Aire & Calder Canal MATCH FISHING Mirfield AC Spring League 2022

This week I'm back on the Aire & Calder Canal match fishing in round 4 of the Mirfield AC spring league.
Tactics would be the usual feeder fishing for skimmers and bream and the pole fishing for roach and perch.
How would it go? All is revealed in my latest canal match fishing video.

Commenting on this very late, but great bream. Big males (note the tubercules on its head) can fight like tench, especially around spawning time.

Use to live in mirfield. in 70s when the water was red dye colour and full of soap bubbles. A bit different now I see looking from my home in devon

I'd have said it was a big eel tench or carp if i'd lost it Des - anybody who thinks bream don't fight hasn't caught one ready to spawn, that was one very fit fish!

Jeremy Wade River Monsters yes! I thought it was a canal monster, but no, it was just a frisky bream! Absolutely insane fight - I think I got the Trent barbel in faster last year at Fiskerton. Glad you enjoyed it, more to come from the canal before the rivers open again🎣

There's a lot of pegs that just don't fish in these matches although I do seem to have had more than my fair share of hard sections, will keep going, I know I'm not doing anything wrong.

john you can only try if fish arnt there you can only fish far line with loads of feed to try and draw em in, dont you believe in hemp and caster for bream brill bait at mexboro canal?

Hi John, I wouldn't really consider loose feeding hemp and caster for bream, I'd consider that roach feed, well the hemp anyway, obviously if a bream came over it then that's a bonus but there's been no roach at all worth fishing for. If it works for you though then stick with it 👍

Any big weights come out of aire and calder. Im walking it and taking advice for spring and feel its a bream water. Need to find the stretches where the bream shoals are

Yes 100+ lb weights, for pleasure anglers. The bream in my opinion are nomadic so they migrate the length of the canal and in and out of Southfield reservoir. They'll be heading there around the end of March. In matches you can be 1 peg away from a guy emptying it...end pegs often fish best as the fish get walked up the canal but it's a different matter for pleasure anglers. It's a long canal but you get to know which parts fish best at which time of year, depths vary. Follow the match pages on Facebook for results but as a general guide I'll say the wider areas fish better in the summer months as they tend to be slightly shallower. 🤣 LOL Ant - it's worse than that, imagine all the stuff I cut out, but that's just how blokes are when they're together and we swear more when we ain't caught much🤣 There's pockets of fish and they're on the move all the time. I was back out there Saturday, and they'd moved again, it was clear they were migrating up the canal from the weights but you'll have to wait until next week for that one.

They're £20. We also put £25 in for the league prize fund on the first match, I never really expected to be in with a shout of that, you have to draw consistently well and fish them all so you can drop your worst results but unfortunately I have to miss 2 maybe 3 of them so just treat each one as an open.

I try not to overpower the vocals with the music, not always easy when the song builds but I felt such a long hard fight needed a bit of something to create the tension I was feeling, first fish of the match and you never really settle until you have one in the net, just a shame I couldn't find any more😢
