Although there are so many things I like and appreciate about the new Astro c40 TR Controller I have to call it like it is. There are simply better ways to spend $200 on an elite controller.

This review breaks my heart. I love you for being honest, but I had set aside my money for this one and I was so sure I was going to love it that I almost preordered. Thankfully I waited. I was in the stream the night you tested it and the stick tension problem was one I had hoped you would be able to solve in the software. I really loved the way this controller looked and the grip and the button placement. I was excited to have an Xbox Elite level controller on the PS4. I want an out of the box solution. Astro did so many things right here and yet they somehow missed on the biggest things. Thank you for this review. Every other review I watched left out the issues you raised. This is just another example of why you are the only one I trust to give it to me straight.

Agreed. As a PC gamer who plays on both controller and keyboard / mouse, it's ridiculous lol... And plus on PC, the C40 is more crippled due to using Xbox drivers causing it to lose touch pad and gyro capabilities. What's even worse is that the thumbstick has a little creak when pushing it slightly in any direction. DS4 is just better.

Love your content bro, but I gotta disagree hard with you on this one. I'll never go back to SCUF or Battle Beaver after using the Astro. The build quality is just too pristine. It WAS a bit different going from 3 paddles to 2, but it wasn't game changing. Just took a bit to get used to. I like having my controller heavy, so that didn't bug me, and I haven't had stick drift. I've had the headset for 4 years and it's still in perfect condition and I have no doubt that the controller and modules will prevail even after heavy use. I've been through 7 custom controllers in the same time frame and I'll never buy another from another company. Quality control man. The only con that I've really had was that I think the L1/R1 buttons are a bit too slim, they should have been a bit bigger, but now that I'm used to it I don't even notice. Anyway, sorry to hear about your experience and keep up the good work

I played well with this controller after a bit of getting used to it. And believe me quality control is my full time job so I hear ya there. But after using 4 inputs and really getting dialed in with it I cannot go back. Also I tried comparing my game play and kd's from after I got used to the Astro and using my Battlebeaver...it was just day and night. I'm much more accurate with increased thumbstick tension. But again 2 paddles, 4 paddles, loose thumbsticks, tight ones, all personal preference. End of the day Astro really does make a killer controller.

Rebuttal to your cons: 1) stick drift, as you said in the video they fixed this at launch with the reset, there’s no way around it, even stock ps4 controllers have a reset for drift. 2) dongle, it’s a pro controller, the dongle ensures if multiple are use at tournaments there will be zero interference. It also ensures pushing out a firmware update that would make it ps5 compatible. 3) tension, this is placebo, sorry but you’re wrong about the stock ps4 controller having more tension than the Astro controller, they use the same mechanisms, you only believe the stock controller has more tension because the stick is so much shorter and lightweight plastic not metal and tall like an Xbox stick. Sure you can add more tension with other companies but then you introduce more drift down the line, use that battle beaver more often, guarantee you’ll start to see drift quick. 4) two buttons, sorry but no one but a very small minority use more than 2 bottom buttons. The people that want 4 are not pros or competitive players, they’re trick shotters and casuals like yourself who simply built that muscle memory of 4. 5) late lifecycle, see the second part to number 2 and the dongle. 6) price, patents ain’t cheap buddy. the magnetic thumbstick patent is micrososft. The swappable modules is patented by madcatz they’re gone but the patent is still owned by the creator. Sony licensing also costs money. The Hair trigger switch patent is owned by Microsoft. The “profiles” patent is also owned by Microsoft. Astro is probably selling this thing at a loss or bare minimum profit.

@@Blu3ManiC if they are selling it to retailers for ~150, they probably only cost 130 to make honestly. Think, the elite controller has the same features for 150. They dont own the patten for hair triggers switches. And ps4 probably paid them to license it for playstation.
@Blu3ManiC
@Blu3ManiC 5 жыл бұрын
UnseenKaution you’re only speculating, wholesale has nothing to do with profit for the manufacturers, and yes Microsoft owns those patents. The hair trigger switch and the way it’s implemented on the elite is exactly how it’s implemented on the Astro. The patent numbers all list Microsoft as the owner even in astros design patent references. Sony doesn’t pay you, you pay Sony to have the “officially licensed” product branding. There’s a reason there was no xbox version to begin with, they’d make no profit paying twice to make both instead of paying once.

@@kaauution Manufacturing cost is way more complicated than you could think. One example: a friend of mine work for a well known local bread shop. Their store is located weirdly and they have tried to minimise unnecessary costs since people are willing to travel far just for them. The average cost each is around $1.5 and they are selling them for $10 to $15 each. They can sell thousands every day but they are struggling to make reasonable profit. Hidden cost that customers don't see is huge.

I always appreciate the honesty in your reviews. What I will say is that A LOT of your dislikes about this controller in particular air on the side of personal preference. I have the controller and love it. Unfortunately personal preference tends to be a major factor in any of the custom controllers. One last point is that the software built into the controller is going to allow firmware updates in a way no other controller that I’ve seen can. The key is in the software. If you spend enough time fine tuning the controller, you can make it feel perfect. An example would be you can adjust the stick acceleration to where you get the same effect as sticks with added tension. As always I appreciate your honest opinion. I think this controller series had helped A LOT of people out. Wish you nothing but the best! 😉

Totally agree. It's all about the Software. The way it's built, the case that comes with it, yes it is all worth $200. If your interested in getting this controller vs any other custom one (AIM, battle beaver, or scuf) here's some comparisons. Wall of text incoming.... CUSTOMIZATIONS BB, scuf and AIM have amazing customizations. They win hands down in aesthetics. However, all that extra stuff costs lots of money. Performance wise, you can do many things with them when you make it online before ordering. You can create a controller that is tailored made for YOU. However once you do, you are locked into that controller format. And can never change your customizations outside of your paddle mapping. Smart triggers, thumbstick tension and all other things can vary based on which game your currently playing. smart triggers are still the most crisp I've used by far, but mostly for feels as it doesn't affect your gameplay too much when compared to the c40 and a hair trigger set up. With the c40, everything is customizable throughout your use of it via the software which is extremely easy to use. Remapping, hair triggers, stick sense and all that good stuff. Offset or parallel layouts are interchangeable. Yes there are some things you cannot change like thumbstick tension. To those wondering, it's slightly less tension than a standard Dualshock controller. The 2 profiles make it seamless to switch between different genre games. Also the ability to change stick sense and trigger sense is like none other Ive seen on the market. This is a tough category to judge but I'll call it a tie because it depends on the gamer. LONGETIVITY Hands down goes to the c40. Here's why. Build quality is top tier, modules such as sticks most importantly can be easily replaced for a reasonable price (around $15-20), and triggers will hold up better over time. The triggers are essentially normal PS triggers with a variable stop you can set physically. However it only stops them about half way. You get your hair trigger setup through the software, which relieves any worries about triggers going bad like on smart triggers. However smart triggers are a tad better IMO. 180 day warranty on the c40 and replaceable modules is a huge win. Not to mention the ability to put out software and firmware updates that work flawlessly and are very easy to do in 2 minutes. With other controllers, customizations are harder to fix because they have to be sent out to be repaired if in warranty. It's just a hassle to deal with. PRICING Ah the controversial category. C40: $200 with pretty much everything you can ask for on a controller, looks aside. It also has better longetivity. Other controllers: strictly necessary customizations for performance and your looking at $155-190 forgoing all aesthetic options. The winner of this category is subjective I suppose. Think about what you are willing to pay for, how long it will last and your maximum budget. ERGONOMICS Mostly subjective as well. But I'll give this to other custom controllers because for the majority of people, holding a controller closest in size and feel to their Xbox or PS4 will be more natural. Also there are usually grips you can choose to add on for additional $. The c40 is the biggest controller by far and it can take some time getting used to. But I also think no grips are needed because the material is fantastic and it has enough grooves to hold a firm grip. This is coming from a person who has hyperhidrosis on my hands and they sweat a lot, especially when gaming. Oh and about the number of paddles, obviously 4 is better than 2 but let's be real here, for fps games at least: it doesn't matter unless youre playing a tournament at the professional level. 2 extra paddles for what face buttons do in fps games aren't that much more useful. My two paddles for apex legends for example are my jumping and swapping weapons cause you do that a lot in the heat of battle. Reloading and melee is whatever. But hey no argue that if you have four and can comfortably use all four, it's definitely better. FINAL THOUGHTS Know yourself as a gamer, which games you like to play and what type of player are you within the games. Choose the controller that will best suit you overall considering those categories. My personal opinion after having battle beavers and scufs and now this astro, the astro wins in my book. I've only had the c40 for a couple weeks and the reason I can confidently speak about it's durability is cause I have experience on what breaks and doesn't break on other controllers. I just cant see the astro failing on me with these replaceable modules and software integrated triggers. Time will tell I guess. The most reasonable reason why I just can't see people choosing the astro is for it's size. Tbh, if it just ain't comfortable to hold then it's just not for you. Btw, battle beaver is the second best if your interested. If you got this far, I hope this helps some of you decide because I know it's a sizable investment spending over $150 for some of these damn controllers. Peace

I'm honesty thinking that since the PS5 will be 100% backwards compatible with PS4 games, the controller even if changed won't be changed much and most likely ps4 controllers will still be compatible with the PS5, I don't see Astro making this mistake, they may have signed a NDA and can't say anything about it but I would almost guarantee they were in direct contact with Sony about this. I much prefer the the C40 to any other custom controller I've used personally. I bet they come out with modules that have different tensions, along with other cool things as well. I love mine personally and that's the great thing about choices, taste is subjective, we're all not going to like the same things.

there is no way ps5 will work with a ps4 controller. Business is business boys. Do you really think they care that you bought a elite controller for ps4 right before Sony launched their next flagship console? or that you bought a dual-shock 4 stock for your Playstation 4 before the dual-shock 5 launched for Playstation 5? I’m not trying to be an asshole by no means just thinking logically. You could buy a cronus max for the next gen when someone figures out how to do it and use any controller on that console.

Bro, AWESOME vidz as always! Thanks for making is video. I recently bought this C40 a couple of weeks ago and it took me a couple of days to get used to it. The build quality of this controller is awesome. After adjusting the two thumbstick sensitivity to 60/60/100/100/100 it is comparable/maybe even better than my Scuff 4PS. The 2 vs 4 back paddles doesn't bother me so much since I don't really need more than two and watching reviews for controllers with 4+ back (& side) paddles the inner two are usually a pain to reach during gameplay (not very ergonomic same thing with the side paddles). So far I prefer this to Scuffs newer controllers. Thanks again and keep the reviews coming!

I respect the review even though I'm loving everything about the Astro C40 TR Controller. I saw a video of why they decided to have a Dongle for the controller & why you couldn't turn the PS4 on & off. Their reasons for why is to have the audio build in the controller to be near 1 to 1 of their Audio Products & for the controller as much little latency when using it. They wanted you to feel like the response time is as fast as if it was wired. Which from testing the product for 2 weeks now, I don't feel much of a difference from wireless & wired. So to me it was worth the trade off for having a dongle & not being able to turn the PS4 on & off.
@alexbrown723
@alexbrown723 4 жыл бұрын
The dongle is there because Logitech who makes the wireless connection wasn’t satisfied with Sony’s stock Bluetooth so they made one with the standards of their specs. That’s why it has a dongle. It’s better than Sony’s wireless according to other reviews.

I had played with an FPS Strikepack for about 2 months when I decided to go try out a Scuf. Bought the Vantage. Loved having 4 back paddles and 2 extra shoulder buttons, but had all kinds of connectivity issues, even after resetting and updating twice. Also scuf trigger stops were cheap, and setting hair trigger didn't really make any difference. I traded it back in to GameStop after 2 weeks for the C40. Even after swapping modules twice, I encountered no drift, response time is fantastic, and the dongle is so you can play it on PC as well. I disagree about thumbstick tension as well, and even put the longer thumbsticks on. Performance is outstanding. I DO wish it had the 4 paddles, but I personally think C40 is the test bed controller, and a new model will come out with 4-6 extra buttons /paddles. Also, PS4 may only have a year, but this can easily be fixed with firmware update, or, thanks to that dongle, it might be compatible with future PS, and it'll stay compatible with PC.

*Don't get this controller!* The astro C40 is a great overall controller and has a lot of perks that make it a great option for a elite controller. But ironically its main selling point, the swappable stick modules are the cause for its biggest problems. After a couple of months the sticks start to gain a lot of stick drift making it almost impossible to play competitive FPS titles. The reset/reprogram button won't fix it and you're going to be forced to order a replacement part from Astro. Which will work for a while...until it goes haywire like the last one. I bet if the sticks were directly built into the controller this wouldn't happen but unfortunately that conflicts with the main feature of the C40s.

If more stick tension is something you want, Evil Controllers and Battle Beaver both sell custom modules with added tension. As well as the Astro software let's you tune your right stick sensitivity down to compensate for a looser stick. And it works. If you want a module they come in 80G, 120G and 200G I believe. I believe the stock one's are 60Gs of tension. For FPS's it's so so nice to add more tension to your right thumb stick

Had the same experience. 2 paddles is the major dealbreaker. I assume that they could release higher tension modules for the thumbsticks, but I have no idea why they went with only 2 paddles...

I think Astro merely played it safe on this controller, namely on having 2 remap buttons as opposed to 4, to avoid major bugs or problems. Mind you, this is their first dive into the pro controller circuit, they're known extensively for being a gaming headset provider and top notch one at that. I myself use and adore their headsets (admittedly, I use the A10's due to my budget, but they are still better than anything I've used before), so I don't see them wanting to taint their reputation for sending out a clearly inferior/terrible product. I think they wanted to test what they could do for now and dive into the next time, fully assured they could deliver. My girlfriend ordered me one as a gift and I'm hopeful it meets up to my expectations and I appreciate your reviews, they're unbiased, honest and thorough (sad to say, is incredibly hard to find anymore) and I hope to see this channel grow and become the golden standard for other gaming channels.

Great video. I play mostly on Xbox and Use the Razer Wolverine Ultimate (4 paddles, 2 extra buttons) and the Elite(4 paddles always) I use a stock controller on PS4 with 2 xtra paddles. Hard for me to invest in this Astro product with only 2 paddles when I’m looking at investing in 2 new consoles Christmas 2020. Thx. Great honest review.

After watching all your "Elite" gaming controller reviews I have come to the conclusion that all elite gaming controllers apparently suck ass and I'll stick with my Dualshock 4 controllers which I've had for 6 years since I got the Destiny 1 bundle LOL

Great, honest review!! Good product but not for your preference of play. Four paddles isn’t a deal breaker for me and I’m hoping Astro will release modules with different tension rates after seeing this. Excellent job sir.

Next gen consoles ( ps5) should have 4 back buttons(paddles) as extra inputs not as remaps of other buttons. About time don't you think 🤔

Thanks for the honest review, I agree having only 2 buttons instead of 4 is a deal breaker, but hey at least the controller looks cool though

I came from 4 paddles to 2 on this one. The software is the main reason why this controller beats the rest out of the water. & when you feel it in youe hands, it feels like an expensive product that it is.

Just wanted to say I believe I read an article a year or so back claiming that Sony does not and will not let any 3rd party controller turn on their console. So it's not they did not want to, it's that Sony doesn't allow it. I believe that's what an article I read said, I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure. Anyway awesome vid!

i'm sure about other 69 people already wrote this but if you actually have stick drift and you can prove it or something Astro will send you another separated module thumbstick. Now this is where the interesting part comes: if you buy/get another separated module thumbstick whatsoever, you can buy it or ask it you have stick drift eccetera, you can choose if you prefer to have another thumbstick tension, wich will be a little bit harder and will help you with your aim. I person think this is overall quite interesting because let's say you completely hate the C40 due to the too loose thumbstick, you don't have to buy a completely new elite controller that has an in built specific thumbstick tension but you can actually swap between the different thumbsticks and of course get different tensions. I mean if that's not a good service i don't know what is

Hey @AIR BEAR the dongle was needed to ensure sub 5ms response time in wireless mode. It's actually faster than the DS4's bluetooth wireless connection. That being said, using the dongle doesn't allow the controller to turn on the console via bluetooth.

Absolutely agree with you with this controller not having at least 4 remappable buttons. Like having 2 sure is better than nothing, but you would still have to move your right thumb off the R stick to press the other 2 face buttons. But if they had 4 remappable buttons, all 4 face buttons could of been remapped where I wouldn't have to move my right thumb a single time. That is why I didn't pick up this controller. I wanted it mainly for the changeable module feature but since it has 2 remappable buttons, I changed my mind instantly.

Wow! This controller is just for me! I have now 4-pedals, but I'm using only 2 of it. And I hate thumbstick tensions, so I probably buy astro c40.
