This was the old hospital before Huddersfield Technical college. The older part also used to be the library. I went here for about 4 years and can barely work out the rooms I used. Great vid.

This complex definitely has the feel of a site that gradually expanded, rather than one that was built all at once. It's remarkable how intact the buildings remained despite so many smashed windows letting the elements in.

Brings back a few memories from when I was at college there. It was Huddersfield Technical College at that time, it merged with Dewsbury college a few years after I left to become Kiklees college. I'm pretty sure the room you were just before you found the yellow programer was one of my class rooms, where I studied electrical principles.

Just down the road from me! My dad worked there in the 80’s as a heating engineer. When he worked nights I’d visit him and we’d play snooker in the sub basement with the security guard. It was in the old doctors lounge, I didn’t know of any tunnels but it was a creepy place as it was once the Huddersfield infirmary

Hey TheSecretvault i know a few things abour the Kirklees College started life as Huddersfield Infirmary in 1831 up until 1967 when the Ramsden Technical College moved in, they paid £105,000 for the site. In September 1968 the first students began lectures and the first new building on the site opened in 1969 and there is a X-ray room till there and the they abandoned it has they built a new £47m purpose-built Waterfront campus at Chapel Hill.

Such a shame the morons have been in and trashed the place. But what a maze of a place it is. Guess that would not have been such a problem for a college where your probably just concentrating on one subject, thus staying in the one area. But imagine a secondary school laid out like that, you would need a map to find your next classroom! But it's sad to see it messed up like this, there is a shed load of old and modern history in that place. Great explore Matt, with some difficult conditions to contend with. Was great to follow along.

I don't want to speak ill of your "recent" co-explorers Matt, but, this is the best format - you don't need the hang-on's, keep out there doing what you do - sail your own ship, don't let the others use your sails.

The college was just left as they built and brand new college in a different part of the town, and the tunnels you went down to start off with were part of the old hospital building which was later turned into the Huddersfield technical college and other building where added then it changed into Kirklees college.

There are plans to redevelop the site, turning it into a mix of residential and some retail. The aim is to keep the grade 2 listed old infirmary building. But these plans have been in the pipeline for years. I've lost count of how many times that place has been on fire since it was closed. I'm suprised there is anything left.

@weedfreer3 жыл бұрын
to be fair, looking at the age of the place, the heating costs, and maintenance alone must've been reasons enough for it to have been relocated. That's before you consider the chances of asbestos having been used in its construction. These old buildings may look solid but, scratch the surface, they're an absolute money pit and a potential hazard to health to boot.
@nannyofmany83153 жыл бұрын
@@weedfreer So why not take it down, build affordable housing? Just a a thought!
@weedfreer3 жыл бұрын
@@nannyofmany8315 yeah, completely agree...there's massive issues surrounding under use of brown field sites as a result of landlords keeping hold of the land and deciding not to do anything with it either to have as a 'just in case' plot should they ever need to expand or as a method to prevent competitors developing their shops/factories upon it. There is also the issue that old building constructed of old/oftentimes hazardous to health building materials cost exponentially more to demolish on account of the fact that they have to be surveyed for the hazardous materials and then taken down around them. In many cases like that it's cheaper to just allow them to rot...which is not good for the housing market and, if were released to developers, would bump up the cost of any housing built upon that land. You then run into the problem of the fact that housing in that area will likely have an upper ceiling price of lower than the value you could build the homes for. As such, either we have to take on the cost of demolition/redevelopment as the tax payer and then absorb the ongoing costs of council/social housing stock that gets built upon it or accept that the old husk of a building will have to remain in situ as it's the cheapest option.
@nannyofmany83153 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately you are right. Hence why it’s still standing, this Blot on the landscape. Until one day it is recommissioned for a business park enterprise or suchlike! Frustrating!!

It's typical with that they are doing with the college's. I know a few people who went there. I know of a college that's getting closed down. A senior school my older sons went to, moved buildings ( for a high tech building). A school my youngest two went to, got shut down, due to it sinking into the mud an inch a year. There's also schools that have merged into one.... To save money!! Just pointless and doesn't help with the over crowded classes.
