Aircraft Sealant

For students of BCIT's Sea Island campus, AME - M program requirements call for a familiarization of sealing compounds used in industry. Apprentices must learn to accurately mix and apply sealant, and identify the types of sealant from part numbers. Check www.mlevel3.com for more information.

We tend to use mixing cups and stir sticks (usually plastic scrapers or similar). Best way I've found to apply it has been to take a plastic bag and turn it inside out over your hand. Scoop the sealant out, then turn the bag right side out again. Squeeze it into the corner of the bag and snip off the corner. Apply like cake icing then smooth with a finger. We use window cleaner or something to help prevent it from sticking to your fingers.

You dont want to use your fingers to smooth out the sealant. It is carconogetic.

Aircraft sealant has the unintended effect of plugging up the body of the cleco, and can prevent the spring inside from compressing or releasing. The same could be said with clecos used on an adhesive bond structure. Once the cleco is disabled, many shops will discard the cleco due to its low replacement cost, but individuals may try to clean the skin pegs with a solvent like MEK, clorethylene or acetone. The standard cautions for handling chemicals apply.

Plastic media blasting might also work. It's the preferred method of paint removal.

Yes, good point. Many techs will use barrier cream on their hands, or latex gloves.

For descriptions of the hazards, you have to check the MSDS for the exact product that you're using. No single blanket answer will cover all different brands, all types.

You want to remove it before the seal drys, Paper tape dries out fast and vinyl tape ( if stretched out ) returns to its original shape over time

Completely skipped during WWII. One of the biggest mistakes they made, particularly with Naval aircraft.
