Jason, what a really nice build,, went back and watched on the big screen, beautiful work on the interior, you must have really been into this build - the extra care and attention to detail really shines, thanks for posting

Just bought the camo release version and am looking forward to building it. Found your video very very helpful and saved me a few bob on the aftermarket stuff. Due to lack of space I seem to gravitate towards folding wing version of 1:48 FAA aircraft (also spent 22 years as an aircraft fitter in the FAA so have worked on many of them seaking, buccaneer, Wessex V. Now looking for 1.48 wasp, and scimitar 🇬🇧😊

Great job! I was commissioned to build a Walrus for a friend whose Dad flew them during and after the war. Looking on ebay, I found a few of these Airfix kits but also some by Classic Airframes, which were about half the price. I bought one of these, and the Eduard cockpit set, but to my horror, the kit was made in Czechoslovakia, with all the typical annoyances that these kits have: vague instructions, poor moulding, a distinct lack of locating holes and no part numbers on the sprues. I made a start on it, but I was concerned that the 8 struts holding the engine & upper wing were all separate parts and I couldn't think of a way of positioning them all correctly, which is fairly important. After I tried joining the fuselage halves together I was left with huge gaps. At this point I gave up and bought this Airfix 'Silver Wings' kit. What a difference! Everything fitted, the instructions were easily followed and there were actual locating holes for things such as the tail struts. Even better, the engine struts were moulded as part of the engine, so the engine was automatically positioned correctly. With biplanes I normally leave the top wing loose until the rigging's done, but this wasn't possible with the Walrus as the rigging wires go to the wings, not the struts. But by fitting turnbuckles to all the rigging points first, I found the rigging was relatively simple. I also bought aftermarket decals for Fleet Air Arm aircraft, as my mate's Dad was an FAA pilot. It built into a very impressive model, I thoroughly enjoyed building it and my client was overjoyed by the final result.

@@ModelkitStuff I agree, and the Walrus is such an interesting design too. I've got the Airfix Gannet on backorder, I'm itching to get my hands on that!

Lovely!!! Really nice build that captures the Walrus's ugly duckling look. Something you could add that would lift the guns more is painting the vertical edge of each ammunition drum an off white. Check out pictures - (I've used the guns for real) - Vickers K ammunition drums were factory issued with white edges. They got grubby very quickly, but were still noticeably white.

A very useful video, I have this kit in my collection awaiting it's turn, though it won't be for a while. I was a bit wary of so much silver and think that I would have preferred the camouflaged version but it wasn't available when I bought the silver one.

Excellent work there sir, it is one of these aircraft you never see come out in kit form, well not in 1/48th scale, a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia.

An interesting insight. As the Walrus is a staple Seaplane stand in. For 28mm wargaming. As a rule we normally pick up the Smer 1/48 over the Airfix 1/48. Normally because you can get three Smer for the price of one Airfix. Yes they're clunky and extremely dated. But their chunk and durability is part of their charm since they're picked up and bashed around on a regular basis. The Airfix kit is the version that's contemplated as a better option.However seeing your video is pretty apparent that it's just not worth the extra money in order to have that little more clarity in exterior detail especially give it'll spend most of its time being viewed from 3ft away. ( Plus mines water lined and painted in a WW1 seaplane colour scheme so historical accuracy isn't my first priority.)

Yep, models which 'work for their living' are a different ballgame from the true to scale builds. Is nice to have both options available.

Hi, I understand about the bi plane wings your talking about being difficult, I'm away to start Tamyias swordfish now I've got the PE set for all that what should have really been supplied with the kit but the strut frames are done am odd way on this kit they have like a massive slot down the wings instead of just 2 or 4 holes to slide them into so I'm guessing I'm gong to have a bit of filling on this! But the swordfish is also a beautiful aircraft! I really like them spoked wheel's you have used! As for decals what I have started doing is matching the carrier film to my varnishes if there matt or a glossy carrier film for eg! I've just built andys HQ 1.16 sherman they decals were like rice paper and ultra matt they silvered like heck in a semi gloss varnish so it proved my point to myself copy the gloss coats to the carrier film's they'll work perfectly like your W!
@ModelkitStuff
@ModelkitStuff Жыл бұрын
the Tamiya Swordfish builds up well, I fancy making another at some point, yep you will be filling the wings, if memory serves the etch struts go on first and there is space for them so quite a gap.
