With these products my lawn is withstanding these extended hot dry spells way better than it ever has before. I started using the biostimulants this year and have definitely noticed a huge difference in the lawn in density, color and overall health. While my neighbours lawns are struggling with the recent heat we have been experiencing here in southern BC Canada. I have been asked many times by neighbours what i am doing when im out in the yard spraying the black gold. I will absolutely be making use of these products in my yearly lawn care routine. Thank you for making these available to us diy lawn care fanatics!

Core Aeration had it's place back in the day, but with the scientific advancements nowadays, (Think beepers to cell phones) Core Aeration is more of a money maker than it is an effective service for a law. This is 18 years of experience talking. If you really want to benefit the lawn, and your goal is healthy turf and/or long-term customers, don't nickel and dime them for "extra" services like aeration like a few of the large national turf companies do, but give them the results they're paying for. We started using Air-8 and our guys love it. They've reported to me it's made a BIG difference. I personally noticed a difference in a day with my lawn. The science behind it is real, and at the end of the day, if you're in lawn care the #1 goal is satisfied customers at a fair price using things that work. Core Aeration while not inherently bad for a lawn, does not give you the same effect as creating a suitable environment for healthy turf and good uptake of nutrients. Lastly, I worked for a "national company" who made millions off "potash and aeration" services all the while NO change in the lawns we serviced. Spend the money on product and not a heavy hole puncher.

John, I’m in the starting stages of a complete renovation (just put down the roundup) of a new (to me) home in St Louis with an atrocious lawn. I have horrifyingly bad compaction (I can actually bounce a ball bearing on some spots) and am planning to till, re-grade, and amend based off the results of a soil test (at the lab as I write), followed by seeding a TTT blend in early September. I’d like to get started on a N-Ext program with my new lawn. What products should I apply during the reno, and when?

Great product. I do have a question though. Had an ok lawn for years, then got sick for 5 years and moss ate up my backyard ad most of my front yard. Got rid of the moss and overseeded the front following Allyns program LCN. BUT THE BACKYARD is a different story. It was mostly bare dirt. I followed the same instructions from. Allyn but it's been 3 weeks and no grass at all. I found out the pH was way low, acidy and hard. In fact when water it takes not 5 minutes to puddle because it is so hard. Any suggestions regarding your products Air8 and Humic or any suggestions are welcome. Thank you very much.

Would you be able to do a video showing how you would overseed and too dress a yard that doesn’t get mechanically aerated?
@sonicbluecoupe
@sonicbluecoupe 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree with one thing you said. Mechanically poked holes do provide a couple of benefits for seed germination. It allows the seed to be protected from wildlife like birds from eating all the seed, since it’s hard for them to reach down in the hole. It also helps with seed washing away in a heavy down pour, since the seed in the hole kinda traps it there instead of floating away. It also helps with germination because seed requires soil contact along with moisture etc to sprout. Great video and it seems like an excellent product I’d like to try out.

Thanks for the video. Just put in my first order of RGS and Air8, can't wait to try it out! I hope to do away with aeration completely by implementing Air8. We have such compacted red clay soils in the piedmont that not aerating will only result in seed runoff with the first rain. What you say makes sense though, I've just always been taught to do it "this way." Can Air8 be applied with RGS as a stand-alone app for really stressed/fungus ridden fescue? In temps over 90 if RGS is at 3oz/k?

John.....I can shoot a hole in your theory! I had to seed a helicopter landing pad area last year for a hospital that was only about half grass (due to the constant taking off/landing), the helicopter caused the topsoil to blow out and left behind large areas of bare dirt that wouldn't fill in. I core aerated, and slicer seeded the WHOLE area. By poor timing/bad luck, just as I finished the seeding job, the helicopter came in for a landing before I could water in the seed. Well, 4 weeks later, the only germination was in the core aeration holes...LOL...the rest of the seed got blown out from the helicopter....so there is always that one exception to the rules I guess....LOL. Just a funny story I thought you might enjoy. Side note...in about 3 weeks I plan to do it again this year and hopefully fill in the remaining areas. its all bermuda, so going to run heavy fert this year on it also to help spread it into the bare areas as much as possible. I avoided using pre em in the bare areas,and have already hit the whole property with a shot of RGS and Air-8 and starter fertilizer.

That’s a great story and very true point. Last year I put out a video of natural seeding vs planting and when an aerator or alive seeder would be needed. Basically, if there is coverage of any type, sees can typically be dropped as it is naturally. But is the straw is barren, or needs to be under ground!

So in lieu of skipping mechanical aeration.. what would you recommend to improve seed to soil contact when overseeding to increase germination rates? The concern is some level of "disturbance" is required to the soil to improve seed to soil contact or else you're just feeding the birds. On that note, is annual overseeding even necessary or a good idea in areas with thick turf? Maybe it can be done every other year instead for thick turf and of course spot seeding thinner areas? I gotta say I'm not sure exactly which product is "working," but my soil sure seems to show improvements and less compaction this year over last, with the big change being using the GCF products this year.
@Lawncology
@Lawncology 6 жыл бұрын
Your seed will drop down to a level it can germinate and only requires moisture and “shade” to grow. A seed that falls in natural circumstances has no help getting to the soil yet a plant is born. Now, I don’t know that you “have to” over seed, it’s common due to the summer stress of fescue. Not everyone overseeds, and I don’t have an opinion either way, but typically if you have irrigation and good density... what’s the point of over seeding a perennial grass?

Core aeration is recommended along with overseeding not because the holes encourage germination, but because the best time to perform each is during the growing season, ideally fall but also spring for cool season grass. Golf courses fill aeration holes with sand for a completely different reason than a home owner would. A home owner would fill with soil or compost to incorporate nutrients and OM into the existing soil. On the other hand, golf greens are primarily sand for drainage purposes yes, but mainly to maintain firmness and the slopes of the green through constant foot traffic, mowing etc. because sand does not compact like soil does. Without regular sand topdressing, OM would accumulate and create a soft mushy surface. Golf courses will frequently top dress with sand, not just with aeration either.
@Lawncology

+whatthewhat11 that is absolutely correct. Firmness is your friend, OM buildup in dwarf grasses is not.

I’ve typically thought that an extra bonus of mechanical aeration was to help promote seed-to-soil contact for improved germination rates. Without mechanical aeration, would Dthatch be of any benefit to “expose” more dirt? If so, how long before overseeding would you recommend putting it down?

Hi John. I was at your class during the solutions conference in Tampa. Some questions about the application process. How often do you apply it? Same as a core aeration or more often? I believe you use 6oz per 1000 sq feet but in how much water is it mixed with? Whats the best way to apply it, back pack or spray tank? Can it be mixed with other products such as liquid weed control or Liquid Grub treatments such as nematodes?
@Lawncology

Richard Groen hey Richard, shoot me an email answers@lawncology.com. 1) no limit, 2x is average. 2)6 ounces is standard rate, backpack or spray tank, minimum dilution is 7:1 3) mixes with anything but surfactants. Great to apply with insecticides

Liquid Aeration is a.....wesome! Thanks for the great product John. Was a skeptic before I bought the biostimulant pack. My first year using the products and I've had great results. Will be buying another pack for next year. I have granular for N and K that I will be using. Do you still suggest the bio-pack or another combination? I realize this is probably a "that depends" question.

You said that Humic‘ work best when you combine them with something else. So I shouldn’t apply Humic 12 to my lawn by itself?
@Lawncology

its perfect to apply by itself, it takes on the other input to make them more efficient, but humic does this with soil minerals too.

Just to make sure I understand you correctly, John, are you saying that if you use Air-8 on your lawn as instructed on the bottle's label that mechanical core aeration is unnecessary? Is this true after just the first app or do you need several applications of Air-8 to be equivalent? I, like many other people, will be seeding/overseeding this fall and I am trying to understand what works and not duplicate my efforts. Thanks for your greats videos and advice, John.

Connor Ward still does plug aeration. He has the best yard on KZbin IMO so might be worth giving his channel a look. People frequently come up to him at his residence and ask if his lawn is real. It's become somewhat of a tourist attraction. I like his videos. Very informative.

@@ajmarketer I have seen Connor Ward's channel and yard. While some may think he has a nice yard, I prefer a different look in my yard. Connor cuts his lawn very short (with a reel mower) and does spend a lot of time in his yard. The difference is that he does not use any N-ext products, specifically Air-8, which is what my question to John Perry was about and if using Air-8 would substitute for mechanical aeration.

So let me play devil's advocate, why do golf courses do mechanical aeration then? Why not mix their own humic and kelp really cheap and use that? It would save them a lot of money vs hiring a crew to aerate, and also the high cost of those professional sized aeration machines.

I need your opinion on what I'm using. I've created a concentrate that's 3% humic/fulvic/kelp, along with a 2.5% solution of 70 amino acids, with the addition of enzymes and yucca, for organic maintenance, and drought tolerance. This is a pretty tame solution by percentage, but I apply every seven to ten days. I started this project at the beginning of August, and will continue through November. My grass and soil are showing small signs of improvement after five applications (might be my imagination/wishful thinking). I'm getting ready to over seed next week. Do you really think I don't need to aerated? Thanks for any advice...Greg

@@Lawncology I'm using products that are from a different company. Basically, buy humic/fulvic/kelp, amino acids, and enzymes/yucca in bulk. I find that making my own products connects me better to the process, and it's much less expensive than Green County (no offense). I'm just interested in your opinion, because I'm getting older, and despise getting beat up every fall by the aerator. BTW, your Dial and Spray tutorial was how I found you. Best explanation of the product online. Not here to offend. Just value your opinion.

We’ve actually had this conversation at a few of my events. In a SOLUTION (tank mix) breakdown is possible if left too long. Aside from that, the rate on the the ground is so low, you don’t have the same long term possible breakdown issues. Pros run air8 and pre-m every year.

Nice informative video. I like the bell sound to let me know it’s real. Lol This year I plan to just Air8 and not manually core aerate as I have every Fall for the past 7 years with overseeding. I know the LCN and Pete from GCI Turf still promotes core aeration with Air8. Now, will a combo of both be even more beneficial or will Air8 alone achieve the same results? I always understood manually core aerating created a better seed to soil contact as Air8 can not do but you are saying it’s not needed at all (even for air flow), correct?

Hello, does air8 affect the chemical barrier of pre-emergent?
@Lawncology
@Lawncology 6 жыл бұрын
Dennis Oh well, that’s kind of a misnomer. There isn’t a “barrier” that’s formed, it’s residual chemical that prohibits cell division. The reason we don’t mechanically aerate is that you expose parts of the soil profile where weed seeds can get. So, no effect on preemergent whatsoever with Air8
