And I found that lag was substantial when repairing the buildings at spawn. I wonder if it has something to do with the creative buildings?

It shouldn't be anything to do with the buildings or else everyone would be having trouble, but it might have been caused if someone else was online and exploring a lot (which was my issue I think - someone was traveling fast and loading lots of new chunks very rapidly), or it may have been an issue with your connection or routing issues between you and the server. Ping me on Discord if you keep having issues though, we'll see if we can sort it out!
