Join me on my journey of discovery! At least half the nutrients in the hydroponic lettuce are from worm castings!
This video is sponsored by VermisTerra. Vitality is superfine earthworm castings. Designed for soil and hydroponic use, Vitality is gentle, won’t burn plants and has no odor. It improves the health of your soil and plants, works faster than regular castings, and boosts growth! Add when watering for easy feeding. Excellent for seed starting, aquariums, self watering reservoirs, hydroponics, aeroponics, houseplants, exotic and struggling plants. My use of vitality was experimental. For best results, follow the instructions on the label.
Strengthen your plants with Vitality and earthworm castings! Use coupon code Jeb at vermisterra.com/
Here is what Uncle Steve from VermisTerra had to share: "The reusing of the water successfully is the key point. It is unheard of in hydro… usually you’re told to dump the water regularly.
Hope you kept this water- it will be even after one year of continuous growing.
The water got healthier and healthier over time, the plant residuals and growing plant waste is being dissolved by microbes. These bacteria eat it and turn it to food. Bacteria keep the water balanced- with hydro systems without this bios-system require dumping. The biologics allow the waste to be digested and balanced. "
Music is "In the Forest" by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. If you enjoyed the music, consider joining me on Patreon at / jebgardener . Then I can keep using awesome music in my videos!

You want to hear a crazy story Jeb? My grandfather did hydroponics at his place when I was a kid in big steel drums outside. He did get a lot of algae so you know his solution? Take the sheet on top with the plants and move it into a temporary water drum, and LIGHT A FIRE UNDER THE NUTRIENT DRUM AND BOIL IT. When it cooled he'd move the plants back. I thought he was crazy, but he did grow the biggest hydroponic tomatoes and basil I'd ever seen!

Onions are tricky in hydroponics. At least for me they are. You can’t let the bulb sit in the liquid for any long period of time or it will rot away and the onion will eventually die. Got to keep just the roots in there, avoid liquid contact with the bulb and then when they start to get big they need support to not fall over. I’ve yet to get what I would consider a successful grow in hydroponics because something winds up happening that kills them off but I have been able to get bulbs a little larger then the size of golf balls. I want to get them softball size onions. Any root vegetable I’ve tried has never gotten good results. I know onion isn’t quite a root vegetable but it was a no go, potatoes were a no go for me, carrots were a no go, peanuts were a no go… anything leafy or fruits off the vine/stem does great in hydroponics for me anyway. My thumb isn’t as green as Jebs thumb though.

This happens to me every time I grow romaine lettuce inside in a tub like that (I use air stones too). I wind up having to use the outside leaves very fast to keep the inside open and growing new leaves or the center rots out and gets moldy. So annoying I stopped growing my lettuce indoors hydroponically. Sucks because it grows so fast that way. Outside gets avoids the rot but the yields are way lower, of course.

These plants do have a bit of root rot, the water levels were too high. You usually add beneficial bacteria to your nutrients, such as hydroguard or great white. You can also use h2o2 Keep a few cm under the net cup, even for when you use a bubbler, and you're golden.

I gave indoor hydroponic bib/romaine lettuce a shot using the general hydroponics 3-part system and I had an awful experience involving a strange bitter chemical flavor even after flushing them. Is this common? I also tried putting the leaves in a bowl of ice water overnight and it slightly took away the flavor, but the aftertaste still had that sort of strange flavor. My roots weren't very developed yet, although the foliage was already to the point where it had formed an entire head of lettuce. Maybe my flush didn't take effect because they were so young, or my nutrient choice is not suitable. Even though I use the same nutrient mix for my herb (thyme, rosemary, sage) section, they do not yield the same aftertaste and are quite transparent and taste like they should. I have fans on everything to keep the ambient temp low enough so I'm at a loss on how to improve the flavor. I want to enjoy my lettuce like Jeb, any advice is greatly appreciated(:

can you experiment with 100, 75, 50, 25 % masterblend and the proportionate amount of miracle grow? im not saying masterblend is expensive but im curious if you can use less supplementing the blue demon and get the same results... i know i know its unholy, but still. inflation and all that
