air at pressures from 2,000 pounds per square inch to 3,000 pounds per square inch (14 to 21 MPa). The air gun array is submerged below the water surface, and is towed behind a ship. When the air gun is fired, a solenoid is triggered, which releases air into a fire chamber which in turn causes a piston to move and thereby allowing the air to escape the main chamber and to produce a pulse of acoustic energy. Air gun arrays are built up of up to 48 individual air guns with different size chambers, the aim being to create the optimum initial shock wave with minimum reverberation of the bubble after the first shot.

you can have hydrophones, that detect pressure variation, or you can have bottom ocean sensors, that can be multicomponent and work like a sismographer...more or less... the variaion of pressure in the water are the result of the wave relfection, that later is processed, reducing noise and making some corrections and you end up with a seismic line (or seimic volume)

Depending on the airgun they only produce about the same noise and vibration as a ships propellor when it cavitates. Active sonar is much louder.

@@bengarcia9612 Like that matters. Most seismic airguns used in oil searches produce louder sounds than active sonar. You can hear it quite clearly on the other side of the Atlantic, while active sonar won't reach those distances.

Michael Caplin then you may have read in his analysis that airguns can go up to a whopping 232 db in extreme cases, to give you a reference in the bubblehead world the first big news experiment using a sonar source (and how it affects wildlife specifically whales) produced 226 db around 3kHz iirc. Just shy of an airgun and that was a miniature sonar much quieter than is used on naval vessels. While the actually db and freq range is classified I can say that all US sonars (sans SURTASS and other low range) are well in excess of the maximum of an airgun. Ill say its at least 235... LFA (which isn’t really used any more) cranks out 240 declassified. also worth nothing that SOSUS was able to hear sonar pulses from the north sea in the arctic circle from the Caribbean AKA across the ocean. Once the seismic air blast is fired into a solid deposit and reflected back to the hydrophones, What happens next, I mean how is the data picked up by the hydrophones analyzed and computed?
