AIRBNB vs CAMPERVAN: Devon Showdown

Hi everyone. Normally a series would grow the channel but this one shrank it by over 200 subscribers. 🤔 This is the LAST episode from Devon so if you are not a subscriber and you like us it would be great if you would hit that subscribe button to help get us back to where we were. 👍 It’s been interesting doing these daily videos. A heck of a lot of work but enjoyable. Thanks for all of your likes and comments. Producing a 20 minute video is much harder than doing a 10 minute one. At 10 minutes I might be able to keep production going in the van rather than facing a daunting pile of clips at the end of the trip. This might keep us more current. Not tried it yet so I don’t know. From the comments a few people seemed to be under the impression that we have given up vanlife forever. As you can see in our chat at the end we have not and it will resume in late January with the new van.

If people really like your channel, they would not unsubscribe. Maybe somehow they got unsubscribed? Heard from other content creators that they have the problem and you did as well a while ago. I enjoyed this series, it was something different and I don't stay, because of the van. I watch you, because of you 😊

I am shocked that people unsubscribed over one of numerous trips. You aren’t out doing something illegal or unethical, you are not making political comments, you have explained at the beginning of each video that this is an experiment. A short attention span has evolved into an art vs a challenge to overcome? I mean no insult to anyone but I am more surprised by this than finding out that you are Connor MacLeod (before anyone runs to the papers with that information, it is a funny joke that I would like to keep running and not a scoop so the Daily Mail and the National Enquirer and any other gossip rag neé fiction writer needs to find another target unless Ken should say otherwise)!

I have been busy with friends and relatives, just now starting to catch up. I like the people in the videos channels I follow, so it doesn’t matter much to me what they do. I may have started following because of the van, but only stay because of you two. I click on lots of potentials, but if the people are irritating or keep drawing politics religion or sex into it, I drop them.

I, too, have heard from other creators that their subscribers are reporting that they were “unsubscribed” mysteriously. I wonder if that happens if a channel is not watched on a regular basis. People are so busy this time of year. I have not found myself unsubscribed, however, I stop getting notifications. I regularly check my favorite channels to make sure I’m subscribed and as one creator advised, I turn off notifications and turn them back on. I enjoy your channel for the little red camper, but also for the sightseeing so it didn’t matter that you were at bnbs. The countrysides you visit are so beautiful and I love that you give us the history of those places. Never say never, but I don’t expect to be able to visit the places you take us to at this season of my life so I treasure your narratives. Wishing you both a Happy, Healthy & Prosperous 2024. I’m looking forward to new adventures in the new camper van, as well.

The whole appeal for me is that you are out in the little red campervan and going here and there around the country. I am vicariously driving along with you and enjoying the trip I can't actually take. I'm a newly self-taught artist and 65 years of age is just a stone's throw away. I don't need any of the drama, so the calm narrative is just perfect. When I get used to the way a channel works, I tend to be spoiled for it and don't take well to changes. Not fair on my part, I suppose. I used to watch a true crime channel and it just got to be too much. Thanks for all you do. You are an inspiration to follow one's heart and also an example of a devoted lasting relationship.

I've really enjoyed this series, the scenery and your activities have been great. Although i too missed the Little Red Camper, I do think it's important to mix up experience. If we were to book an Airbnb we would probably still use our campervan as a day vehicle. The advantage of a campervan as a day vehicle is flexibility, as you know. Looking forward to seeing you on your collection day for your new Consort campervan, it will be such fun stocking it up with all of your stuff, finding out the idiosyncrasies and how to stop any rattling in bigger cupboards!! Lovely places. The steam engine gave me a twinge of nostalgia. I love them. My family used the sleeper trains in South Africa to Rhodesia in my youth . The trip took 4 days, electric from Durban to Johannesburg, steam from Johannesburg to Plumtree, and at Bulawayo we hopped to diesel locomotives. If we went to Umtali it was a rail car. Wonderful way to see the countryside. ❤️happy new year.

I must admit that I prefer fewer and longer episodes, but I enjoyed the Devon series. It didn’t really matter to me that you were in BnBs instead of Little Red, although it was interesting to hear you compare the two. Having driven some of those roads in southern England in a rental car, I’m very interested to see how you get along in what we Americans would consider a small rv. Hope it doesn’t keep you out of too many of the quaint little villages.

Lovely video in the train so sad we have lost These lovely branch lines. I think I didn't look to the future and should have kept some going. I think this is why there's so much traffic on the roads. I've enjoyed the series. Can't comment on Van holidays as don't have a van, but I agree with you that the great thing about Airbnb compared to a hotel is the privacy from others. There's also flexibility over catering, many hotels finish serving breakfast too early for me. If you don't feel like cooking, there's always the option to find a cafe or order a takeaway.

This is a good summary. You are right in that once you return to an Airbnb or back home, you don’t want to go back out again. I have always wanted an apartment over a boutique or similar in a fun part of town and until you articulated this, I never knew why except for the convenience. Hearing this out loud helps me realize that this is all that is. A reason to get back out again. But, the truth is that I am not a shopper and you can only have so much “stuff” which is currently holding me prisoner. Also, at 65, the stairs would get old very quickly and even going out twice a day to eat a meal would get old and I would not wander after to stairs became a problem. I have learned a lot from this video and I think you have saved me a whole lot of money. Thank you!!!

Lots of Tubers are. It’s clear there is a natural progression. I can see why they do it. If YT is your only source of income then they have to keep going bigger and bigger. That little railway and the Flying Scotsman was the reason for our last trip to Somerset and north North Devon in 2019. My wife had always wanted to ride on the Flying Scotsman so I bought tickets for the return trip from Minehead to where the branch line meets up with the mainline and while we were staying we took a day out to Lynmouth but I didn't tell her she was going to be stopping short until I drove into the carpark. I got tickets and paid an extra £25 for hers to ride on the footplate and be able to drive the engine. She had always loved Steam Trains and everywhere we had been over the years I had arranged for Heritage Railway trips except for our own local one just North of Cheltenham. We went in September and by the end of October she'd gone so I hope they have Steam Trains where she's gone. They did say that they hoped to extend that little line back as far as Blackmore gate but I guess Covid and funds has so far stopped that from happening. Just to help put your minds at rest the bigger van your going for is not so much a problem on West country roads as far as fit is concerned as that journeys always take about 50% longer because you can't zip about so much. And of course you already know that in the popular spots it probably won't fit under the perishing height barriers. The worst area I found was Yorkshire. We tried unsuccessfully to visit Goathland and also the resorts on the east coast of the county. You can't get in the public carparks and they won't let you in the Lorry and Coach ones. We gave up after three days and came home. 🙄 Glad you enjoyed your Air BnB stays. I was always inclined to use Premier Inns and Travelodges when it taking the van. I'm definitely grateful for the information though as they weren't really a thing until comparatively recently so I've no experience of them. Doesn't seem to be much change in this new year of 2024, it's still piddling down in Glawstersher. 🤣🐻

I have always been the Cook and was never at a loss with household chores. So as an old chap I used to meet in a local cafe used to say " life goes on matey". 😬 Hope you enjoy your walk, I'm off for a bit of shopping and a Coffee. Not blowing a hoolie at the moment but we're getting plenty of rain. 🤣

Hi Carol and Ken, I was wondering if you could give me some advice. We have had our transporter van for 15 months now. we have all facilities cooker oven fridge etc. However, in the last couple of weeks I have woken up very claustrophobic and had to stick my head out the side window for air the van is standard 2m high. Unfortunately the pop up roof side scissors broke and I’ve were not able to use it. I was wondering if either of you have had a feeling of claustrophobia in your little red camper-van at all and if that was one of the reasons you decided to change to a higher rooftop. We like you find the 2m height very handy for parking, we would appreciate any comments. keep up the good work we love the content Carmel

Seems strange you should loose 200 subscriber's?? However I have heard other content creators observe strange occurrences with viewing figures and subscription numbers. There is something strange happening from time to time and what can you do about it?? I personally thought the series was brilliant and interesting. EVT as usual. Cheers for now. ❤😊

We did Anglesey in 2022 , we had some nights in a Premier travelodge in Holyhead instead of our van, we used our little car when touring round the Anglesey coasts we missed it for chilling out and having tea coffee and food on hand it just made it different experience , boring i would say to be honest but very different when your used to the convenience of the van , & your home being with you 🚌...☕️🫖🍔
