Air Layering from a garden Maple

Watch as Dan shows Millie how to make an air-layer from one of the many self-sown Maple seedlings that he finds growing all over his garden.
Here he uses a reusable plastic root growing ball for the first time (easily available from Amazon), which is then packed with sphagnum moss and helped along with some rooting hormone/gel and 'Super Thrive'.

Nice video great to see you sharing knowledge with a young person, I'm fairly new and any instructional videos like this make it so much easier.. Would be great to see some more videos of you talking over Bonsai techniques. You're a natural teacher, so calm and clear. Directional pruning I always get confused over. And how do you know which trees will bud back from old wood and which won't. Amazing glazed pot videos too.

Hi Luigi, thanks for your kind comments. I have recently been selling off most of my bonsai as I can no longer lift the big ones, so I have very few left that I can talk about, but maybe when the weather improves I may be able to do a video or two on some bonsai techniques.

Yes, the cambium layer is taken off when the "ring of bark" is removed to make the air-layer

I have a 20+ year old Japanese maple with 4 large leaders. All the leaders have multiple branches, can I do an air layer on one of the branches of each separate leader at the same time? Will that kill the tree? I'm having a hard finding an answer. Thanks

You may get away with it but I think it would be better to only do 2 at first and then when they've produced roots you could try doing the other two.

It's not essential but it certainly helps - check with your garden centres whether there is any equivalent chemical that can be used to encourage rooting.
