Partially deaf due to Vietnam War. Had something similar done to me at work years ago. About 1 inch from my good ear. She didn't expect my unthinking immediate reaction to this stupid prank - backhand elbow to her nose - breaking it. She wanted to press charges until informed she could be prosecuted for assault. HR fired her when they learned she'd done it to others that day.
