Long before the turboprop version was even heard of, Lockheed built the piston-powered L-10 Electra which spawned a series of aircraft that included the smaller L-12 Electra Junior, the larger L-14 Super Electra and the still larger L-18 Lodestar. This is the reason I like to call the turboprop version the "Electra II," a name coined by American Airlines (Eastern called its improved versions "Super Electras") to describe the improved models after they underwent what was called the Lockheed Electra Achievement Program (LEAP) when three examples crashed after what was determined to be "whirl mode flutter" affected the outboard engine nacelles. During this phenomenon, violent up-and-down oscillation was transmitted to the wings and the flutter frequency decreased to a point where it was resonant with the outer wing panels (at the same frequency, or harmonically related ones), and the oscillation increased until the wings tore off. During the modification program, done at Lockheed's expense, the engine mounts and the wing structures that supported the mounts were strengthened, and some of the wing skins were replaced with thicker material. All future examples featured these improvements built in. Despite these improvements, the public lost faith in the type after the crashes; Boeing had already introduced the 707, and you know the rest.
