The engines on the A340-200/300s are CFM56's, they develop about 34,000lbs/thrust each. They're a slightly uprated version of what is used on the Boeing 737NGs. The A350-500/600s use the RR Trents

@KimmurielBaenre those engines are CFM56-5C..also uprated engines from the A320 series.. FM56-5B series[edit] Front view of an A319-112 CFM56-5B6 with its fan removed An improvement of the CFM56-5A series, it was originally designed to power the A321. With a thrust range between 22,000 and 33,000 lbf (98 kN and 147 kN) it can power every model in the A320 family (A318/A319/A320/A321) and has superseded the CFM56-5A series. Among the changes from the CFM56-5A is the option of a double-annular combustor that reduces emissions (particularly NOx), a new fan in a longer fan case, and a new low-pressure compressor with a fourth stage (up from three in earlier variants). It is the most numerous engine supplied to Airbus.[43][53] Model Thrust Bypass ratio Pressure ratio Dry weight Applications CFM56-5B1 30,000 lbf (130 kN) 5.5 35.4 5,250 lb (2,380 kg) Airbus A321 CFM56-5B2 31,000 lbf (140 kN) 5.5 35.4 5,250 lb (2,380 kg) Airbus A321 CFM56-5B3 33,000 lbf (150 kN) 5.4 35.5 5,250 lb (2,380 kg) Airbus A321 CFM56-5B4 27,000 lbf (120 kN) 5.7 32.6 5,250 lb (2,380 kg) Airbus A320 CFM56-5B5 22,000 lbf (98 kN) 6.0 32.6 5,250 lb (2,380 kg) Airbus A319 CFM56-5B6 23,500 lbf (100 kN) 5.9 32.6 5,250 lb (2,380 kg) Airbus A319 CFM56-5B7 27,000 lbf (120 kN) 5.7 35.5 5,250 lb (2,380 kg) Airbus A319, A319CJ CFM56-5B8 21,600 lbf (96 kN) 6.0 32.6 5,250 lb (2,380 kg) Airbus A318 CFM56-5B9 23,300 lbf (100 kN) 5.9 32.6 5,250 lb (2,380 kg) Airbus A318 CFM56-5C series[edit] Four CFM56-5C installed on an Airbus A340-300 With a thrust rating of between 31,200 and 34,000 lbf (139 kN and 151 kN), the CFM56-5C series is the most powerful of the CFM56 family. It powers Airbus' long-range A340-200 and -300 airliners, and entered service in 1993. The major changes are a larger fan, a fifth low-pressure turbine stage, and the same four-stage low-pressure compressor found in the -5B variant.[54] Unlike every other variant of the CFM56, the -5C features a mixed-exhaust nozzle,[nb 1] which offers slightly higher efficiency.[40] Model Thrust Bypass ratio Pressure ratio Dry weight Applications CFM56-5C2 31,200 lbf (139 kN) 6.6 37.4 8,796 lb (3,990 kg) Airbus A340-200/-300 CFM56-5C3 32,500 lbf (145 kN) 6.5 37.4 8,796 lb (3,990 kg) Airbus A340-200/-300 CFM56-5C4 34,000 lbf (151 kN) 6.4 38.3 8,796 lb (3,990 kg) Airbus A340-200/-300 and with a differen engine cowling.. so in short. its the same as on an A321... or A320 series.. but slightly bumped up in thrust.. and different engine cowlings en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CFM_International_CFM56#CFM56-5_series

As N1 (the low-pressure spool at the front of the engine) increases the blade tips approach transonic speed, causing the change in pitch you're noticing.

usually for speed and noise restrictions. plus, full power is not needed as the plane gets higher in altitude. throttle down usually occurs as the flaps are retracted to flaps 5.

That hum of the A343 is what is so unique that sets it apart from a B744.. I love how the A343 PURRS AND GROANS as it gets airborne! So what if it may be slightly underpowered.. man do those engines sound awesome. Besides, why do you want to get in the air in a hurry.. that just means its quicker to your landing.. lol *thumb down* so what if the A343 takes forever to get to altitude? I love that.. haha at least your on a plane :D *smiles*

Are the engines really that loud while taking off? I flew to NYC 2 weeks ago with an A340-500 (Emirates) and the plane was so quiet while taking off, I could´nt believe it! And we had seats right beside the engines!
@dancetahitian15 жыл бұрын
There are a few that are bigger than the 340-300 - 777-300, 777-200, 340-600, 340-500. The 330-300 is basically the same size although it has two engines and less range. Even though the 777-300ER has only two engines, ONE of its engines has about the same thrust (115,000 lbs) as ALL FOUR of the 340-300 engines (31,000 each).

@petrhsr i have never heard about an accident involving the A340-300 because of these engines!So, what is the problem with them? If they were ``underpowered``, this airplane would never take off
@FrisoLustig15 жыл бұрын
in the beginning, the a340s outsolde the 777s. Reason: etops was limited to 120 minutes.The a340 allowed airliners thus to fly much further as 4 engines are not as restricted as twin engines were. Now, with etops 180 minutes, (nearyy) all twins are more economical than the four-holers.
@dave4shmups14 жыл бұрын
@petrhsr I haven't exactly noticed fully-loaded 777's rocketing into the sky. These airplanes are excellent; if they were underpowered then why would airlines operate them, given safety concerns??

Why does the A340 have 4 engines? The A340-300 is considerably smaller than all the other 4 engine planes. Are the 4 engines just to cover a longer distance, or it has another cause?
@herriho16 жыл бұрын
loving the sound of these CFM's....rooaar =) btw, for those, who think that these engines are RR, just look for example the video: Thai Airways Airbus A340-600 Takeoff. a340-200 & a340-300 = CFM a340-500 & a340-600 = RR ;-)

@KimmurielBaenre15 жыл бұрын
What type of engines are those? They look somewhat small for such a large aircraft or is that an optical illusion?
@ChrisCooper31217 жыл бұрын
No, the 340-300 has CFM56s, same as on the A320 series and 737s, although oviously the 340 has 4 whereas the others only have 2. The 340-500s and 600s have Rolls Royce Trents. The CFM56s do sound similar to Rolls Royce RB211s and Trents though.

Well noted. Its because they are the same engines. Pratt and Whitney screwed the Superfan program, designed for the A340, then Airbus had to switch to the CFM-56 which also does power the A320 and 737.
