Loved this from start to finish. In the previous 160th chopper pilot interview (Steve Lapping) I commented that I wanted to hear more technical info on the various aircraft he'd piloted. Explanation to the load outs and performance and mission roles, gently more technical but oh still keeping it so interesting... this latest podcast contained EXACTLY the right amount of that! It was excellent. 10/10. His time on the tools before grabbing the stick are why he can manage to translate the geeky stuff for us and make it understandable and entertaining. Bravo.

I've read both "Not a Good Day to Die" and also "Alone at Dawn "!! Alan Mack is a true American hero. The fact two of his "customers" would be awarded The Congressional Metal of Honor says it best...they wouldn't have gotten the opportunity if it weren't for this American Hero delivering them.

Mr. Mack has that CW4 look from my experience in the Army. I have gotten a lot of rides in Kuwait & Iraq in the Blackhawk & Chinook. His demeanor his look and the way he has his ball cap is classic. He even seems very down to earth and approachable

@TKE644 That the seal team failed them. On several fronts. Along with the command. They failed to do the basics and then realized that they were in over their head. As a special ope team they didn't uphold the standard that is expected. As a leader, I understand not wanting to lose more men, but as a Ranger, we have would either gotten him or all died that morning. It's bred into us since our beginning. You do not leave a fallen comrade, under any circumstances. And this is not me being a armchair quarterback, this is my professional opinion.

@Truman Miller 1st batt did more than all the other units combined and lost 3 men in the process.It's absolutely disgusting. They will have to live with it the rest of their lives. You can watch any interview with the seals, and see the guilt and regret on their faces.

Great interview. I was in flight school the same time as Alan, also in the CH-47 AQC class after his. He went to Savannah, I went to Campbell. We both ended up at King Fahd in Saudi. Both in Afghanisntan many times. Have so many mutual friends in the Chinook community I'm sure our paths crossed at some point. The book is a must read, I couldn't put it down. Thanks for not only sharing the good but also the bad and letting people know it's OK to ask for help.

I read Roberts Ridge when I was a lot younger and it was wild to see the story put in a Medal Of Honor game when I was a little older and all this time later actually hear it from the guy flying there when I’m an adult. Truly awesome interview and we are lucky to be have this so accessible.

Ryan, this brought back memories of FOB Salerno. I got a little over 200hrs of flight time in 47s that year. I loved flying in Chinooks doing the ring route and insertion missions. We even flew over Takur Ghar a couple of times. I got to see more of the AO on that deployment than any other. Lots of good memories with some good folks! Great interview! ENM

But I've got to say this man I always loved it when those black Chinooks would be on Airfield cuz you knew you were flying with. Did a bunch of good training with them up at Fort Campbell as well just amazing amazing Pilots. They can put those things anywhere they want to. Riveting interview. That's the most comprehensive perspective of the Takar Gar/ Robert's Ridge events I've heard. Coming-from a 160th pilot that was central to the events, it was a different view. Not sure how/if he was honored - Citation wise - but did some heroic stuff. God Bless him

This is awesome. Roberts Ridge has been told almost exclusively by the Operators and Rangers on the ground, but we never really got to hear the POV from the 160th pilots and crew that supported these operations. Everyone wants to be a sexy, gunfighter but without the 160th, they don’t have a job

These pilots can identify a small 1 story house in a urban community of thousands of other houses, “at night” land on the roof while taking fire and repeat the process 12 times a night. This was just a typical nights work in Iraq 2005-08. That capability in direct action and hostage rescue mission sets is monumental beyond comprehension, and there’s only a few rotary wing pilots in the world that can do that.

I think i went to air assualt school with the seal guy turned 160th warrant officer. If he went to aaslt school at Campbell around the 1999 timeframe then that was probably him. Everyone in the class was confused why an army WO had a budweiser patch on his bdu's. He wasnt a big guy and didnt look like the prototypical teams guy, he was pretty short, kinda stocky, looked like a lawyer. But he deff seemed like a sharp guy. Very cool.

This was by far the best interview. Being from NH myself, I did my share of bumper hitching back in the day. I’ve throughly been enthralled with these interviews. What these men and women have done is amazing. Having been deployed to the Middle East 3x doing convoy security, I never experienced any combat. Either something happened right before or right after I went through the area. Even though I thankfully never experienced combat, a part of me wish I did. Especially since I started my career as an infantryman. Keep up the good work Ryan.

We called it 'Hooky Bobbing" back in Montana. It was a common practice along with sledding. I'm not sure kids do it much anymore because of modern car bumpers.

I was the gunner hanging on by the tether. I was contracting with the CIA and suited up with everyone taking the gunners position so those boys could roll off doing their thing. Mack is a beast for real. The guy with the oil was cool as cucumbers and saved our lives. John Chapman is the realest warrior I’ve ever met. A lot of people don’t realize what requirements are expected of Air Force Controllers. Slabinski is a piece of trash. RIP, John, Jason, Neil and everyone else who unfortunately sacrificed all in some of the most congested instances of heroism demonstrated by a force of men truly rare in this world. I spent a year in Baghdad doing tier one personal security escorts, Security at the Iraq vs Hussein trial, a month on a JSOC compound still a secret to the world, counter terrorism training and SPIT training, operation together forward, took down the Wolf Brigade, Billions over a Baghdad, and on and on, yet it was nothing to those days at Takur Gahr. The gunships firing on friendlies wasn’t an easy watch either.

This is an exquisite interview and I love that you’re doing the interviews face forward now and showing images of the different birds he’s referring too, it just makes the channel top notch. I have a. friend who’s a green beret and has done some pretty amazing things named Greg Garmut, it would be incredible if you could get his story. He had a really rough childhood and then went into the Rangers then went to Panama, Kosovo, and a bunch of fascinating ops. I love this channel. I’d love to learn about some of the special companies during WWII, our grandfather was in some unit that was highly secretive and we’ve still struggled to uncover what he did. Kenneth Narrod.

Bumper hitching was a WI thing back in the 70s and 80s as well. I had a good laugh when I listened - I haven't thought about that in decades! Hitched a ride in Chinooks at Campell, loved it! The weirdest thing I saw slung by a Chinook was the remnants of a Russian helicopter flying over Cobra a few days after the ground war finished.

Bout 96 dad bought me a 91 s10 Durango 4x4 4.3 and one thing I’ll never forget is 8 of us piled in 12/1oclock at night snow flyin and 5 of em in the bed 1 braved a cut piece of trampoline padding as a snowboard and started surfing of the tailgate…went great till he worked his way up to my drivers side window bout 30/40mph and found a seam….we had went to a strip mine to sled off 800’ reclaimed highwalls….after I done a test run on a smaller one and nearly died we drove to the 1 we called high knob from 4 wheelin and stared up like…ain’t no way….guaranteed if you stayed on you’d probably break 100mph but morn likely wreck beforehand if you were lucky…wish I’d took a path to nighstalkers,ranger reg..love all you men

The voice in the Hornet was Leslie Shook. Long time employee at McDonnell/Douglas then Boeing (after the collision, er, merger with Boeing). She is awesome, real nice lady and that voice is very unique and recognizable in the hallways where she worked.

A Mack is a legend of a pilot dude. You should hear how other pilots talk about him. Matter of fact I was watching another podcast and the guy kept saying A Mack this, A Mack lol. Like how he would fly pedal to the medal lead aircraft into the clouds at night climbing over a mountain range with who knows how many helicopters behind him trying to follow him and stay in formation 😂. So when I seen you did a podcast with him him I had to listen to immediately 😊. Good stuff man, good episode.

My stick buddy from flight school ended up in the 160th flying the MH-47. CW3 John Quinlan was his name. He was a great guy. One of the best men I have known. He was killed in Afghanistan in 2007. My family and I were devastated when we heard the news.

I thankfully don't remember ever having 90 of us on one of those things but I damn sure remember having more than 30 and it sucked. I was a crew chief on mh53’s for several years at hc4 47 can seat belt 30 we had 55 and about lil over 125 squeezed in and I miss it so much
