Yes, it was a great vid. It makes me wonder how many pellets and time I wasted trying to get a new gun shooting good groups with out cleaning the barrel. But it is human nature to share information to others, since we are the only living entity who can do it. If I see your premise correctly, (sorry if I am wrong, but I know the trends of today), this vid is not a sacrifice to 'the community", (and nothing should be outside of voluntary charity). He did it to help solidify viewership by sharing good information, and IMO, there is everything right about that. I do the same with my business, selfishly, to make money, and it helps all my customers and industry. I think a big difference is, in my day, we were taught to go for our dreams in our free market. Today, we are taught it is more noble to give it all away, and attack those who achieved their dreams yesterday, by claiming it is more moral to give than achieve. But yes, it was another great vid. Sorry Steve. I see the premise of such things even if Mr. Leo had not. I am just tired of seeing people taught that what we give is more important than what we achieve, as it leads to us thinking it is OK to take from some to give to others. My morality says that is theft. Hmm, "It is better to achieve, than it is to receive."? I would say that is a golden rule. :)

Ballistol is the only product I use on all my guns, air and powder. Works on all surfaces and does a great job of removing fouling. I spray some down the barrel, rotate it all around to coat, let it sit overnight, and then run patches through until clean and dry. Got tired of the fumes and caustic chemicals of other products. Hi Steve, I'm a complete beginner to air rifles. I live in the UK and bought my first air rifle which has just been delivered. I fired 5 pellets and decided to not fire anymore until seeing how much more experienced people handle shooting. I've watched a few how to videos and have to say that your presentations are clear and very easy to follow. I've been a carpenter most of my life and I would always take time at the start of every day to sharpen up so knowing the value of looking after ones tools to make the job effortless and precise is second nature. Big thank you for your insights and tips cleaning the barrel and suggested items to use. So i made my own trimmer line patch- bore cleaner and spent an hour or so pulling dirty patches thru the .22cal FlashPup before they were clean using a little CLP. Today the Patchworm arrived and all i can say is WHAT A SYSTEM! Used a bunch of Ballistol lubed patches to clean the 100-150 pellet shot bore after i cleaned it with the HM patch cleaner and after the patches were clean i decided to use some J-B bore cleaning compound on a patch to test. OMG you'll have to try this amazing stuff! I literally spent an hour pulling dirty, lead embedded patches one after one (both sides) using this stuff. At one point i thought dirty patches would never end. Bottom line is this you have to try this bore cleaning compound!...it will cleanse a bore far beyond what Ballistol will clean...shockingly and it cleans deep! Thanks for an excellent tutorial! I didn't learn of the necessity of barrel cleaning until having watched many videos on KZbin. Yours was the most informative. I have a RWS Model 35 that was purchased back in 1975 in .177 that had many hundreds of pellets through it without cleaning. After storage for about twenty years, I cleaned the barrel thoroughly and was amazed at the accuracy gained! I was able to obtain 3/8" groups using the RWS Super Dome pellet at thirty-five yards after this cleaning. I hope you never lose your enthusiasm for airguns as this is what makes your videos so watchable!

Thanks for sharing. Shot break barrel for years. Just bought my first PCP last year. Ordered the kit you showed here. Bought the Hatsan Flash QE. Lots of positive reviews on KZbin concerning price and accuracy. Got ok accuracy, but viewer stated they need to be cleaned right out of the box, so we shall see. I did shoot several hundred pellets of the cheap Walmart Crosman 14 grain if it needed a break in period. They flew like curve balls. Bought the JSB Heavy type and accuracy improved substantially. Have shot multiple groundhogs and a few barn swallows that were pooping all over my fishing boat. I have ordered the JSB Monsters at 25 grains to use for larger varmints, it they shoot accurate enough. Thanks for all the informative videos.

I know this video is old but I appreciate them all. Recently after owning my Air Ventura Avenger for about 1 month it started not holding zero no matter what I ould try. I changed the scope and rings from my powder burners and even a new scope but to no avail. Every time I put it away or refill it to shoot again it's off by 3 inches in a random direction from where I zeroed it. I never bump the barrel or scope I am extra careful. I checked the barrel band screws they were all snug. i checked the Picatinny rail it's all snug. I have a DonnyFL Sumo on it from day one. This all started 5 days ago i even tried cleaning it but the same thing happens. I tried all 3 of your tunes and no change. No matter what i do after I zero it and stop shooting for more than an hour or refill it the thing shoots a=in a random direction again but the groups are still tight its just grouping 2 + inches away from where I zero i. So frustrated ready to return it as nothing works and I have seen it work before this happened which is a bummer. Anyway, sorry for the rant. Just frustrated, lol.

Some scopes are really sensitive to temperature change. Also lately pellets haven't been great either. But what you describe sounds like approach/hold to me. You wanna be sure it's the exact same every time. Best, Steve

I don't think I can add much to what the guys have already said, but I didn't want to not say anything at all, so this is just my thanks to you for this particular video! You know what it takes to get results, and the first thing you have shown us is that having the patience to properly clean your gun, however stressful it might be, is a task that is better accomplished before your shooting session begins, not after it ends, and will get results that skipping steps won't allow. I liken this to the guy who buys a new break barrel springer and complains about it's lack of accuracy when he has never mastered the "artillery hold"!?! If you want to accurately shoot these modern air guns, and be successful with these great new technologies, in this wonderful sport, you must take advantage of the knowledge that you, many others like you, and your sponsors, so freely give us here on youtube, and in the many forums. Those who erroneously believe that air guns shoot the same way that firearms do, and aren't willing to put the time in to learn, and master, the different techniques involved, might just as well stay with firearms, as they will never be a successful air gun shooter. Thanks for doing this video Steve. As a fellow Pellet Rifle enthusiast I thought of a couple things I would like to mention to your viewers, hope you don't mind me putting in my two cents. A note or two to add: When cleaning Break Barrel air rifle: * If you leave ANY oil in the barrel, even the smallest amount, it could cause Dieseling. * Dieseling makes your gun louder when shot. The sound level is usually compared to .22 short or Filbert ("smokeless" powder ammunition). * Dieseling looks cool 'cause smokes going out the barrel but it's NOT a condition you want you air rifle to be in. FPS speeds become erratic. Grouping diameters tend to get bigger due to the FPS changing. * Dieseling could ruin the air rifle's breach seal(s). * Purposefully Dieseling your Air Rifle could void your air rifles' Warranty. * Purposefully Dieseling your Air Rifle could be ILLEGAL in your area depending on where you live. If using CLEANING PELLETS It's seems best (to me and I think Rick Eutsler would agree) to push cleaning pellets through a break barrel air rifle with a cleaning rod. DO NOT SHOOT CLEANING PELLETS (with a break barrel air rifle). The felt cleaning pellets are not as tight (as a lead pellet) in the barrel, it takes very little air pressure to shoot it through the barrel which means it's similar to dry firing was far as the piston is concerned. I am speaking from experience in this regard. I did shoot one (cleaning pellet) out of my Remington Express when I first got it because I thought it ok since I saw one of the salesman at a Cabela's do it to an air rifle right after mentioning that you should never dry fire an air rifle. In my experience when I shot the cleaning pellet through the air rifle, the piston DID "SLAM home" (the transfer port). The rifle shot fine afterwards but it could have damaged the piston seal. A Pellet gun enthusiast should keep a Pellet Rifle Logbook for each airgun (kinda of like a Man's scrap book). Keep all the DATA from day1 on >>>>O I use 50 LBS test Fluorocarbon with 5 patches spread out on a very long line so that a patch is entering the barrel right as one is about to be pulled out. This way there are no more than 2 patches in the barrel at any given time. I spread the patches out and use a long line which allows me to pull multiple patches per each pull. This means that I can do 3-4 Pulls and be done. It is important that you have no more than two patches IN the barrel at any given time for this method. Otherwise it becomes difficult to pull the patches through. I will usually run strictly dry patches thru the first round just to get a good idea of how dirty the barrel is. Then I attach new patches and lightly oil the the first couple of patches, the other patches behind the oiled patches do not get any oil as they need to be dry so the pull the oil out of the barrel.

Hi Steve, I have found that if you are very careful you can spray brake cleaner with the little tube that comes with the can while the barrel is pointing down so the brake cleaner does not get on any of the seals. Only enough to run out the muzzle is needed. Then you only need two or three patches run through the barrel to completely clean and dry the barrel. You will also notice that the second patch will come out completely white. WALAH you are done cleaning the barrel.

The Crown is the Mother of ALL Airguns IMO from what ive seen and heard. its gonna take me prolly 2 years to save enough for it cause theres like 4 other guns on my list ahead of it, but its gonna be mine. great advice. my Air Arms EV2 requires barrel clean every 250 shots, my Air Arms Prosport springer every 1500-2000. I only use JSB. both tend to shoot well right after cleaning, but I have a friend who owns a TX200 which needs cica 100 shots before the groups start closing. every barrel is diferent and you are so right to say get to know it. I've been using patch worm kits and ballistol for airguns from .177 to .50 for the past couple of years . great kits . The bigbores can get very lead fouled( pure lead home cast projectiles) and some times a nylon brush is needed to loosen it up . I keep a nylon muzzle loader ram rod for unloading the projectile at the end of a hunt and have a nylon brush for that . Dose not take much to loosen the lead up .

With my air rifle right out of the box I use Brake cleaner in an aerosol spray with a small tube to direct the liquid only enter the barrel. I never get the liquil on any seal or piston on the air rifle. After spraying the brake cleaner down the barrel I pull a clean white patch through the barrel. It should come out slightly dirty then I will pull a second patch through and it will be perfectly clean like it was brand new. If you can pull more patches through, but they will also be clean. The brake cleaner cleans the barrel perfectly. Not necessary to clean again until the barrel gets dirty from shooting many times. I clean even my other rifles and pistols the same way. I even spray the brake cleaner down the gas tube of my AR-15. I am a competitive target shooter and all my rifles are very accurate. My AR-15 will put 10 shots inside a dime at 100 yards. My 1,000 yard rifle which is a 6 mm Norma Br. which will consistently less than two inches at 400 yds. and my best group at 1,000 yards was 3.25 inches for 5 shots.

What do you think of polishing the barrels. I’ve seen a few guys that swear by it, and they’ll dry lube their slugs. I was browsing through your videos and didn’t see anything on polishing. Excellent video. I’ve actually been pretty nervous about cleaning my PCPs because I know you’re not suppose to get any solvent/fluids in the plenums or actions of the guns. Just redid a springer my dad had given me, pretty abused, he’s not a gun guy. Added a threaded end for a moderator. Should have that ready to shoot by Monday or Tuesday. Thank you for the video. Hi Steve, had a really hard time trying to get the patchworm through the very small breach of my Wildcat ... no problem with the Impact ... but that WC is soooooo tight it seemed like it was an exercise in frustration. In response to the tightness, I am using a Crown Saver with Napier Rifle Clean. I think that Napier Rifle Clean comes in 14 meter rolls from AoA. Cut them in 3" lengths and because they are so wide, you can cut them in half down the middle ... therefore you actually get 28 meters in a box. I take I patch ... and half of another one ... and fold over on itself until you get 4 layers deep. Apply a little Ballistol on the outside layer and rub it into the patch. Insert the Crown Saver from the muzzle to the breach, fold the patch you have just made through the loop of the Crown Saver ... now you are 8 layers thick in your .25 Wildcat barrel. It'll take about 40 pounds of pressure to pull it through the barrel and you'll hear the patch scrubbing the barrel (not to worry, it's a happy sound). That first patch will have so much gunk on it even if you've only shot about 100 rounds. Flip the patch over and do the same thing with the other side of the patch. Then, if you want, you can take a little round patch from the Patchworm bag and put it inside the patch you have made with the Napier, because by this time you have really squeezed the snot out of the Napier. Pull two wet patches (both sides) through the gun, fire the gun about 5 times and let it sit for a couple of hours. Because the breach is so tight you may want to clean a little of the Ballistol up from the bottom of the breach plate using a Q-tip with a small piece of paper towel to make it a little more absorbent. After you have waited long enough run two more dry patches through (both sides) and that barrel will be squeaky clean. The good thing about my Wildcat is it loves a clean bore ... don't have to fire a ton of shots through to reach lead equilibrium in the barrel ... after the first shot, the rest will fall right into the original POA. Lans and grooves are the section names of normal rifling, unless we are talking polygonal rifling like H&K and Glock uses (octagonal on .45's). Great video by the way, I love the tips you share Steve. The soda straw thing is great!

Suck it up and get some rubber boots...lol! I'm absolutely loving all the specs on the new FX crown. I really want one but I don't have the money to spend right now. And my hatsan BT 65 in 25 caliber is a dream come true.... Which by the way came to me out of the box with a perfectly clean Barrel. I ran three patches through it. A dry patch which came out clean. A wet patch just to make sure also clean. And one more dry patch to clean up the wet patch. One more patch with just one drop of oil..... And then I was exploding aspirin at 30 yards. Took less than three minutes to get my leapers accushot 4 x 16 x 44 zeroed at 50 yards. I haven't messed with it since. I hold one and a half mils to two mils over at 100 yds. 25 yards or closer... A 2 Mil Dot hold under does the trick. I would love to get my hands on the FX Crown just to compare.... But sadly as far as I know I am the only serious air-gunner around for hundreds of miles. I have tried my best to get other people involved in the sport and get them started and possibly start a club.... And let's just say I have a lot of interest but nobody puts the money where their mouth is. Hickok45 is north of me as well as 22plinkster and Iraq veteran 8888 is about an hour and a half away in Georgia and he is the only one that I know of that has expressed an interest in airguns. One day when I have the time I mean to go down and meet him. You really should go shooting in the swamp and see how it affects your dope with all that water and humidity. If I could afford to drive to Tampa I do it for you and you can stay at home and be nice and dry and show everybody how to clean a barrel. Lol! Take care and I look forward to the next video.

Thank you. Just got my first PCP and half of the people on the forms insist on washing every pellet with dial and lubing it with specific oils. I figured it was about as effective as doing the same with powder burners.

Thx for yet another interesting informative vid,always interesting to see how other people clean the gun/barrel...may i share one thing i learned about the cleaning''felt pellets'',as you mentioned and even as FX sugests ,to simply shoot them...DONT,i have a wildcat .25 and did just that only to learn there stays a lot of lint-like junk comming from the felt pellets behind in the shroud and between the airstripper and the front cap witch comes out bit by bit later on with each shot,affecting the accuracy of the rifle and making it a hell of a job to clean everything out of the shroud later... have a nice day and keep shooting...oh...and may your shooting grounds soon dry up again and when you go back,check underneath your bench for your everage confused aligator ;-)

Nice ... but, I remove the barrel, always. Next I use MAF sensor clear. Cleans well and leaves behind zero residue. I use a nylon brush first (don’t use any type of metal brush, ever!). Spray the MAF cleaner down the barrel and scrub that sucker clean with the brush. Next I also use Balistol but I use swabs or a soft bore snake. Repeat each step two or three times and your barrel will shine like a mirror.

I'm a traditional powder burner firearm guy and have been for over 40 years. I recently got into PCP air rifles as a quieter alternative while shooting small pests. That is one thing that shocked me after watching some videos and reading the forums. Airgunners don't clean their guns like we do and aren't concerned about it in general. That is a big no-no in the powder burning world. You shoot your firearms and you clean them afterwards. You clean and relube your carry gun regularly whether you shoot it or not. I have always don't it that way no matter what it was.

Yeah, I'm that way with my powder burners too but a lot aren't. With airguns, they don't have the chemical fouling and carbon build up the firearms do, so most clean the barrel only when accuracy diminishes or their putting the gun up for long term storage. Steve

Good day Steve, I use 100 lb. fishing line folded and dreadlock of a mop that I cut in 1" lengths to clean my PCP barrels. Ballistol oil is the best, it cares, lubricates, disinfects, protects against rust, crawls in the finest corners, does not become resin, is biodegradable, food safe and skin friendly.

Thanks Steve. I have this video bookmarked so I can come back and review it. I just began using the Patchworm cleaning on my Gamo Urban which I purchased last spring. I lubed the patch and felt cleaning pellet with Ballistol. The first patch & pellet pulled through very hard and came out black. I subsequently pulled two more pellets & patches through and then the black changed color to brown. I'm not sure if that is rust but so far I have pulled more than 20 patches with Ballistol through the bore and they are still coming out with brown residue on them. Should I contiue pulling lubed patches through the bore until there is no brown residue?

That's what I do. Then I pull a bunch of dry ones after a few dry fires to cough the oil outta the transfer port.

@@geojohnson5613 In my experience the brown is the rust and the black is the pellet coatings. Some barrels have a ton of rust in them but it doesn't seem to hurt anything. As soon as you begin shooting a new layer of pellet oil and graphite will be laid down over the rust. Steve

I have a a small pellet pump action hand gun That you pump 9 times and then shoot Well it wasn't performing properly as it did when I bought it And I thought it wasn't any good anymore Well I cleaned it And it got back all of it's penetrating power it had when I bought it About 4-5 years ago So cleaning dose make a big different in the speed that your projectile is going to be pushed out through the barrel A Especially if your barrel isn't clean Just try it , you'll see a difference !!! Cleaning dose work And it probably even helps keep the pump in your air gun from wearing out to soon Sooner than it's supposed to at least 🙂🙂🙂

For those that may loose, or need additional Grub screws, Remember, Grub screw is a UK term for what is called a SET screw in the US. Some how, it has become common to call them Grub screws in the AG world. Your helpful Hardware man is going to look at you like you are from another planet if you ask for Grew Screws. LOL!!! The graphite and lead can hold moisture but it's not caustic as with a powder burner.

The 2 brands are H&N Sport and JSB. As for which type, there's no substitute for experimenting that anyone will be able to reliably provide you. 8-10gr range is a good place to start.

its good to develop a routine and stick with it, for example when i clean my barrel, after that i test pellets out in several sets and look at sets to see if rifle likes a bit of fouling to make tighter groups, some rifles you will notice shoot better clean and others a more fouled barrel, but the only way we can find out is do several sets after a clean barrel, also when switching pellets in a accuracy test its good to clean barrel again or at least run a few through of the next type of pellet, the reason is the barrels lands and groves are effected by the previous pellet type and may embed crud deeper or more shallow depending on pellet type diameter of head and skirt, so the next type of pellet is a janitor to remove crud so it can re foul its self and get used to the barrel, a good confirmation of a pellet in a accuracy test should consist of several sets of 5, that way you can look and compare sets to see your rifles performance, for example after a clean barrel you may in some rifles see a wider group since rifle needs to get fouled a bit to make tighter groups, then you may see several sets of tight groups that stay consistent for many shots, these are your good sets where rifle performs the best, then after shooting many more sets or plinking all day the groups get wide again and this is a hint that the fouling stage of good accuracy is over and time for another cleaning, you can see a good example of the three stages of barrel condition if you shoot many sets, stage 1 is a clean bore, stage 2 is a fouled bore and stage 3 is a dirty bore and with a long long test of many sets and spending a little money on pellets you can see these stages in your rifle, for example my QB78 loves a very fouled bore to shoot good, after a good cleaning my 10.34 grain air arms pellet needs a few sets run through to give great accuracy, if i did not do several sets i would never have noticed it was my best pellet, so this is why its good to do several sets to find them shot numbers where you notice accuracy getting better, decades ago i copied field target shooter method of a 5 set of 5 trial for a pellet after a clean barrel, this gives the pellet a chance to "prove' its self and also gives barrel enough time to show if it like a little fouling or likes staying cleaner, with pumpers i do the same thing and fire dry shots after a couple drops on the pad, i here you about lothar walther barrels my 747 pistol has one, for some pellets it loves clean all the time and for other several sets, also its common for undersized barrels like my QB78 to like lots of fouling since rifling isnt tight or choked, also head and skirt diameter can have an effect on if you have to run a more fouled barrel or clean barrel, looks like a great cleaning routine on this video, the more details you pay attention to the better, for pellet testing i like testing at various ranges and speeds like with pump rifles, some pellets prefer a certain speed, go to slow or go to fast and they can scatter with any rifle be it a PCP, spring, gas ram, pumper, or CO2

I remember the first time I bought a pellet gun from Wal*Mart and test fired it a few times straight out of the box. I always wondered why it would smell like burnt oil after firing it. I later learned about the dreaded "black gunk." If you have an uncleaned break-barrel and look down the breach after firing it, you can actually see aerosolized oil suspended in gas.

Great vid, thx for sharing. I bought this kit for my FX Royale .22 and it seems to hang right at the crown when pulling it thru. Have you experienced this and is it doing any harm to the barrel? You gotta give it a hard pull to get it out.

Ballistol will be fine so long as you don't get any down the transfer port. Just clean as I demonstrated and you'll be fine. If you're still concerned, simply remove your barrel liner before you clean it. Steve

Steve just saw your post and wonder if you could give me your opinion on the Hatsan line of 22cal air rifles, its been 40yrs since I've owned a pellet rifle I owned a Sheridan 20cal and back in the day it was a multi pump that was very accurate. the 2 Hatsan models I'm interested in are the Model 95 & 87 I'll use it for small game & pest control, I'm leaning just a bit towards the 87 because a synthetic stock is more durable, performance seems equal between the 2 and the price 200.00 or just under is something I can afford. Help an old man out here if you can and if you think I'd be better served by another brand don't be afraid to let me know... many thanks for your opinion...

Steve, you said you spent a lot of time culling pellets. I think I know what that is. What tool or device do you use to actually cull the pellet? Does this Improve accuracy and performance enough to do this regularly? Is this necessary? Very new to the sport. Just purchased a Benjamin marauder PCP in 25 Cal. Could you recommend a pellet?

I thought culling a pellet was when you forced it through a metal device or tool that has a hole in it the same size or caliber as the pellet to tweak the skirting of any excess slag & to ensure the caliber is correct(not too big) and not out of round. I’m confused now I saw in another video saying that you don’t wanna completely clean your barrel cause a small amount of graphite and lead is actually good for accuracy in riffled barrels. They said to only run dry patches through and only use solvents every now and then is this true or is a cleaner barrel more accurate? I only just got my first break barrel airgun a gamo varmint rifle I took a couple of pop shots out of the box and it was shooting like 4 inch groupings. After running a couple of dry patches through the barrel I was able to get it down to quarter sized groupings.
