You just have to marvel at the range, innovation and ambition of Airfix back then.

This was an essential item when I was at junior school. I was eight in 1971, and had just started making model kits - the first I ever built myself, was an Airfix series 2 Supermarine Walrus - I was fascinated by it's odd shape. Not painted, of course, but I loved it all the same. The catalogue is wonderful - A lovely nostalgic wallow, with Roy Cross' iconic artworks for company. Gorgeous. My brother got me a Ford Trimotor from a yard sale, a few years back - it was still sellotaped up, and, on opening it, I was utterly thrilled to find a bag containing an unopened tube of Airfix cement. I was more excited finding this, than un bagging the Trimotor, if I'm honest. If it was from about 1972-3, then it would be the stuff that smelled pleasantly of oranges. Never got that. You don't want kids sniffing solvents, yet your cement smells of oranges? Nope. 🤔🤔🤔😂😂😂 Oh, and the '2001' Orion shuttle? Yes, please, Airfix. Vintage Classics range? Lovely. 👍👍👍

I still have my copy, 53 years after I bought it. The newsagent 100 yards from our house had dozens of Airfix kits to choose from but I was normally restricted to Series 1 as the idea of saving up my pocket money was completely alien! 2s 9d when I started modelling and of course they were in polybags with superb Roy Cross artwork.

my first airfix kit in 1962 was a spitfire in a plastic bag at 2/-.great memories of airfix.loved the classic ships like the royal sovereign,since its ownership by hornby its not the same, most of the range is gone unless you like planes.even revell is on thin ice,
@MOS6510Models3 жыл бұрын
Hmm maybe. But i think airfix has developed some nice kits recently.. the lightning is a good build as an example. For ships, trumpeter and tamiya have a nice range

Good grief, that bought back some happy memories! Great video. I had to go check the garage. I still have a copy of that exact same catalogue, bought when I was 10! (Yours is in better condition..!). BTW., take another look at the Saturn 1B and the Saturn V. (Page 22). Different kits, different launch vehicles. The Saturn V went to the moon & was a terrific kit to build & play with. (Dunno what happened to mine..!).

@christopherbentley72892 жыл бұрын
I don't believe it! The one Airfix kit I have made up thrice in my sixty years on Planet Earth was the sort of 'star attraction' in this edition, being the example of the designs used by the company inside the covers - the Henschel Hs 123. I was always fascinated by the fact that it was the last of the front-line combat biplanes and by how credible it still would have looked in the latter stages of WWII. Also, just about a decade back at my previous address, I found a somewhat beaten-up old Savoia-Marchetti S.M. 79 (minus the nose engine) in the attic that had evidently been there for some decades. That was another aircraft of WWII I found strangely fascinating, having an odd number of engines...which wasn't one! Thanks for the uploading, MOS6510 and for that reminder of Airfix's evident pride in the Hs 123!

One of the things that annoy me about Airfix is that then they had a fantastic range of World War One and interwar aircraft in 1:72 scale and yet now the only one of these lovely aeroplanes they have in 1:48 scale is the Tiger Moth! Very annoying! There are one or two other things, for instance why have they never done a version of the prototype K5054 Spitfire? And why oh why must they have the box art extending beyond the red border of the box lid????
