For the love of God, thank you for this video. I finally understand why my 4-year old roof shingles are bubbling - roofer didn't pay attention to correct ventilation. 😡

Excellent presentation. I agree that intake ventilation is not given the coverage it deserves. Can you combine roof intake vents with existing bird vents? Can you use intake vents with an overhang (roof)?

Still not sold on a ridge vent. It just doesn't seem like it moves much air. My whole house fan I installed in the hall ceiling myself turns the inside air temperature into the outside air temperature in 5 minutes. HVAC guy who had to get into the attic said he couldn't believe how much more comfortable it was. If we only had a ridge vent he would have roasted alive!

Ihave two gable vents. Would installing gable fans on one end and then the other end pushing the air inside be a ok idea? Basically pushing air inside wit fan and one fan pushing hot air out I have two gable vents and two exhaust turbines on top

Ridge vents work well in cooler climates or small homes gable roofs. On my house, the ridge is 30ft long. Thats about 540-570 sqin outflow. My soffit intakes are 36sqin. Obviously my intakes are suffocating the attic. However the ridge vent only supplies half the exhaust needed for my house to fall into code. The attic is 1050sqft. This means that a large home will need box vents supporting the ridge.

When I say box vent, I mean low profile vents near the ridge. Not something that catches wind intake. Also, putting these on ONE side of the attic to prevent cross sectional windflow in the attic.

If it were me, I would not be pushing ridge vents on customers in the southern USA. Aesthetically I think they are nice, but they are not performance products without some good planning.

Can you have too much intake? I have a ridge vent but my intake under the soffit does not seem adequate. I have plywood panels with little holes in them, and then they put metal soffit under that, again with little holes. I assume the airflow is very restricted as my attic gets very hot in the summer. I have no idea how to calculate the square inches that are there due to the multiple panels. If I cut through the soffit panels and the plywood to install the rectangular shape intake vents, do I risk getting too much air intake?

Can you achieve balanced attic ventilation without using an attic exhaust fan to ensure continuous air change rate under all types of external climate conditions?

I have an unheated 30' x 40' pole building in eastern Washington. The building was metal/plywood/tyvek wrapped when built but is currently only half insulated. I have some machine tools that are heavily collecting condensation in the winter. Is this because the insulation is incomplete? When complete it will have an attic and gable vents on both sides. Thanks!

does a shingle over roof intake vent work in north east with snow and potential of snow/ice buildup?

Great information! I wished I knew before my roof installation. I have winter condensation issues in attic. I changed roof. I am not sure my roofer made sure for balanced ventilation. We have drip edge ventilation. Insulation guy added insulation and sealed openings. But, problem is still there and I believe it's ventilation issue. But, I am not sure how to balance. Whom should I contact? TIA

Idaho homeowner here: this was helpful. I have a new roof on the way, and am considering how to vent better in my attic. Thus replace box vents with ridge vents. What about dormers that stick out? Gets very hot under the one for the MB, which is upstairs. Also, what about the gable vents? will they cause short circuiting with a ridge vent? Great presentation!

Hey! I'm also in idaho I'm a roofing contractor if you want ridge vent you'll need sufficient soffit venting and your gable vents blocked off it will create a cross flow which will not properly vent the moisture out. Seeing this comment three years later I'm assuming you got your roof replaced already.

This dude is offering zero numbers! The difference between gable venting and ridge venting is 10 degrees F at best. This guy is trying to sell ridge vent but he doesnt tell you that they leak and thenines with filters have crapy airflow. Eventhough net free area is 18 sq inches the filter reduces the effective area. Go with soffit vents all around and gable vents and let it go. Ridge vent is easy and very lucrative for contractors to scare you with so they can make 1000 extra bucks per 2000 sq ft house.
