Another great project as usual. The opening made me laugh because we've all been there...knocking everything over trying to reel in a hose.

Excellent reel! And good editing on the short that snagged my eyes. Only regret is that there's no way in h#// I'm ever going to achieve "shop perfection" like this. What a shop!

Nice job, man. I've been enjoying your videos over the years and you have made some super nice projects. The 1" vertical belt sander is definitely one of my favorites. The brake mechanism on this hose reel makes it. Great design. Thanks for sharing your work with us. I love seeing how happy you are with your work upon completion of each project.

Brilliant! Great design and practical! Like you, I can't live without my hose reels. The one in the garage is for 75' of 3/8" hose on a retractable reel, and the one in my basement shop is for 25' of 3/8" hose with a hand crank. I love your design from wood though. Looks cool, too! :)

You could always incorporate a recoil spring, like on lawn mowers, into your design to help rewind the hose. A little interesting design and it would work great. Thumbs Up on this present design for sure...

Great job, way better than my commercial reel. If you can design an auto retract then I would highly recommend that feature, I love mine.
@JustinDepew
@JustinDepew Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I attempted designing an auto retract but the extra parts and springs were going to get expensive and it started to make less sense as a DIY project. Sometimes the simple path is the right path.

If hoses are wrapped up like rappelling ropes, they roll and unroll very nicely without turmoil. For more information, This Old House has a video on how to wrap up a cord.

In my life, I've never thought of using a router to trim dowels flush. That's a great little tip, instead of creating fine dust and using up a sanding disc.

Cool build - a couple of questions 1. It looks like the Swivel joint added a lot of friction. Is it an issue / anything better to reduce friction? 2. Reaching under the Reel to release the brake looks a bit awkward. Any ideas to move the Brake actuator to one side? 3. The Wind-up handle looks difficult to use versus a longer, bigger handle. Not an issue just curious how well it worked 4. To modify the design for Vacuum for Dust Collection instead of Air pressure, any thoughts on what would need to be changed? (Bigger pipes, Replacing the Swivel Joint to redirect the output to a Shop vac, etc) ps the View from the Inside looking out at 23:18 was awesome 🙂
@JustinDepew
@JustinDepew Жыл бұрын
Earl - 1. The swivel joint adds hardly any friction, it must be an illusion due to the video. 2. I'm just an awkward person...it's not that awkward in real life. 3. It's not difficult, it works as expected. It could be made longer by using a longer piece of pipe if desired. 4. Definitely bigger pipe and a different swivel type. I actually have this on my list for a future project!

Very nice and great for those that want to have everything in their shop made themselves, but with hose reels available off the shelf for $40 and the cost of materials these days, it would dave a ton of time and money just to buy one instead.
@DonBarthel

I feel that you glossed over the hardware parts. Like what is that tee in the center of the reel? And did you cut your own threads in the pipes?
@DonBarthel
@DonBarthel Жыл бұрын
And how did you connect your compressor? So many gaps!
@JustinDepew
@JustinDepew Жыл бұрын
Hi Don, to answer your questions: 1. The tee in the center is just a tee. I used a brass barbed fitting on the tee to connect my air hose but most air hoses have a threaded fitting that will go directly into the tee. 2. I did not cut the threads. I bought them that way. 3. I connected my air compressor with a short air hose to the swivel connector with a standard quick connect fitting.

Not criticism, but Teflon tape is not a sealant, but is a lubricant for tightening up the fittings, to help make sure it does seal.

How did you secure the reel to the axle so when winding the hose back in the reel doesn't freewheel on the axle?
@JustinDepew
@JustinDepew Жыл бұрын
It's not secured. The fact that the hose goes from the axle through the dowels in the reel keeps it from freewheeling.

I always appreciate the detail in your builds, but you can buy a hose reel from Harbor Freight that costs less than what you just spent in materials and it automatically retracts.

He is running a KZbin channel and has to come up with content and it seems like he tries to be original - that wouldn’t be easy. Also, people outside the US watch the videos and some of them mightn’t have access to Harbor Freight, or equivalent.

@@TheLindsay720 Indeed, and those cheap hose reels are just crap. A decent compressed air hose reel is about 200€.

You could have bought one for cheaper than making one. The one you could have bought would self retract, stop when and where you want it to, and spin true.
