As we buckle up ready for the 2017 season, let's have a recap of the official rules of the sport. With penalty seconds incurred for incorrect angles flown through the Air Gates as well as the risk of disqualification for various infringements, the Race Director and team of officials are rigorous when it comes to scrutiny. As with any motorsport, it's the rules that can make or break a world title bid.

About: The Red Bull Air Race World Championship features the world's best pilots in a motorsports competition based on speed, precision and skill. Using the fastest, most agile and lightweight racing planes, Red Bull Air Race pilots navigate a low-level aerial race track made up of air filled pylons, flying at speeds reaching 230mph while withstanding forces of up to 10g. The objective is to complete the course, navigating the 65 feet high specially designed inflatable pylons known as Air Gates in the fastest possible time. Red Bull Air Race pilots must pass between the Air Gates in the correct position taking care not to touch them with their wings. The pilots compete for points at each Red Bull Air Race and the one who accumulates the most at the end of the season is crowned Red Bull Air Race World Champion.

Dude, same. Exactly same. I started searching about information on plane racing for research purposes and Red Bull Air Race was always the number one search result. (I'm actually rewatching this video now for a refresher.) I started to get interested in it after watching these videos and reading about it in articles only to find out the race was discontinued last year. A little disappointed, but maybe I can find past races online somewhere.

some of these rules seem stupid. climbing while entering a gate or not being perfectly level seems to actually reduce safety as you have to do much more drastic maneuvers to follow the race lines you are wanting. the level wing rule especially seems like it would increase the chance of accident

Noah Hesshaimer the new rule for 2018 is if you go over 10 G in more than .6 of a without going 12g you get a two second penalty. If you go 12 G at all you are disqualified

My guess before say a loop if the plane is not wings level before pulling that hard it's easy to pull off course, increase stall speed etc. Not 100 percent sure though

These rules answer why I don't watch this.... has to be level through the corners? limit on g's? this would be like having speed limits and stops signs on an f1 track

The level has to do with aerodynamics, aircraft literally slip in the air when not level and can lose lift and crash, the g thing is a bit lower than it needs to be in most people’s opinion but an aircrafts wing will just snap if put under such pressure in a short amount of time like that, 12gs on your body makes you feel like you’re 1000 pounds you know.

Not really. Requiring level corners, no climb or sink, such and so forth is actually going to be EXTREMELY difficult to do. Maintaining your speed while NOT over controlling the airplane requires extreme skill. I never knew any of these things, and I've never watched the air race, but these stipulations make me go "wow, thats not easy, all while maintaining maximum speed." It's more akin to requiring an F1 car to go between two cones at the entrance and exit of every corner, and the driver cannot be skidding the tires at all. Except, this is in three dimensions, not two, like in ground racing!
