I got two questions ...was the ignition key in Michaels pocket ? Lol And do you know somewhere i can get a little plastic fan , copy built in metal or aluminum ? Its a low speed hydro fan mounted to a driveshaft of a 2020 kubuta 26 hp bx2680 , it cools the hydro pump , vibration and balance not as important as that high speed thing ..

Believe it or not Aircraft NDT was the career I wanted to pursue when I was 13. I really had an interest in NDT. And I always used to dream of climbing into engine to carry out an NDT inspection on a 747. I was one weird kid at that time. Still find NDT fascinating and I'm now an aircraft mechanic.

Page 564, Turbine Engine Maintenance, general procedure. The technician will use the Henkel Torso Method to restrain fanblade autorotation while conducting inspection. This is the more improved method which replaced the Foster Boot method, after incident in 1974 in O'Hare, that cost the technician his big toe.

@@Sool101 That’s what I was wondering. For context I work at a facility (waaay different situation here, I acknowledge that) where we have to stop fan blades from windmilling. We had to install engineered braking systems, the project costed hundreds of thousands of dollars, to keep people from trying to do what the person in the video was doing either with their body or with an object they’re holding because of the personal injury risk. The commenter (Badis) seemed to have some technical knowledge so I asked the questions you see above to see if they knew about options the aviation industry uses for a similar scenario.

I used a red dye penetrant spray followed by another white spray that made it appear frozen. Any porosity or cracks would show up red on the milled end of large gas pipes and if there was, the pipe was sent back to be re-milled. This was back in the late 90s working as a final inspector at Stelpipe.

The bird who passed away was honorable, and a staple to his community. He helped other birds with efficient travel, was working to become educated in college, with a focus on navigational engineering. In the course of that education, he enabled humans to provide repairs in the name of passenger safety to some of the largest aircraft in the skies today, so that they can also circumnavigate the globe in unison. The bird just happened to be confused that day. We will never forget!

You guys doing good work, making sure or air planes are safe. A cracked fan blade could cause a catastrophic failure during flight. If the blade comes apart, the pieces could slice right through the wing or fuselage & also cause an imbalance that could cause a vibration that can literally rip the engine right off the wing, which could also cause catastrophic wing damage. I work in the non destructive testing field as well. This is a penetrant testing technique, the fluorescent penetrant seeps in any cracks and the white stuff he sprays after is called the developer which basically dries to a powder and will pull the penetrant out exposing any cracks.

A lady died from a cracked engine blade in 2018 on a southwest flight. The blade punctured her window and struck her, she got sucked partially out and there is a trail of blood on the passenger windows behind her in the photos. Passengers in the plane also had blood spray at them when someone pulled her back in. This inspection is so important and I believe they use devices as well to inspect.

We did replace that blade and the opposite 180 degree blade for weight and balance. Feeling the spinner while rotating slowly is a common way to find a problem in the bearings and planetary gearset driving the fan. Regardless, the fan assembly should be replaced and inspected for hidden damage.

Been working in the industry for over 30 years and never heard of this common way. Biggest load of crap I have ever heard. There are no planetary gears in a B747 gas turbine engine N1 shaft. It’s very simple, it’s got a fan and maybe some booster stages depending on the model, these are joined to a shaft goes through the centre of the engine and it joins onto the turbine at the rear. Got your engines mixed up buddy 😂 Why replace the fan, observe the limits in the Aircraft Maintenance Manual - that is the book to follow, not some made up self belief

If within limits per the MM, it looks like a posible blade blend. If not you will probably be replacing a pair of blades. As long as the other blades are ok.

I’m a welder that builds liquefied natural gas heat exchangers and we have to Dye Penetrant Test our aluminum welds. The ones that we don’t dye get x-ray. The dye we use is red and when you spray the developer on it you basically don’t want anything red to show up. If you do have any indications they need to be fixed before re dying it and calling QC over to inspect your work.

It kinda was. 25 year airline mechanic here. Those are PW4000 blades, 38 in an engine. We don't test for cracks in fan blades that way anymore. That was very rudimentary! Ultrasonic/Eddy Current is what's recommended. This must have been signed off "in the field" and was the only thing available.
